The Community Spotlight - 02/10/2011

Many Thanks to FoxxFireArt for Creating This Banner!

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Community Spotlight! Well there's a lot of housekeeping to go over this week so let's get into it! Whiskey media employee Daniel (aka Internet Daniel) has posted some Whiskey Media Quest stats worth checking out. There's a counter petition to Ryan's petition to end the NDX podcast...it is far more popular than Ryan's petition. I'm not sure where to put it but I guess this is appropriate, but a handful of users are working on a substantial Dawn of War 2 game guide. Check it out if you are interested. However probably the biggest news this week probably was the announcement of the two new additions to the mod team (PsEG & Sweep). Congratulations guys!

Then there were memes...Some think it is obnoxious or annoying to make designs or t-shirt based on every little thing that the guys talk about. I on the other hand am completely astounded by the creativity that the Giant Bomb Community is sometimes capable of! I mean check out some of these designs:

Upcoming Events

  • Vito's Game Giveaway #4 -- Due Feb. 13th -- Check out the details HERE!

  • Giant Bomb Community StarCraft II Tournament #7 -- Feb 19th -- Sign up HERE!

  • Giant Bomb Community StarCraft II EU Tournamnet #5 -- Feb 12th -- Sign up HERE!

Wonderful Wikis

Well we have a truly unusual medley of wikis this week. The return of the great showcasable Street Fight characters is here. Blood is a fantastically written wiki for a game many have never heard of. PsEG's wiki article for the Aston race track is everything you ever needed to know about that track. If you ever needed advice on escaping a sinking car then you should check out the escaping a sinking car concept page, it's also hilarious. Finally Plants vs. Zombies gets bonus points for being a wonderfully formatted wiki.

Lovable Lists

Once again nostalgia is the name of the game for the lists this week. With Marino's list truly tapping his nostalgia for his favorite games for the various systems he has owned during his video game playing life. Many thanks to Video_Game_King for having created as many wiki pages as he has. Vi02 explains how he has culture his gaming tastes and preferences over the years. Finally user killerjt points out that there are a lot of food branded games that have been release in the history of video games.

Best of Blogs/Fantastic Forums

As the games keep rolling the Giant Bomb Community keeps writing. Jakob187 continues to extols the virtues of the Dead Space franchise. Mento compares Dead Space II to Doom II and observes the change in game design over the years. Nikral talks about good documentaries about video games. Make_Me_Mad has posted his first blog about Re-Enduring the Persona 4 Endurance Run. ZanzibarBreeze has made a wonderful time capsule of the great HotSpot moments back in 2006. Finally congratulations to user EpicSteve for his successful Achievement Contest!

Author's Note: Blah blah blah comment and provide a link to something you think is worth showcasing...Look this was one of the most exhausting and time consuming Spotlights I have ever worked on...I don't want to talk about why. However don't be shy in pimping your own wonderful creations. I'm gonna take a nap now if you don't mind.....

Wait

That's not the blog I suggested over Twitter. Was it? I mean, I'm fine with that being featured, but I thought I linked to the most recent blog I had done, about the game I made.

Posted by DocHaus

Wow, I wasn't expecting a rec on the review, but I'll take that as well. Thanks for the props, ZombiePie.

"Hey guys, he's a Pinball Wizard and that shit smells fucked up."

What? Keep playin' that silver ball.

Excellent work as always on this frightening amount of curated content that I have absolutely no time to enjoy reading.

God damn @ the Plants vs. Zombies page.

Comprehensive.

@JJWeatherman: @B0nd07: So here's the story. All Whiskey Media sites have this problem where if you hyperlink too many things on one post you'll run into scripting errors. At first it just takes longer, but as you keep going you have to start re-sending the scripts and eventually if you are not careful Firefox will crash. That's why the T-Shirts don't have linked info. I reached about 61 script errors on this single post and felt like if I went further I would be pushing my luck.
@BlazeHedgehog: That is in fact the blog you linked me on Twitter. Sorry if you wanted a different blog but I'm not editing the Spotlight...something bad might happen.
@Claude: Ibid is in fact the proper citation for a repeat author...the link however is not. I believe there are two more Easter eggs on this Spotlight.
@Valkyr: Consider that image saved!

Ah ha. If you want my advice: Chrome.

It works flawlessly managing the all-too-long Twitter thread.

@JJWeatherman: You want to know my solution?

AOL...it works fine on Whiskey media sites.

@ZombiePie: I've never run into that problem before.  But then again, I don't think I've ever linked to any where near that many things.  It's no biggie; just consider my post an addendum. :)

Say what? AOL, as in the internet service provider? What does that have to do with anything?

Those shirts are the best.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa SPOTLIGHT!

Posted by ZombiePie
@JJWeatherman: I still use the AOL portal. I also use their browser AOL Explorer over Mozilla and Chrome.

I love the idea of making "I'm a wizard..." shirts. I would totally buy one. And by "buy" I mean sneak one of them off the pile before we have our vendor ship them out. DON'T TELL ANYONE THAT'S WHAT I DO.

Yeah, I use Chrome for my link-heavy posts. Haven't had a problem yet. Firefox always wanted to fight.

I'm SO glad I'm not the only one who thought of everybody's favorite shop on the citadel when they kept saying "I'm a wizard."

Thank you for doing this every week, ZombiePie. You do an excellent job every time. And thank you for completely ignoring the excessive number of music-related posts spurred by the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

I can't stop laughing with that Magicka tee. I can even hear the voices from the game reading that. Awesome.

Posted by MarkWahlberg

What? My wizard image wasn't featured? I AM OFFENDED.

Actually, seeing how much it got overdone so quickly, I feel a little less excited about it. And as awesome as an actual shirt would be, I feel weird wearing clothes with swear words on them. Oh well.

Posted by Mento

I would also accept a Magicka tee that went "I'm a wizard, and that looks bork bork bork".

Thanks for the blog inclusion, ZP (and also for putting me first for whatever reason).

SHIT!  THEY FOUND MY PORN STASH!

Also, thanks to those who nominated my blogs for the Spotlight.  I've been enjoying writing them.  I didn't get around to doing my next installment this week, as my copy of Dead Space: Martyr came in this past week.  I'm going to be digging into that over the weekend, and then I'll be writing up Pt. 3 of Digging Into Dead Space next week.  = D

I too would enjoy that first Wizard shirt. Great stuff ZP.

I know that I'm really late responding to this, but that's crazy! Use Chrome! Or Firefox! Even IE! I'll stop bossing you around now.  =P

Btw, I have a new blog series that could use a touch of Zombie-magic:  http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/jjweatherman/cloudy-with-a-chance-of-gaming-2132011/30-77548/

Edit:
Everyone's hoppin' on the blog train! natetodamax was inspired by potentially infinite amounts of people to start his own.

I thought this was pretty cool. It's a big list of music for one, but it also gives some insight into who we all are.
