NBA 2K11 Impressions & Review

I'll let the following event convey my feelings on NBA 2K11:

My girlfriend: "Hey, are you coming to bed soon?  You have to get up early for work tomorrow."

Me: "Sweetheart, listen, Jordan's about to drop 6 threes in the first half against the Blazers...I don't know what this means, Jordan doesn't know what this means, do you know what this means?"

*My girlfriend shrugs*

Me: YES!  That's exactly what this means!

My girlfriend: "What?  What are you talking about?"

Me: "Wait...was that shrug the answer to my question, or simply an expression of confusion?"

My girlfriend: "It was a shrug, because I have no clue what the hell you're talking about."

Me: "Yeah...I'll be in bed after His Airness drops 55 in the Garden."

"...at guard, standing 6'6"...MICHAEL...JORDAN!"

Best.  Sports.  Game.  Ever.  Period.  Period.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Impressions & Review

I'm not exactly sure why I purchased the new Spider-Man game.  There hasn't been a good Spider-Man game since the days of the original PlayStation, and furthermore they only seem to be getting worse with each release.  That being said, I'm a huge Spider-Man fan, loved the concept of incorporating multiple Spider-Man universes into a single game, and am a HUGE sucker for collectibles.  GameStop may have also had a hand to play in my purchase of the game, because Cosmic Spider-Man is one of my all time favorite looks for the web slinger, so not only did I buy the game but I had to pre-order it just to make sure I got my hands on the Cosmic Spider-Man bonus suit.  Now after playing the game for a couple days, I'm having way more fun with this game than I should be having.

At its core, it's a simple button masher.  Defeat hordes upon hordes of the same (albeit skinned differently depending on the universe/level) enemies mashing the X button.  You do seem to get better combo scores at the end of the level however if you vary your combos.  Some of the boss battles are the same way, mash X until said boss dies (I'm looking at you Deadpool).  Others are ridiculously fun and unique, like Electro and Sandman.  Three of the universes play out like that, while the Noir universe is something else entirely.  The Noir universe is stealth based, Metal Gear Solid style where if you're spotted a little alarm goes off and all the bad dudes try to gun you down until you can run away and hide again.  Noir Spidey has a stealth based kill attack, the takedown, which is great...when it works.  Sometimes the game prompts you for a takedown, other times from a seemingly similar distance and setup it does not...which leads to you being detected and shot at repeatedly.  I have also encountered an annoying bug no less than three times over the past two days, where Spider-Man  runs in place non-stop with no way to continue the level other than restarting from a previous checkpoint at the pause menu.

All complaints aside, the game really excels in the collectibles department.  Any true Spider-Man fan will love all the different, and in some cases awesomely obscure, alternate suits in each universe.  In order to get these suits, and many other combat and character upgrades, one must complete challenges in each of the levels.  These challenges can range from simply killing X number of badguys, to defeating a certainly enemy or portion of the level in X amount of time, to doing weird things such as melting wall fans with acid filled eggs.  These challenges are kept track on the Web Of Destiny (cue the angelic "AHHHHHH"), and for anybody who loves collectibles, challenges, and achievement like me they're enough to suck you in and make sure you get your gameplay's worth out of each level.  Some of the suits even requite you to complete EVERY challenge before you can unlock them, so for people like me who want that Scarlet Spider suit you have your work cut out for you...or I guess you could have pre-ordered the game at K-Mart to unlock the suit right off the bat...that is, if you even know where one of those is (I thought that franchise went out of business years ago, I stand corrected).

In short, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is a good game, with a few bugs and repetitive gameplay sections, but unfortunately nothing amazing.  I do feel that any true Spider-Man fan will enjoy the game significantly more than a casual gamer, and look past the flaws.  For those not really all that into Spider-Man, but interested to check it out, I would recommend a rental before a purchase.  Also, I feel I must touch upon the voice acting as being great, especially for a super hero game.  Neil Patrick Harris as the Amazing Spider-Man is hilarious.
