The Making Of My GOTG List vol. 1 (The one where I write down too many names and still probably miss some obvious ones)

Hi. This is the introduction section where I introduce the..humm..thing.

Anyway, hi. Hello.

My goal with this series of blog posts is to write down my thought process until I end up with a list, an ordered list if you will, let's say... with 25 entries? of video games that were, in my opinion, the best and only the very best that the last generation of video games brought us (in this case, me).

The rules are pretty simple. Rule numero uno: the video game had to come out between Nov 05 and Nov 13 for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC. Rule numero dos: (is that how you write "two" in spanish? i dont remember). Rule numero tres: wait, I guess there wasn't any rule no.2, so there isn't a rule no.3 either. That means there's only one rule, huh. Silly me, over complicating it all.

But forget my ramblings and let's focus on what matters: video games. I've been thinking about them, more precisely, about the ones that came out in the last 8 years. I've been thinking about how they compare to each other and what are my thoughts on them. Some of the conclusions that I have so far, after all that thinking, are: a) video games came out in the last 8 years b) a lot of them, not just a few c) a decent number of them were good or had potential to be good.

So, after these conclusions I decided to write down the names of said games and this is what I came up with:

The Games

Did I say I've been meaning to write this blog for the last week and a half but somehow I've never been able to do it? I think I start to see why.

Fuck, that's a lot of video games.

Coming Up Next

OK guys, I'm sorry, but I'm exhausted already. I'm done for this one. Next blog entry I'll do some cutting down (a lot of cutting down, I hope) and try to reach a reasonable number of games that I can work with. I'll do my best and explain myself and my thought process while doing so, but c'mon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to cut down R.U.S.E. without saying a word about it. And others will be on the same ship.

I don't know yet how many blog posts I'll go through until I reach my goal (I'm assuming 4 or 5, right now). The optimal way would be to release one every day, but this blog is already far from optimal, so I'll try to not go more than 2/3 days without another entry. I hope you guys are interested on what's going on here (although I guess there's not much, unless you're into reading a huge block of video game names) and what's coming up ahead.

That's quite the wall of text!

well, technically that's not text. it's just names. the part that is actual text is neatly organized in 3 line paragraphs :)

Hey, I'm working on an in-depth Games of the Generation list too! I've been working on it for about a year, have a few hundred games written down so far, am trying to tackle a lengthy list of more titles, and chop it all down to 100 games. Great to see that others are taking their time with their lists too, trying to really dissect the games they play and figure out the most complete and accurate list they can make. Excited to see what you come up with!

I have a few questions about how you're going about your list. Maybe these will be tackled in more of your "Making of" series, so hopefully you'll tackle them.

First off, what kind of list will this be? Will this be a list of your "favourite" games that you played, slashing the games down that are well made but never really "clicked" with you and praising the games that, despite having some major flaws, really struck a cord with you? Is this list going to be a "best of", where you try to look at games critically and in a vacuum from their reception, popularity, and (as much as possible (as in barely possible)) from your own feelings on the game? Or are you going to kind of mix in a whole bunch of values: personal preference, general quality, importance for gaming as a whole, popularity within the medium, etc etc.

The rules are pretty simple. Rule numero uno: the video game had to come out between Nov 05 and Nov 13 for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC. there a reason why you left out Playstation Portable, Nintendo DS, Browser, and iOS/Android? You are already missing out on a ton of fantastic games this generation by limiting your list to the three consoles and typical PC releases.

Thirdly, what types of games do you prefer? What do you enjoy most in games, value the most, and look at most critically? I'm sure the list should speak to this, as your list may be filled with instances of fined tuned gameplay, graphical powerhouses, story driven experiences, short and sweet packages, or long and immersive journeys. It could have a strong showing of Strategy, Fighting, or Shooters. The best thing about these lists are that they reveal what exactly the list maker values in video games and I'd love to hear what your preferences are.

Great list so far. You hit almost all the notable games from this generation with your list (beyond games from the platforms listed above). Can't tell if they are list of games you want to tackle or a list of games you have played. If you're going off your own experience, that's a pretty impressive list and I can't really judge you for what you have and have not played. If this is a list of all the games you want to tackle, might I suggest adding Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Little King's Story, ilomilo, and King of Fighters XIII. All of them are excellent games that tend to get slept on when these lists are formed.

Anyway, that's enough out of me. Enjoy the list making process and good luck!

@devoureroftime: oh god i wrote so much stuff and then for some weird reason when I posted it it all went to shit.

Sorry, but now it will have to be the quick version.

1) this will be a list of games that are meaningful to me (there won't be games that don't have that meaning, not matter how good I know Red Dead Redemption is) and despite it being my favorites games, it won't be the solo factor of decision, as my critical analysis will also play a role (Alpha Protocol, I love you, but you won't make it)

2) I don't like the rule either, but I felt it was a necessity to avoid thinking about too much about what is or what isn't "last generation". The term generation are really only used for home consoles, anyways. Don't worry, the games that don't fall on rule no.1 will have a reward later on :)

3) I prefer the good games. Lame answer, I know. But, as long as what the game is doing appeals to me, whatever that may be (good story/gameplay/visuals/etc.), I'll be interested by it and will play it/keep playing it.

Regarding the list, it's a list of games that I deemed worthy of being part of the discussion, even if it's only to get a mention. It's most definitely not a list of games I've played, I'm not a crazy person.

Thanks for the suggestions, I may add King of Fighters XIII, even if it's just to say how it isn't KoF '98 and how KoF '98 is one of the greatest fighting games of all time :)

I hope I get to see your list too.

Rule number one; How do I know you're not a cop?

Looking forward to seeing that wall be torn down into a coherent list!

This is really a head spinner of a list.

I saw 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand in there so that's all you really need, right?

Pretty much, but I want to show how I eventually got to that conclusion.
