Here is my top ten games this years. I know there where a few notable ones I didn't get to play like Portal 2 and Batman, which is why they aren't on the list.

List items

  • Probably a pretty standard answer, but for good reason. I really enjoyed Oblivion outside of the oblivion gates, so that they made another game with another large world to explore and replaced those gates with random dragon attacks, it's like they made this game just for me!

  • I had absolutely no interest in the first two Saints Row games, so I was prepared to pass on this one too. When E3 came around people started showing me videos that gained my interest, and the buzz coming off it when it came out convinced me to try it out. This game is insane and I loved every minute of it. Almost every mission seemed creatively different while at the same time gave the impression their whole plan going into each one was just "fuck it, we'll figure something out."

  • I really enjoyed Demon's Souls, so an open world sequel sounded great to me. It overall felt less challenging than Demon's Souls, but that didn't bother me too much since it was still quite unforgiving, and overall a lot of fun.

  • I managed to avoid all information on this game waiting for it to come out. I wanted to go in clean and I knew from Uncharted 2 that if I watched any previews I would have some of the more impressive set pieces ruined for me. Going into the game not knowing what to expect made the story that much more enjoyable, although the aiming felt a little off.

  • I thought the original inFamous was a fantastic game, which may have worked against this one a little as it was hard to innovate on. The game didn't add too much notable new stuff, but I enjoy what it did and was happy to play another round of inFamous.

  • The last time I played a Mortal Kombat was UMK3 in arcades ten years ago. When I started seeing this game being shown off the nostalgia hit me HARD. It had a dream roster for someone like me who stopped after the third game, it looked great and didn't feel too complicated which I appreciated as someone who doesn't play many fighting games.

  • More assassin's creed. Still fun to play but much more derivative than Brotherhood was. Bomb crafting was an interesting addition but not something I used very often.

  • A lot of people probably forgot this came out this year. This game was a fun sequel to the first, with lots of exciting moments and terrible beasties. I experimented more with weapons in this game than I did the first, and enjoyed some of them quite a bit, like the trip bombs.

  • Battlefield continues to be the only shooter I really enjoy to play online. The large scale and potential for chaos is always a lot of fun. Also base jumping. Oh I think there's a single player or something too.

  • Originally I was disappointed this game didn't have the enjoyable online co-op mode the second one had. After hearing stories about how interesting the story campaign was I decided to try it out, having enjoyed the previous two games. The campaign proved to be an enjoyable experience, and left me wondering how they would handle the series from here.
