  • This game gets a lot of heat for being overrated and disappointing, but I loved it despite knowing there is some truth to that. The creature AI was pretty impressive, and still is to some extent. And the game had a fun user community.

  • Probably the most replayable MGS. Sneaking through the jungle is just plain fun. Easily the most memorable characters in any game ever - The Boss, The Cobras, Young Ocelot - and each one is a blast to fight. Plus, the ladder.

  • The single player is funny and memorable (if frustrating at times), but what really puts this on my list is the multiplayer mod for the PC version. Fucking around San Andreas with 50+ people (goons) was insanely fun.

  • I played a hell of a lot of Quake 2. The layouts of Edge and Warehouse will forever be etched in my memories.

  • It's fucking DOOM man.

  • I had a reliable group of friends to play this game with on a regular basis, and the game itself is very solid. This is a recipe for success! Hard to replicate, and rarely happens naturally. I think I'm going to go play some right now.

  • I was in denial for a while about how amazing SMW is. I insisted that SMB3 was a better platformer with tighter controls. Or that SMW2 was a creative departure compared to SMW's pale imitation of true Mario platforming. But now I realize that's bullshit, this is the definitive Mario game, and will forever be.

  • Portal is like a master-class in first-person narrative game design. I debated internally whether this or BioShock deserved a spot here, because I feel they represent the same thing on a list like this. They came out about a month apart, and they both feature a relatively leisurely paced single player narrative. Neither game's story is flawless, though I think BioShock tried for more and unfortunately also faltered more often. In the end, gameplay puts the final nail in BioShock's coffin, as Portal is easily the more fun game to play.

  • It's been a long time since I got sucked into an online competitive videogame. I've put over 1000 hours into this game and while I don't play as much as I used to, I still play several hours a week. Even when I'm having a bad game (always my teammates' fault, naturally), there are frequent fun/hilarious moments.

  • Spelunky is a game that changed how I look at videogames. I used to avoid "hard" games like this. The idea of playing something and having to start over every time I died seemed ridiculous in 2013. And I don't know that I would've stuck with it if not for the advent of streaming/YouTube. Seeing what was possible in the game made me want to keep playing it. Once I found my rhythm, it was endlessly rewarding.

Any list with both Black & White AND Quake 2 at the top of it deserves a recommendation!
