You know what Final Fantasy in 2012 doesn't look like? Versus 13. That game is never coming out, is it?

It is indeed coming out. Probably not this year, but next year is quite likely. It is simply that Square-Enix showed the game too early. They were marketing the Fabula Nova Crystallis series quite heavily, and this is one of the core parts of that. Nevertheless, they have been in full production since early fall, so it is coming out. The technology is all there at this point, so all it takes is creating content. So 1-2 years is the range we're looking at. In Playstation world, this is obviously not a big deal, since FFXII came out in 06, the year that the PS3 launched.

I'm not sure that I agree with the premise, but I will tell you that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the type of JRPG that can make a big impact over here. Final Fantasy does pretty well outside of Japan, though. Versus will just be bigger than FFXIII or FXIII-2. The reasons are very clear and, despite the quality of those games, this one will resonate even better with the western market.

I dont know about Versus XIII... Like the main reason why I really want that game to come out is because some of the gameplay footage made me reminiscent over the many times I have gone and visited family in Tokyo. Im a bit iffy about that combat system and even though the teasers were absolutely stunning, I just havent seen any gameplay footage that made me go "wow, this game looks incredibly fun to play"

The combat will surely be the main point of contention, since it is more in the vein of Kingdom Hearts, and perhaps Devil May Cry, than most JRPGs. I could be wrong, but that appears to be something that a lot of people (though not necessarily you) don't care for. The gameplay footage that has been shown is all from well before full production began on the game, so perhaps we will get to see more of it, and in a more complete state, later this year.

Let's hope that the game impresses both of us, and is less polarizing overall than FFXIII was. By the way, I think that's pretty cool that the game brings those good memories to mind for you.

I loved Final Fantasy XIII, and XIII-2 will be even better. It did have problems, and those are all addressed in Final Fantasy Versus XIII. That game is truly amazing in every way. The setting, the lead character, the amazing graphics and CG. The design of the gameplay is better than anything I've seen in the bulk of Japanese RPGs. The combat system is real time, you can even use a gun in real time free aim, and it's an open world game.

I think Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be a monumental game that will be on GOTY short lists. And it's been in full production for some months now, though it's hard to say when we will see it. It could quite easily be 2013, though I could be extremely optimistic and say 2012. So much of the game is actually done that, really, now it's just filling in the content. The graphics are fundamentally there, the engines (plural) are there, the CG has been in production for a long time, and yeah, I could see it coming within the next 18 months.

Yeah, but it's one of those things that will destroy you if you don't just let it go, hahaha. I spent $10 on Gothic 3 before the holiday sales, and then it was $2.49, for example. I twitched a little and then moved on. But man, it is torture.

If I could have, I would have spent $300 on Steam this Christmas. But I only ended up with 3 games, two of which were Skyrim and The Witcher 2. I figure that's pretty great.

So I finished The Witcher 2 a while ago, but was only able to play the game fluently on medium settings back then. About 4-5 hours ago I started another playthrough with everything maxed out except "Ubersampling" and it looks insanely beautiful. I know it only supports DX9, but the way most locations and models look I'm totally blown away by the visuals.. Am I completely wrong or is there no game out there (right now) that looks as good as The Witcher 2?

Keeping in mind that this is mostly pretty subjective, I think that, when I consider both technical and artistic prowess, The Witcher 2 is the best looking game ever made. It is truly a PC game, although they did hold back somewhat because of the consoles. That being said, there are settings in that game, specifically ubersampling, that do ungodly things to your PC. The lighting model, the polygon count, the textures, the particle effects, it's all extremely well done in comparison to the competition. CD Projekt have always referred to the quality of the graphics in the context of RPG games. For an RPG, they think it is the best. I would agree with them. That shouldn't be controversial, though I am sure there are some out there that prefer some other modern RPG's graphics.

I am currently playing Skyrim, and, although it is a very nice looking game with many downright gorgeous moments, it is very much a console game built using technology from 2005. The Creation Engine, as noted on the Bombcast, is fundamentally Gamebryo. Bethesda has iterated from Oblivion to Fallout 3 to Skyrim, each successively besting that which came before it, but not by orders of magnitude. The Witcher 2 compared to The Witcher, is an entire generation of difference.

I think it is probably the best looking game ever made, but that judgement is based on more than the technical. It is the fusion of great tech and beautiful art that makes The Witcher 2 the greatest looking game available. Guild Wars 2 will soon usurp it!

Note: On pure technical terms, Battlefield 3 is really amazing.

Viva Pinata took a while to get its legs, too. Ultimately it sold a million copies. It probably had a lot to do with the TV show, which eventually established itself. Banjo might be a case where word of mouth will bring it up in sales. At the same time, I don't know; it was an overly crowded fall lineup. I don't know what to say besides that this game is a total classic and I've been getting the word out and posting my review in various places.

Ugh, it's so depressing.
