    Virtual Boy

    Platform »

The Virtual Boy pioneered portable 3D gaming, but became Nintendo's biggest (and arguably only) market blunder. Despite innovative display technology, various design and marketing mistakes doomed it to poor sales and quick retirement. Fewer than two dozen titles came out worldwide and only 14 in North America.

I rented one of these from Blockbuster for a couple days when they first came out.  It seemed neat but I had no budget for anything like it.  Later on I found one at KB Toys for $20 and bought it.  This headache inducing, hunched-over, spine-breaking machine was actually fun for about 10 minutes at a time.  In fact, the games reminded you to take frequent breaks.  Very different from Nintendo's multiplayer family machine of today.

I had no problems with it, really... I never actually read the booklet and just played for as long as I wanted.

It wasn't until years later when I got internet that I read online that it was giving people headaches and such.

Don't forget the required 6 double A batteries!

    You know what's crazy, too?
Is that Nintendo's support page still has a Virtual Boy section!!
    lol.
They "no longer carry replacement parts or accessories" but you can always use their handy Guide to tell you to look in pawn shops, flea markets and garage sales

I just remember winning one of these in a paper football game...yes, a paper football game. It was either the greatest thing I've ever won, or maybe I actually lost the game and that was my punishment...I will never know the true answer to that question.

I've played the Virtual Boy all day before and the best method I found was on my back with the visor sitting on my face.

    Didn't help my eyes though.

@MattC: the fact that you could not strap it to your head and wear it like goggles was a big annoyance for me. aside from the eye related headaches, you could never find a comfortable position with the damn thing.
