Best of 2015

My top ten games of 2015 - subject to change (I didn't play that many new games in 2015...)

Games I haven't played yet: Ori and the Blind Forest, Her Story, Life is Strange, Axiom Verge

List items

  • One of the finest RPGs I've ever played. Fantastic world building, dialogue, characters, and story. Also, HOLY SHIT GWENT.

  • A welcome change to the Dark Souls formula with a new Victorian setting, faster combat, and no shields. The addition of the Cthulhu mythos REALLY sold me on this game.

  • MGSV has taken the classic MGS formula, and refined the gameplay to the point of perfection, while also retaining the idiosyncratic story elements of the previous games. On a moment-to-moment gameplay level, this is hands down the best game in the MGS series.

  • The FFXIV team at SE have really outdone themselves with this expansion. They added a TON of new story content, along with 3 new jobs, and a bunch of new zones and dungeons. FFXIV has quickly become my favorite MMO of all time.

  • A fun and addicting RPG that improves on Fallout 3 in many ways. The addition of base building, some welcome changes to perks, and a MASSIVE improvement in combat mechanics make this a great Bethesda game. The dialogue system may have taken a step down, but the fully voiced characters are welcome.

  • This game has a tremendous amount of heart, and I loved the characters so much. The opening songs for each chapter were perfect! A true gem of an adventure game. One of the best games Telltale has ever made.

  • A fun AC game set in Victorian London. The addition of the grappling hook makes traversal so much easier. Plus, your hideout is on a train that moves around London!

  • With Shadowrun: Hong Kong, HBS has made many improvements to their formula. They've added new art assets and gameplay mechanics, while retaining the great dialogue and world building of the previous two games.

  • An excellent return for the Arkham series after the mediocre Origins. The Batmobile tank battles did get a little repetitive, but open world Gotham was so fun to explore, that I tended to overlook it.

  • Great soundtrack, tough gameplay, weird storyline. Awesome sequel.
