Game of the Year 2013

Well, here it is. Another year, another Game of the Year list. This year is chock full of awesome new releases that I did and didn't play, mainly because of the purchase of a PC capable of playing the hundreds of Steam games I had accumulated. The first 10 games of the list are my favorites for the year in order, while the rest are equally ranked as honorable mentions.

List items

  • My game of the year is, no surprise, The Last of Us. The story, the characters, the sounds, the atmosphere are all amazing. And goddamn that game looked fantastic. Some don't like the combat and I can see why, but I think it works. I always thought that I never knew what could happen during an encounter and that was exciting. And THAT ENDING.

  • Gone Home is great. I know I'm not the only one who thought the worst had happened at the end of that game. Every aspect of the design of the game was perfect.

  • This is a great game. It's a grind. It's traditional. But it's one of the best JRPGs of the generation. I started the game and was immediately hooked and INVESTED in the story. Why is Studio Ghibli so good at tugging those heartstrings.

  • I'm not one to really play games in beta, but... Star. Bound. Never have I played a game and immediately went out of my way to host a server. And it's a beta. I don't even know how much I'll love it when it's done.

  • I got Pokemon Y. Fuck that super majestic deer. The bird of death is RAD. Speaking of hardcore RPG elements, I love how the developers took out the RPG elements that always made me cringe since Yellow.

  • You got me Ubisoft, I'm back in the Animus. I have no idea how you did it, but after AC3 we had a falling out. Also, just combine this game with Sid Meier's Pirates.

  • A Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda game. Seeing just how carefully Nintendo tread on nearly everyone's nostalgia like that is amazing, and I'd love to see it happen to their other franchises (not really, just Metroid).

  • What happens when you take a ton of great games and smash them together? Dumb shit, that's what. Though every damn time that The Touch starts playing on the in-game radio I can't help but have the biggest, shit-eating grin on my face.

  • Obligatory GTA V placeholder. GTA had an extraordinarily great story, and -- Goddammit Rockstar, just make a new Red Dead.

  • The latest Tales entry definitely is on this list. Great story, memorable characters, and TWO playthroughs? Yes please.

  • For some reason, 2013 was the year I 'really' got back into fighting games. Persona 4 Arena not only had characters I already love, it was a great re-entry point for me. Can't wait for the sequel.

  • Say what you want about the latest Batman, I loved it. It was a great ride in Batman's past and more of the same great gameplay isn't bad either. Arkham Origins really earns its place as an honorable mention because of Extra Life, where it kept me sane in the darkest hours of the marathon.

  • LEGO games have always been dumb fun, and Marvel's turn wasn't any different. It was also loaded with obscure characters that are always fun to see. And playing through some of the levels as Aunt May is pretty dumb.

  • That DLC finally came out on PS3! But then I got a PC so it really didn't matter. At least another hundred hours were lost in the land of the dragonborn this year.

  • More XCOM is good XCOM (unless it's The Bureau).

  • The Kingdom Hearts 3 hype train tour starts here. Looking forward to playing through the rest of the series with the KH2 HD pack.

  • Finally a Tomb Raider game that I truly enjoyed. It looked great, played great, and kept me interested unlike any previous Lara adventure.
