Top 10 Popular Games that dont deserve the hate they receive.

They sold bazzilions, they are be talked about now and will still be talked about in years to come, yet people hate them. Call it trying to be hip, call it being an attention grabber, call it trying to be an individual.

I call it the inability recognise the greatness a game has.

List items

  • "Eh kills alienz and doesnt afraid of anything."

The most hated popular game of all time.

Halo 3 is THE marmite of games, you either love it or hate it, it refined on what the series had done and added great new aspects such as forge and theatre mode which i can foresee becoming a regular in console FPS's in the future.

it didn't innovate and is far from perfect but it stuck steady and refined the console FPS to near perfection.

  • "ARIES DIES."

A brilliant game that showed the world what the future of 3d RPG's could become. Mainly hated for it's fanbase, corny dialogue, and reuse of "group of teenagers/young adults save world from evil" story line.

  • "FOOTBAWL."

This goes out to all madden games, but since 10 is the most recent i will choose that.

Each year may simply be a new feature here and there with an updated roster but at the core of the package it is still the classic football game that came out 10 year ago.

Remember folks just because EA are releasing it over and over again does not mean it isn't at its core a great game.

  • "The pre-cursor to human hedgehog relations."

Though admittedly the begging of the end for sonic, this game when it came out was pretty fun. Toady this game looks terrible as it has not aged well but it really does not deserve some of the hate and worst game ever titles it receives.

  • "Not just some pre-set waggle mechanic"

Ok this did come pre-packaged with the wii but so what?

It is a fun little sports game that (sort of) replicates the sports it has. I think the problem here was people were expecting perfect emulation of the sport with 1to1controls and forgot to have mindless fun with the family while playing it.

  • "The terrible game of legend."

i'm putting this game low on the list as it is not very good, it's mediocre at best. But that is all it is.

There were plenty of games on the 2600 that were as deep as a puddle and this is no different, so why does it get all the hate that it has? what makes this game any different?

Hype and marketing choices by Atari is what doomed this game, a poor choice on their part spending so much producing more carts than consoles existed but i will say this, most gamers today cannot imagine what the standard for games were like back then (i will admit i was not around then either) and trying to go back to this game and judge it fairly is damn near impossible.

Did it contribute to the gaming crash of '83?

    maybe.

Does it deserve the hate it has?

no, it is a simple boring game, but i feel i've played games that deserve worse.

  • "Job and Social life be damned, i have my paladin to level up."

I will keep this short as i have not played this one myself, but even i can see this games merits. Another victim of the mainstream haters virus i believe, backed up by fans of other MMO's that are upset that the game they play isn't featured in an episode of south park.

  • "You can't be me i'm a rockstar"

Parents and musicians not big fans of this one. As Chad Kroger would have you believe you should pick up a real guitar instead of wasting your time with this game, they must have forgotten people play games to have fun....

  • "Gotta catch em all."

These games have the madden syndrome, released every few years with an updated roster and a few new features. The reason i believe these two are disliked so much is due to the age of the original games.

Everyone likes to believe that the games they played when they were young were the best, its human nature. I think this game suffers because of this. All of the kids that played pokemon red and blue when they were young had moved onto smoking pot wearing baggy clothes and talking sass when this game came out. A consequence of this is all the people that grew up with the game believed that it was childish and they expected it to grow up with them.

  • "Hey, listen"

Not hated as much as the rest of the games on this list but after the success of the ocarina of time some were expecting too much of this game. Disappointed by the cartoony graphics many saw this game as childish which is a huge shame as it's one great game that i think looks gorgeous.

Halo 3 was a great game.

Final Fantasy VII was garbage.
Sonic Adventure was cool because of the whale.
Wii Sports is fun for everyone.
Guitar Hero was fun up until 2.
Wind Waker is probably the best Zelda since A Link to the Past.

Commentary!

Halo 3- I really didn't enjoy the campaign as much as I did Halo 2's. What sold the game for me, though, was theater and Forge. It was fun to mess with until I started playing Team Fortress 2.

Sonic Adventure- I caught this one on the Gamecube: found it to be pretty bad. This may because I played Sonic Adventure 2: Battle years before, or because I hated Big the Cat with a passion of the Christ.

Wii Sports- Not a classic, but a decent game.

E.T.- You're right. I've played E.T. and read it's history; people don't understand what this thing went through to see the light of day. It was bad, but I can think of even worse games.

Wind Waker- I think the cartoon graphics shock died when it turned out to be a pretty awesome game.

@RockmanBionics: Interesting thoughts, its funny to hear how expectations and fanbase hype had coloured you on the game before you played it. So many people fall into that trap.

Good list. I would have a lot to say about all of these games but as it's late and I need sleep I'm just gonna pick one: Final Fantasy 7. I picked this one since I recently bought it on the Playstation Network.

I had only played it once before when I borrowed it from a friend. I also borrowed FF8 and FF9 from him at the same time (this was around the time when FF9 had just been released) I didn't like the look of the game at and thought the blocky characters were so ugly compared to those in 8 and 9. Once I got past the train part I lost interest (when it came to the other games I got about halfway through 8 before loosing interest. 9 is the only non-remake Final Fantasy game I have ever finished to date.)

Either way, for some reason, over the years I had grown more accepting of some parts of JRPG's that would otherwise make me lose interest (like grinding), so I decided to give it another go. By this time I had already been spoiled to the mayor events of the game (deathsofaries, cataclysmic event involving meteor etc.) but I was still curious about all that inbetween. I also think playing it on my PSP instead of a big TV makes putting up with the aged graphics a bit easier.

What I found really surprised me. There was an actual game underneath all that nostalgia and hate I'd heard about. It was buildt sort of like a 16-bit rpg only it was 3D, which was kind of funny to see. But most importantly, this wasn't a self-aware remake trying it's best to appeal to it's fans with reimagined scenes, graphics and voicework. This was the actual game as it was before it became a cult classic and before it became a much better one in your memory.

I guess part of me being confused about what the game really was came from me playing a part of Crisis Core. Now that's a self-aware fanwank if I ever saw one, oh well. I've only gotten a few hours into it but I intend to finish it some day.

Hm...maybe I should have just written a blog...
Overly looooong comment is just that.
