My (probably) top (so many) games of the year 2013 (so far)... (:)

Man, these current-gen consoles bloody suck, don't they? As I've (repeatedly) whined about my plight surrounding my lack of a gaming PC, I'm pretty much stuck with these archaic hunk of shit. I'm not planning on getting a next-gen console this year either, so... I may have already played pretty much every game I'd want to play this year, besides a few outliers I definitely still need to get around to. As such, despite the year not even close to reaching its final moments, I've decided to round up a quick draft of what games I'm most likely going to place up on my GOTY blog amidst the masses when the time comes...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meta time: list within a list!.. So, yeah, here's the games that I've got left to get through:

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

It is my duty to seek out the truth about whether there truly is 10 games better than this.

Killer is Dead

So glad I didn't get this full price -- or am I?! Guess I'll find out soon enough... Despite finding Grasshopper's earlier two outings to be kinda mixed, his games are always the sort that I want to try out for myself to see where I stand.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Here Comes A New Challenger! At the unspoken, inadvertent behest of @gunstarred. I had always considering getting this, but from the things I've heard, it's supposed to be yet another entry in the long running tradition of sub-par console versions, complete with bipolar framerates and sub-HD graphics. But... I'm getting it anyway as it turns out.

Yakuza 5

SEGA TROLLS UUUUUUUUUUU.... But no, fuck you, Sega. You and your shitty Hatsunshine McDonalds bullshit.

Lone Survivor

I actually bought this already on the PC, but I really dislike using keyboard controls for anything other than RTS'. It's primarily for movement... Don't know why, I just get real antsy whenever I moved about in that game, unintentionally so and not because the game itself was getting under my skin. Though from what i played, it certainly looked like it had the potential! Excited to play it on PSN.

Beyond: Two Souls

Maaaybeeee? If it continues 2013's streak of featuring superb PS3 exclusives, then sure!

Batman: Arkham Origins

Huh, there's actually a lot more on my potential shopping list than I first suspected... Though this one could definitely go either way; it all depends on what our lords and saviours at Digital Foundry can tell me.

God of War: Ascension

Oh, right, this thing came out didn't it. Eh, if I spot it for cheap enough. Not exactly expecting great things, though.

Diablo 3

Jesus, again, as it turns out there is apparently a lot more on my plate than I thought when first writing up this list... blurb.

As someone who doesn't really play many games of its kind i still had a craving for one of those and leading up to its release it was either DmC or Metal Gear Rising. I don't regret my choice!

Otherwise this is a fine list.

I have a similar one going and i feel it will be a battle to the end between The Last of Us and GTA V for me. For the longest time i always thought that The Last of Us succeeded in spite of being a game and not because it is one. But having recently watched all the cinematics from the gallery menu made me realise just how much story and character development happens outside of cinematics and made me reconsider my position.

DmC was a disappointment...too much platforming in that game, broke the pacing of the game, aka the action, tremendously.

@yummylee: I played all those games but I don't think I'll ever notice the difference in games. Oh well. But I'll try Sly 3 and then a different game

@awesomeusername: Yeah, I don't quite understand how the whole frame-lock thing works on youtube, either. Specifically when people are uploading videos supposedly running at 60fps...

But as for 60fps console games, Metal Gear Rising is a good example, and of course a relatively recent one. You could compare playing that against, say, the console version of DmC, and you would theoretically notice at least some difference :P A lot of HD collections also run at 60fps, including the Sly Cooper collection, which you could then compared to the newest Sly Cooper, which I would imagine is probably aiming for 30.

@yummylee: Okay, so I just went on YouTube and looked up comparisons. The first video was of Sleepy Dawgz and it didn't help much since it just showed both games running side by side in full speed, 50% speed and 20%. I saw there were obviously more frames on the left side when slowed down but it wasn't helpful. Then I saw APB and I saw a bit of a difference. But then I saw this one of Counter Strike and HOLY SHIT. That's noticeable. I mean, unless I was somehow able to play a game on PC for a couple hours and then played the same game on consoles, I don't think I'll ever see a difference. But 60 looks smooth as hell so I hope that becomes the standard next gen.

Or not?! I looked at the description to the CS video and it says the video is running at 30 and then I remembered videos are locked at 30 on YouTube so does that mean the 60 FPS was actually 30 and the 30 FPS was like 15 or something? I'm confused. Games obviously don't look like what it looked like in the video (The 30 FPS part) because then I wouldn't play video games. I guess I'll never really know the difference until I see it myself.

@yummylee: Well if it's the DLC you were playing, then I can understand why it was unplayable. I mean, I haven't played B2 aside from the first 3 hours or so but Gearbox makes shitty DLC expansions so I wouldn't doubt that it plays like crap.

I don't think I've ever seen a game play at 60 FPS so I honestly wouldn't know. The only time I've played on a PC would be some indies on my laptop. Besides COD, I don't even know what PS3 games run at 60 FPS. The only game I played that I KNOW went past 30 FPS was Bioshock Infinite when I unlocked the framerate (it's in the options). It looked smoother to me when looking around and stuff but it had screen tearing which was painful to look at. So I don't know. I need to see if I can find a comparison video of 60 vs. 30 FPS on YouTube. If I don't find anything, I guess I'll see the difference next gen with Killzone since the campaign runs at 30 and the multiplayer runs at 60. And I honestly don't see the difference between COD MP and other games.

So does 60 just feel smoother when you're playing games? I don't know man. Video games are weird.

@awesomeusername: That's the weird thing, because I haven't played games on a PC since... about 2003 >_> EDIT; Actually make that 2006, because that was the year I wasted away in WoW. And yet I've still gotten to be really frame-sensitive as of late.

I put BL2 on my GOTY list because at the time it didn't stand out as much to me I guess. Plus, it was the DLC (the Mr Torque one specifically) that made me decide to head back into BL2, and it wasn't running so fresh... Sub-30 at all times basically and I didn't find it to be very pleasant.

Also, can you really not see the difference between 30 and 60fps? That would at least explain why you're not as fazed by a lack of frames as most, but still... kinda crazy.

@yummylee: Unless a game drops a lot of frames, I don't really notice anything. I don't even know how 60 FPS looks compared to 30! But yeah, I never had the framerate drop on me in FC3. Can't find B2 playable... Okay, have you been playing games on PC? But wait. Why is B2 on your GOTY 2012 list!?

@awesomeusername: I found the framerate to be too much in Far Cry 3 on PS3. Or I guess rather I found that there wasn't enough... I'm not usually such a stickler for framerates, as I was able to play SRIV on PS3 with relatively little fuss. But for whatever reason I could barely even look at Far Cry 3; I gave it about 2 hours in and couldn't play any more. It being a first-person game may be the reason why I thought it was especially unbearable.

It's probably the reason why I also can no longer find Borderlands 2 on the PS3 playable anymore...

@yummylee: I forgot about the Rapture DLC, man I can't wait for that. I still really love Infinite. I need to continue my playthrough on hard... You forgot Sly existed?! You're pure evil! Sly 4 is a gorgeous game. You should give it a shot and if you like it, play the older ones. Why was Far Cry 3 unplayable? When I played it (on PS3) I never experienced any problems. Blood Dragon is so good though. I'd say better then FC3 itself, not to say FC3 is bad. They're both really fun. But Blood Dragon is just so ridiculous, it's great.

I'm guessing your not a Bioshock or Sly Cooper fan? No Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon?? I call blasphemy on this list!

I liked BioShock Infinite well enough in the moment, but as time passed I've grown progressively less fond of it... I'm still mighty intrigued by its Rapture DLC, though.

As for Sly Cooper, I completely forget that even existed! I have zero investment in the series, but I may be willing to give it a shot before the year is up. And as for Blood Dragon, I decided against that since I found the base game of Far Cry 3 to be nigh unplayable for me on PS3. I could always get it on the 360, which is apparently a little better, but eh... just doesn't feel worth it.

Reading this reminds me that I never made it past that first fight in Revengeance on Revengeance difficulty. I should go make another go at that once I'm done with GTA V.

@yummylee: Yeah, I heard that Platinum and Kojima sort of cancel out each other's own worst excesses in MGR, and given how absolutely sick of Bayonetta's brand of crazy I was by the end of that game, I'm probably good with that.

I think my list will be mostly Indies this year. Not because I rate them higher, necessarily, but because I've been cut off from my wonderful free rentals.

I think the exception will be SR4. I'll still end up buying it before 2014, despite being as cheap as I am.

Or so they can put in a rudimentary sonic-styled kart-racing game... @_@' Man, now my mind is fluttering with possibilities!

I think it's telling that I haven't touched any of these games yet. I own Tomb Raider and intend to play SRIV and MGR before the year is through, but most of me staying bleeding-edge current was relegated to the early parts of the year with DmC (yes), Fire Emblem (YES) and Dead Space 3 (NO).

I will look forward to reading your MGR write up! As it'll no doubt deserve one. I especially love MGR for striking the right amount of balance of Japanese nonsense, self-awareness, and some actual MGS-style storytelling without any of it getting in the way of the other. As I noticed we both agree upon that Bayonetta takes it over the edge, I think it's worth noting how MGR was able to successfully combine enough Platinum humour with just enough Kojima seriousness to tip it down a little... Just enough so it doesn't feel overly preachy nor too intentionally stupid for its own good.

FIX THIS.

You got the money, for sure... And just look at my shopping list up there! I'm not going to gamble £150 or whatever for a 3DS+Fire Emblem on a whim. I can still smell the burn marks from buying that El Shaddai after following your advice.

Gambling up to £30-£40 (in monthly doses) at most tends to be my threshold these days...

Anyway, here's my list. I really ought to put my reasoning behind my ordering and all that, but whatevs. The Last of Us is one of the best 4-star games I've ever played. =P

@pr1mus: I played DmC, but the more I think back to it... the more i realise while I think it's a fine game and all, I still much prefer the DMC ways of old -- specifically DMC3 and DMC4, and when I say DMC4 I mean the combat and, well, nothing else. I didn't think the story was good enough to make up for the weaker combat and clumsy boss battles... Dante's still the best he's ever been as a character in DmC, though, there's no doubt that. The soundtrack, too.

Still, I only completed it once and have very little desire to go back to it, which is a downright alien sort of outcome when it comes DMC and me.
