Best games of 2012 and other related nonsense

It's that time again when lots of us make lists of the best games they've played this year. Some people agree, some don't and some really don't care.

I've certainly not played a lot of games this year so the list probably won't include some of the big hits of the year. For example I haven't played Dishonored or Far Cry 3 yet.

Best Action RPGs of this year

Torchlight 2 (loved the first game and really enjoying this).

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (shame the developer went under, hopefully someone can pick up the IP and go with it).

Legend of Grimrock (reminds me sooo much of the classic Dungeon Master).

Yes I know there's three in this section but they are all good.

Best adventure game

Walking Dead (For the awesome story tellers at Telltale Games).

Special mention for Resonance (this takes me back to the Sierra days).

Best shooter

Spec Ops: The Line (some people may not agree with this but having played Borderlands 2 and gotten bored of it after a while I won't be putting that down).

Best game ending credits video thing

Black Ops II

Most disappointing ending

Mass Effect 3 (After importing my character from the first and through the second to the third game you kill my character off)

--------

Some random stuff

The game i've spent most time playing this year

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel

The easiest rare achievement i've gotten this year

Tomb Raider - read 100 graves in the game Sacred 2: Fallen Angel. I don't know how this is actually rare as it's really easy to do and the first five minutes of the game has a graveyard with at least 30 graves in it.

The game I keep going back to after all these years

C&C Tiberian Sun (still the best C&C game in my opinion just in front of C&C Red Alert II).

Sooooooo many great looking games this year at E3

Sooooooo many great looking games this year at E3.

Crysis 3, Beyond: Two Souls, Dishonored, Divinity: Original Sin, Far Cry3 (loving the co-op), Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Metro: Last Light (loved the 2033 but still think the ending is just plain strange), Quantum Conundrum (looks quirky), Sleeping Dogs (GTA style, but how many times has undercover cop been used in a story?), South Park: The Stick of Truth, Splinter Cell: Blacklist (feels like conviction), Star Trek (2013) (it'll probably turn out to be another terrible Star Trek game but i'm crossing fingers here), The Last of Us, Tomb Raider (seems to have gone more Uncharted), Watch Dogs.

I has finally happened my launch XBox 360 is dying!

Last night while playing Quake 4 on my 360 the screen started to flicker, it did it twice and then the screen went black.  I can hear the console startup but get no display or red ring.
I've just ordered an x-clamp kit of Ebay and hopefully that should fix it otherwise it might be a new 360 for me.  Worst still Saboteur arrived this morning just to rub it in.

Thanks Bethesda

Thanks to the people over at Bethesda i'm now the proud owner of a free Fallout 3 premium theme as well as some outstanding games.  Fallout 3, Oblivion, Morrowind need we say any more.

Guess I was a bit behind the times because I didn't know anything about the free theme until I got the email last week.  Only thing now is for Microsoft to get rid of the huge grey area at the bottom of the screen and make all the menus transparent after a few seconds (user configurable of course).

25 years of Elite

Happy 25th Birthday Elite and may you always be considered an outstanding game.

I honestly find it astounding that this awesome game had trouble finding a publisher because it didn't have a high score table.  Lucky Acorn Soft weren't of the high score table / three lives mentality and released it on it's original platform the BBC Micro.  I remember using the BBC Micro at school with it's distinctive black keyboard and orange function keys, oh man do I feel old now.

BBC Micro:
MOS Technology 6502 chip running at 2MHz (the same processor used in the Atari 800 XL , Commodore VIC-20 and the Apple IIe etc.  It's direct successor the 6510 was used in the Commodore 64).
32K RAM
8 colours
640x256 pixel resolution
4 channel SN76489 sound chip

A mighty machine and worth a purchase just to play some of the BBC's games.

Invisible walls

After playing Call of Duty: World at War for a few minutes I ran slap bang into an invisible wall.  I don't know if it's just me but I feel invisible walls are a sign of bad level design.  You could get away with it in the days of old because of the severe limitations with game engines but nowadays there's nothing really stopping a level designer putting in a cliff face or an impassable river, anything other than an invisible wall.
I'm running through a deep jungle and then I hit an invisible wall, talk about take you out of the experience, game developers should ban the use of them.

What's everybody elses thoughts?
