Jesse Ventura Would Be Proud.

Hello everyone and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight, I am your host as always! As you may have noticed design changes to the site are still rolling out. The most notable example this week being the new in-chat reply system. For those that are concerned about the new system just based on the day of its release please rest assured that that version of the system was incomplete and it is still being worked on and improved. For those of you that were or are unable to log onto the live chat try clearing your cache and restarting your browser and seeing if that helps you out. For those of you that have ordered one of the Nighthawks Posters from a while back rest assured that the order for the posters has been placed and they are being made as we speak! Finally the Giant Bomb moderation team would like you to assist us in saving everyone a bit of a headache. Due to a glitch threads and blogs cannot be moved to game specific boards. As a result please ensure that all of your blogs and threads are attached to the correct board.

Clips of the Week

I have THREE videos this week! The first comes from @questionmarkman who has compiled every single one of Brad's deaths while playing Volgarr the Viking...his video is over FORTY MINUTES LONG! @turboman's latest "Best of Giant Bomb" video is all about the best moments of Random PC Game and permanent friend Dave Snider. Finally LieutenantEddy is back with another Bombcast animated clip showing off the staff's latest "Year of Luigi" conversation.

I Play Video Games - Not My Cup of Tea

Author's Note: It has been a while since I last posted one of these blogs but for those that don't know it is a reoccurring joke that I do not play a lot of video games. The only issue that I have with this joke is that it's mostly true. Part of it is work, and another part is my own personal problems with time management. Regardless of the reason I'm trying to get better. So please join my as I try to rectify an injustice.

A Virus Named Tom

As hinted on the last one of these back in November of 2013 I indicated that I was playing A Virus Named Tom, and I was not enjoying myself. Since then I have been intermittently playing it in thirty minute to one hour burst. Ultimately this is the optimal way to play most puzzle games, but my resentment towards A Virus Named Tom continued unabated.

Oh the Hell with this

A Virus Named Tom commits what I consider to be a cardinal sin in puzzle games. With the progression of every single level there’s a new mechanic to create difficulty as you progress. This is fine the first couple of times, but eventually you hit a gameplay wall. Whenever puzzle games rely on this strategy there comes a time when the game expects you to micro-manage everything in a matter of seconds. At that point you either “get it” or you don’t, and you might be able to guess where I stood by the time I reached the final stage of A Virus Named Tom. You have to flip puzzle pieces, avoid bugs, grace them ever so slightly to get extra time, and plant well timed “bombs." Slap on a countdown timer and things just got a bit too hectic for my tastes.

So at some point I just decided to stop playing A Virus Named Tom rather than seeing it through until the end. At that point I decided that if I was going to play a frustrating game it was going to be more than a Pipe Dream derivative with a “light” story.

VVVVVV

I must say that as someone who doesn’t really enjoy the “masocore,” VVVVVV was a fun time, but this might be all that I can handle. Masocore games are designed exactly opposite to what I want to see in my video games, and as a result I avoid them like the plague.

One of my fundamental issues with the genre of masocore is that I have never really been a fan of “designed frustration,” and the caveats this entails. Part of it is how trivial death ends up becoming, and another is that this genre as a whole does not reward genuine experimentation. On the first point I oftentimes don’t understand why I am not able to get past certain obstacles or why I had finally conquered others. Solutions are sudden and death occurs swiftly which prevents real productive meditation on ones actions. The only real solution in this regard is to see things as the developer which I will extrapolate on further. This also leads to my second point of experimentation. Experimentation can only occur in video games if the consequences of dying are light, and if it is possible to reach multiple right conclusions when presented a problem or obstacle. Masocore games usually permit neither and as a result do not permit genuine experimentation.

So what do masocore games value most of all? Revelation and progression. Revelation is the emotional sense of finally understanding the design logic behind a puzzle or obstacle after having been murdered so many times. As the player starts to understand the logic of the designer they begin to feel they are getting better at the game. This is the only way to get better at the game as few of the obstacles have more than one real solution disregarding bugs.

Now in regards to progression this is the ultimate reward for masocore games. The real punishment in masocore games is not death, but the failure to progress further in the game. Whereas in other genres you might be able to avoid certain situations or side quests you know you would have issues with masocore games do not permit this. If there is even one mechanic or type of situation you find especially difficult you are, for lack of a better word, shit out of luck. You as the player must master everything, otherwise you will get nothing.

I say all of this merely to point out why I have problems with this particular genre of games. After five hours of trying and almost two thousand deaths I finally beat VVVVVV. I also should say that I am thankful that VVVVVV has a myriad of well-placed checkpoints and the look of the game was a charming homage to the ZX Spectrum. However, even then I find the overall design to be “eh” so to speak.

Proteus

So after discussing restrictive game design we move to the other side of the game design spectrum with Proteus. In fact Proteus maybe pushes things a little too far on the other side of the gaming spectrum towards anarchy.

Proteus is a sandbox game of the walking variety à la Dear Esther or Thirty Flights of Love. The difference here is that Proteus lacks a formal narrative and instead relies on audio and visual “flair” to encourage user exploration. This lack of a formal narrative is admittedly a distinctive aspect of Proteus, but it is also one of its weaknesses. The complete lack of any real or tangible objectives caused me to struggle find any real benefit to discovering new objects or sounds. Sure each object and thing makes a distinctive sound, but because everything is spread apart you aren’t really creating music, nor are you “solving” anything.

This is actually a pleasant surprise in the game

What you are doing is inducing transitions from Spring to Summer, from Summer to Fall, and finally from Fall to Winter. While the transitions are notable in their own regard I just didn’t feel like they were special enough. Now the exception to that would be the transition to Winter which reveals that the island is actually dead and what you had experienced up to that point was a reflection of what the island once was. It is a beautiful message, but it is one conveyed using only the most barebones of means.

It is however difficult to condemn Proteus outright. It is a very brief audio and visual experience that ends up being more dazzling than actually “fun” to play. It just lacks a sense of established mood to place its conclusion into a better, more powerful context.

Other Stuff

I almost did a write up of Divekick, as someone who does not enjoy fighting games. If you wanted to know it is an enjoyable riot that is a little beyond my comprehension than what I had hoped. I had hoped that a fighting game with a two button fighting system would more greatly value timing and reflexes versus more technical technique. The online community is a reflection of this considering how I got my ass handed to myself time and time again. At least getting defeated is hilarious though.

I do not like Kill la Kill (anymore). Expect a formal review of the series once it has concluded. Might I recommend Space Dandy or Samurai Flamenco instead?

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I am your host as always. Well let's talk about not being a dick. As some of you may or may not be aware of we have seen an increase in trollish behavior on staff articles. The stance of the Giant Bomb staff and the moderation team is simple. Everyone is free to level criticism related to the site and opinions shared by the staff in a civil and constructive manner. What you cannot do is devolve to insults, nor are you allowed to attack the character of any staff member or users in an inflammatory manner. Failing to abide by this very simple directive is in violation of the Forum Rules of this site and will result in moderation. In happier news feel free to give the latest episode of the "Just Talking" Podcast which features our very own Patrick as a guest! Useful User Reviews

Hey everyone things are acting up for reviews. There's a bit of a glitch with the site right now. Basically if post your review link without the "/" at the end it'll lead to your review, but if you do it with the "/" it'll link to the review page for that game. Because the site automatically adds the ending "/" to every link you post, there's currently no way to properly link reviews.

Rays_Gaming_Rants recently played through Bravely Default's demo and has written about how it does what all demos should do, similarly Chemystery gave the Bravely Default demo and shares his thoughts about that and Papers, Please. BlueFish finally saw Indie Game: The Movie, whereas JayEH joined Vinny in defeating Dark Souls this week. TheMasterDS tried out Chrstina Love's "It Just Ain't Your Story," and extrapolates on why he absolutely hated it. After taking a medical leave of absence MooseyMcMan has his much belated GOTY Awards, The Moosies. Hailinel details how A Link Between Two World has helped him rediscover the Zelda franchise. Check out dankempster's gaming resolutions for 2014 and join him in creating easy and hard resolutions. Finally MajorMitch shares a monthly update on the games he has played, and KnifeySpoony has his late, but great, 2013 GOTY blog.

Special Thanks to metalliccookies for This Work of Art!

Hello and welcome to the first edition of the Community Spotlight for the year 2014! With the end of the Game of the Year content you can expect the staff to be back in action on Monday. Until then read site engineer Danny Chi's (aka @mrpibb) end of the year review of the site redesigns for Giant bomb, Comic Vine, and GameSpot. Speaking of end of the year stuff let's give @thatfrood a round of applause for hosting the 2013 Giant Bomb Community Game of the Year List project! Beyond that I have a ton of user created art work. @fobwashed created a Giant Bomb themed version of the Papers, Please startup screen. Someone else on Tumblr took the anime K-On! and replaced the characters with the Giant Bomb staff. Finally we have WiFi_Pirate's AMAZING "correction" of Life Magazine's Farewell issue:

Stand-up Work Duder!

Clip of the Week

For the first clip we have the Giant Bomb Warfarme guild, Heavy Industries, showing off the recent community event they had. For the second video someone on YouTube decided to take the intro of Giant Bomb's Day Two 2013 GotY video and put in a twenty minute loop, because hey why not?

The Community Spotlight - 12/27/2013 (GOTY 2013: Part Two)

Special Thanks to JokerSmilez's Wife for This Amazing Work of Art!

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Community Spotlight! Alright I'm not going to lie this edition was kind of a nightmare to make. You all wrote a ton of stuff for Game of the Year! That aside let's get on with the site housekeeping. If you downloaded the GOTY Bombcasts and noticed that Toto's "Africa" is inexplicably in the podcast description...yeah I have no idea why that's there. While @ltsquigs has left the building you can keep track of what he's doing on his recently created Tumblr account. Also as seen on the banner for this week @jokersmilez's wife is making embroideries in dedication of Ryan Davis and is donating the proceeds to the National Sleep Institute for Sleep Apnea Research. While her first has been sold she has room to make five more if you contact her Etsy or Twitter. With that let's get on with this content filled edition of the Community Spotlight!

Clip of the Week

So Andrew Allen made the GOTY theme that all of you have been enjoying on the Bombcast. He has posted the jazzy theme on YouTube for you to put on infinite loop if you so desire. TheBurlapLemur is back this week with another edition of the BiteSize Bomb which continues to highlight the best moments of every single Quick Giant Bomb has ever made. Finally @clintlandon made an animated Bombcast using only his iPad that adds a little 1920s charm to the GB staff.

Community GOTY Lists

Okay...let's get this straight/ I'm not going to write bios or headers for anything this week. Everyone has their own list filled with different groupings of games. Thank you to everyone who took the time to make a list on the site!

Community GOTY Blogs

As with before thank you to everyone who made a blog this year. Please continue to make blogs on the site throughout the next year.

Best of Blogs

These are teh great blogs that have nothing to do with GOTY stuff. Plenty of people discussed their favorite albums of 2013, @aurahack was able to even convince Jeff to re-explore K-pop. Unlike that camp granderojo has his favorite five books of the year. dankempster has finally completed Final Fantasy, and Gamer_152 tackles the thorny issue of digital rights on YouTube. benspyda decided to take the time to explain why he doesn't like Zelda games. Tireyo has started a blog series reviewing fan made video game movies, and SirOptimusPrime got nostalgic over one of his favorite old school adventure games, Gabriel Knight. Finally if you can make sense of Video_Game_King's new blog series...call me.

Fantastic Forums

Hopefully your Christmas was fun if you celebrate! Anyways we have a discussion thread related to the new season of The WalkinG Dead game and plenty of GOTY discussions worth partaking in. Do you buy into Paul Barnett's "Golden Age" theory? If so what do you think is your "Golden Age?" Finally clintlandon created the 1920s animated Bombcast clip seen in the Clips of the Week.
