Top 10 Favorite Games of 2011

1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

What can I say that hasn't already been said? This is the biggest game of the year in terms of content so it's hard not to imagine it being my #1. And I didn't even like Oblivion, so that goes to show how much they've improved here. I still want more expansion on the multiple quest-route ala Fallout: New Vegas but what's here is still great.

2. Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten

This game is solely responsible for getting me interested in SRPGs again. And it should be commended for that alone. Also, it's really good. The only thing that holds it back in my opinion are some Japanese development quirks that seem frozen in time. Like the complete lack of auto-saving and uneven difficulty at times. Look for my full review... soonish.

3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Admittedly, I never played the original. Yes, please proceed to throw rotten tomatoes at me for a few minutes. But this is still a great game on it's own. Story, style, gameplay is all great. Boss fights were a bit of a let-down but that doesn't hold the game back much. I'm now very interested in this universe, which reminds a lot of "Ghost in the Shell" for some reason.

4. inFamous 2

While I'm puzzled by the abrupt ending, I can happily report that the journey was up to par. The new in-game cutscenes look great and I really enjoyed the tension in the story this time around. Great gameplay made even greater. This sequel improves on everything that was already done well in the original and adds on to it. I've spent countless hours messing around in the Mission Creator and am still having a blast with this game.

5. Resistance 3

Just read my review. I go into much more detail there but fucking hell, I love this game. If only it was a good 3-4 hours longer, it would be perfect. And I mean that too.

6. Saints Row The Third

While not as good as 2, which was damn near-perfect. This is still quite fun. I just feel the focused too much on some areas and not enough on others. But this is an excellent foundation to build more off of.

7. Mortal Kombat

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Mortal Kombat is the best Mortal Kombat since Mortal Kombat. Finally, my favorite fighting series is back on the map. They did almost everything right here. The only thing it's missing is a Versus CPU mode. Which boggles my mind how you could forget that but whatever. I'm also very excited about the upcoming PS-Vita version. MK on the go? Yes, please.

8. Dead Space 2

Okay, this is one game that I can't complain about being too short for once. At about 15 hours, this is a lengthy and solid third-person shooter. Atmosphere is nailed, although for whatever reason I just can't get scared. Not sure why. Much more varied than it's predecessor, this is Dead Space done right. This was a great way to kick off 2011. I love the style of this universe and frantic gameplay. I hope that Dead Space evolves into a "Resident Evil-esque" franchise. I'd soak it all up, I tell ya.

9. Shadows of the Damned

This has to be the most under-rated game of 2011. It was crazy, it was funny and it was simply a blast to play-through. Again, this was a relatively short title, at about 9 hours but damn it was good. I'm still upset at how poorly it sold, (Only about 24,000 copies sold between both platforms worldwide) and hope people will give it a chance now that the price has gone down. Shove it in your console and have a grand ol' time.

10. Portal 2

I'm not exactly sure where I stand on Portal 2. I enjoyed it mostly for it's characters and humor, but as a puzzle game it doesn't have the same novelty anymore. Except for a few near the end, most of the puzzles were disappointingly easy. Also, while definitely much longer than the original, Portal 2 is still quite short on it's own merit. That being said, I did enjoy Portal 2. I just don't think it's good enough to justify the fans that go ape-shit over it.
