Top 5 games that are basically ripped off movies

Top 5 games that are basically movies without an official License

Most movie tie in games are not very good. A cheap buck on the side for low quility websites like gametrailers to advertise and win a spike dude bro award at the currupt awards presented by the extreamly odious Geoff Knightley. However, most video games do take "inspiration" from movies. By that I mean they totally rip them off. Here (imo) are the top 5 video games that are "inspired" by movies. With 1 being the best.

1. Shogun II

The extreamly talented and wonderful developers at creative assembly have outright admitted Total War wouldn't exist without Akira Kurosawa. If you have ever watched any of his Samurai movies such as the wonderful "Kagemusha" or the epic "Ran" it should be pretty clear that Shogun 2 primarily takes cinematic inspiration from these movies. Much like Akira Kurosawa movies, this is a sophisticated peice of art well above the derivative pap of other supposed AAA games on 2011.

2. Stalker

Stalker is a movie, based on a book that was loosely (the word being very loosely) made into a game. Even though stalker is a buggy riddled mess. With terrible localization, horrendous animations and other problems, it has an atmosphere and sense of place no other game can touch. When you die in stalker you get a feeling that the gameworld is apathetic to your existence with the wheel still turning regardless of you playing it or not. While many first person shooters have been dumbed down for consoles with checkpoints every 5 feet, regenerating health, stupid AI that lacks any challange and over scripting, stalker is relentless. It's a harcore pc gamers dream and a true "survival" game far more than any supposed resident evil or Fallout title. While it's sad to see stalker 2 die, i'd much rather that than a bastardized console version. The loose plot similar to the movie revolves around making your way deep into the zone to confront a wish granter. In the game, this leaves several endings depending on how you play.

3. Halflife 2

This one should be rather obvious "1984" and "war of the worlds". Halflife 2 is considered by many the greatest FPS ever and far superior to Call Of Duty and other pretenders. Personally I still prefer the first game, it's my fav FPS. However Halflife 2 is also very good.

4. Warcraft III

The interest thing about this game is, it's basically the story of Darth Vader before the "Revenge Of The Sith" . The actual scene when the fellow becomes the "Lich King" is surprisingly similar that of Anakin becoming Darth Vader in revenge of sith.

Likewise when the character dies, he also has a moment similar to Darth Vader in Return Of The Jedi.

5. Amazingly amazing in nature, like above, Homeworld was made before Battlestar Galatica (2003). Aside from the story, the outlandish soundtrack is also extreamly reminiscent of that used in the tv/movie by "Bear McCreary". The story involves a race using a hyper-drive and returning to find the planet "Kharak" completely destroyed. They must now find there "Homeworld" which was prophesied through relics. While getting there they are hunted down by the race who destroyed there planet. Basically, it's Battlestar Galatica.

Homeworld is still the best story-telling and most cinimatic strategy game made. Hell, it's one of the best, full stop. While many games sacrifice gameplay to get that narrative in, Homeworld doesn't. It enhances it by giving it much needed emotionally engaging context most strategy games lack. While kids on the console jumped claiming metal gear solid was cinematic this was better. The gameplay was better. The soundtrack was better. Everything was better. Homeworld was an incredible game that sorely needs a sequel. While I enjoy the Company Of Heroes and Dawn Of War series... they aint no homeworld.

I have a prime example for you: Snatcher. I love the game, but it is absolutely a rip-off of Blade Runner.

First of all, both deal with robots that look like humans, and a cop that has to take them down. Snatcher does something slightly different with the concept, and that it was written by Kojima is obvious based on how convoluted the whole thing is.

Just to emphasize how much the game takes from the movie, check out this comparison between two major characters, which I found on the internet:

As much as I like Snatcher, Blade Runner does a much better job with the concept.

@BoG: That's kind of Kojima's thing though. Takes lots of elements from popular culture and put's his own brand of insanity onto it.

Absolutely. I don't have a problem with it, I love most of Kojima's games, in all their drug-induced glory. I don't think that anyone can argue that Blade Runner uses the same ideas in a much better way, though. Kojima was trying to do something completely different with it, which must be acknowledged.

Considering your last two were made before the movies, i don't quite think they fit, at least not unless you want to change the title of your thread.

Also, shouldn't Uncharted be in here? It's basically Indiana Jones.

The Yakuza games are pretty heavily based on Asian crima drama movies too. Arguments could also be made for many Bioware games also.

This thread really needs more bold. Also, the Fallouts are really heavily inspired by Mad Max.

Why are you on this site again? Jeff is part of these 'currupt' awards and Geoff 'Knightley' is working on them, but he isn't hosting or presenting it. And why is gametrailers a low 'quility' website? Their E3 coverage last year was awesome. Geoff brought out more information out of Reggie than in the goddamn Nintendo press conference and he had the guts to say that the launch titels for the 3DS weren't good.

This comment was mostly based on the qeastionible credibility and ethics of the spike awards (by that I mean totally fucking currupt cancer of the gaming industry). Particularly awards such as "Peter Jacksons: King Kong". I don't know which person is Jeff as I generally only watch the quick looks which do not show the faces of the people talking. However, if like you say he does take part in the Spike Awards then thats simply a reason not to respect him. I don't really have any interest in gaint bombs reviews so it's abit moot. I do recall last years Spike awards with them running around shouting about "we have top industry judging". If thats the case, then they aren't doing a very good job and it's a really bad sign for the industry imo.

I am surprised you didn't mention any Metal Gear games. I guess they gravitate more toward homage than the reflection of an individual movie though.

Battlestar Galatica was rebooted with a collaboration between sky tv and the sci-fi channel as a mini series that was eventually turned into a full lengh show (with straight to DVD movies tie in's).

The prior show was extreamly campy in comparison and more along the lines of starwars.

Well, I don't know Dune. As I said, just kind of googled and picked the first image. I guess that is Sting....

Here's the actual Blade Runner character.

Homeworld is a lot like BSG because they at first tried to buy the rights to BSG and make a game about that. When they couldn't afford the rights they took the same ideas and made HW1. They also thanked George Lucas in the end credits because Star Wars was their inspiration for the games story of a group of rebels fighting against an evil empire apparently.

@BoG: Like someone else mentioned, there's a slight mishap there mate. Dune is another great comparison with Snatcher though.

Can't agree with Roy Batty from Blade Runner, don't think that's it at all. Randam Hajile is totally Feyd-Rautha from Dune, shown there in your picture with the blue outfit and also shown in-game in the grey one. Identical.

I think however, this is the image you should be looking at:

Call of Duty is basically a rip off of a bunch of WW2 movies, which themselves were ripped off from WW2.  WW2 was just a lazy sequel to WW1.

Red Dead Redemption was an obvious homage to spaghetti westerns, with some Wild Bunch mixed into there, when you're in the late game town where you can see cars and modern tech creeping in on the old west. Plus that bank heist level was a great nod to the opening scene of The Wild Bunch, minus an abstinence parade.

I'm having more trouble narrowing this to five then anything... I mean, ripoffs/inspired stuff is just so rampant across movies and games...

You know, 1984 is not the only authoritarian dystopia out there, it's an established genre. You can't say all of them plagiarize Orwell's work because he was the first one to come up with an accessible masterpiece. Same with the huge fantasy genre and Tolkien, it's a silly argument.

@whyareyoucrouchingspock: Admittedly, I never read War of the Worlds (that Tom Cruise movie doesn't count) and I started playing HL 2 last night for the first time. I read 1984 many times though and 2 hours in HL I thought the similarities were a bit faint. I'll come back to you when I'm done with these Combine jerks.

The game rocks btw, I finished the original two months ago to understand the story but I got burned out trying to play the two unnecessary expansions -- what a bad idea.

I quite enjoyed Opposing Force. Blueshift? Eh.

I'd go as far to say Opossing Force was the best game gearbox put out after BIA.

Max Payne 3 and Tony "acid" Scott's Man on Fire.

From the visual effects, setting, subtitling, plot, and down to both having drinking problems.

The only thing they changed was the daughter he's meant to protect is is much older in the game.

Many of these aren't really rip-offs though...

1) Shoguns were an actual thing in Japanese history.

2) STALKER is just full of post-apocalyptic genre conventions.

3) Half-Life 2's dystopian future is a genre. A genre heavily inspired by 1984, perhaps, but a genre with its own conventions nonetheless; HL2 is hardly the only one.

4) Star Wars Episode 3 came out years after Warcraft 3. Episode 2 came out at about the time they would have been finalizing Warcraft 3. Episode 1 doesn't have much development towards Anakin as Darth Vader; this one must be false because the timing is pretty far off.

5) The idea of a group trying to find their home wasn't invented by Battlestar Galactica, though it did do it in space. It should be mentioned that the older version of Battlestar Galactica had the same basic story, so Homeworld didn't predate it.

Personally, don't really like that stuff 24 quick cut stuff at all. Prefer the old Max payne comic book style.
