Mission Accomplished. I'm the Top Platform Wiki Editor

Hell yeah:

No Caption Provided

It took a while and I got to that position in the most unorthodox way possible but I did it and I'm proud. I got there by mostly writing about old computers and failed video game consoles. I wrote comprehensive biographies that attempted to weave a narrative in a wiki. Some of them are better written than others, and I'll be the first to admit that 1) I need to work on formatting 2) Grammar and spelling is not my strong suit. With a few exceptions most of these were done way before I was a mod. In fact some were written when I first started making wiki edits when the point tabulation for wiki entries was a little messed up.

The biggies:
  • The Channel F - 1,034 points - This one was a massive undertaking. How could anyone write a +1,000 wiki entry about a console that was only being produced for less than six months? Well The Channel F is a forgotten hero in the video game industry that need some respect on Giant Bomb. Hopefully I gave it that.
  • 3DO - 967 points - In my mind the 3DO wasn't a failure. It was just ahead of its time. And you know what I don't care about how Jeff feels about it but I think that the 3DO was a better console than the Neo-Geo. There I said it.
  • Commodore 128 - 914 points - This is the entry that push me into the top position. I was talking (complaining) to Marino how I was never going to get any of the large wiki submission quests and then realized how this page was blank. Got the +700 point quest but missed the Major Fan quest by a hair.
  • VIC 20 - 772 points - I made it a habit to write about everything Commodore related. My desire was to write something like my C64 entry but more impressive.
  • Atari 7800 - 737 points - For some reason this was the entry that started my habit about writing about failed video game consoles. For some reason I find it fun to try and rationalize failure in the video game industry.
  • Atari 5200 - 731 points - Same thing as the 7800, but I talked a lot about the terrible controller. If I had to pick the 7800 and 5200 are my "best written" entries.
  • Commodore 64 - 491 points - One of my first console submissions. Far less substantial than my latter edits but still worth noting. I learned from this entry how I wanted to structure my future edits.
  • Odyssey  2 - 286 points - One of my first entries on the site with the Commodore 64 entry. Lowest point value doesn't mean it's not worth a read.

Glad Someone agrees with me that the 3DO is better than the Neo Geo! It was ahead of its time, if only it was released a year later!

I'm old enough to remember those, but I stayed with the success stories and what I could afford at the time. I did play a 3DO at a friend's house, it was okay. Good stuff ZombiePie, a little piece of history on Giant Bomb is yours.

@ArbitraryWater: If Crystal Dynamics weren't successful on the 3DO they would have never had the money to make any of the Legacy of Kain games. Need for Speed is also kind of big deal for me at least. Whatever the Might & Magic franchise was never something I enjoyed anyways. I'm not going to go any further in saying that I think the 3DO was a fine system that was the victim of poor marketing and suffered from an identity crises.

@ZombiePie: I wouldn't call either of those games system sellers though, especially for a console that cost SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS IN 1993 MONEY.

In any case, I blame the 3DO company for dragging down New World Computing (makers of the Might and Magic series, as well as their greatest work: Multimedia Celebrity Poker) with them. In the early 2000s when they weren't doing so well, they had both Heroes of Might and Magic IV and Might and Magic IX released earlier than either game should have been (and in the case of M&M IX, a pre alpha state that even fan made patches fail to save from general mediocrity). Then again, they were literally the only part of 3DO that made any sort of serious money.

@ArbitraryWater:  The Need for Speed franchise was exclusive to the 3DO and got its start on that platform. Crash 'n Burn was awesome and that was by Crystal Dynamics which was originally a second party 3DO exclusive developer. Then there was the Army Men series which was originally good and exclusive to the 3DO and when the console bellied up the series was never the same.

@Hailinel: I'm gonna be honest with you I was a major image uploader when the site debuted.

@ArbitraryWater:   Yup.  I felt a sense of vindication of sorts when the staff announced that the wiki point distribution was rebalanced to give more points out for text edits and eliminated the massive points for image floods.

As someone who's console experience started with the N64, I can't really say to have had much exposure to any failed consoles (unless you want to be snarky and say that the Gamecube was a failed console). I certainly am fascinated by them, especially the 3DO with it's "More than the high end PS3 at launch and that's not even adjusting for 12 years of inflation" price and the "I don't think it was actually 64-bit" Jaguar. It's not that either of those systems don't have good games, it's just that all the good games they have are ports. I can't think of a single standout exclusive for either of them. I don't know. Bad Consoles are bad.

@Hailinel:  What? So you're saying that uploading creepy voyeuristic fan art of female characters and a bunch of random screenshots are no longer a viable way to get a bunch of wiki points like they were in the hectic days of August 2008? Oh dang. Then again, I got around 90% of my current Wiki point total in that era, when adding stuff to a list was the most efficient way of doing anything because of how long it took to get your submission approved.

Congrats.  Actually, if it weren't for a couple of users that got insane points for uploading images in the early days of GB, I'd currently be the top wiki editor for characters.
