This is the Worst(Best) Birthday Ever

This is what my video game birthday present was:

Uh WHAT THE FUCK?!

Yup that's right...my parents SOMEHOW randomly decided to buy me Monster Hunter for the Wii as my birthday gift.

I want to give a little insight in why this is one of the greatest unintentionally hilarious gifts ever. When I asked my mother why she bought this her exact words were "I hear you like anime, so we got you this Japanese video game." That and when she inquired which video games I may want as a gift I said Bioshock Infinite was a solid game that I'd like to play.

Now I didn't DEMAND Bioshock, but I still have no idea how my parents got to Monster Hunter based on my enjoyment of anime alone. However when I opened the package that ominously looked like a video game box and found it to be Monster Hunter...I broke down in laughter.

It was PERFECT! At no point did I let on that I wanted to play Monster Hunter, and at no point have I ever wanted to...I mean Jesus. I don't know how or why this happening to me...but it's magical. I cannot believe any of this is happening to me.

So I guess I have to play Monster Hunter, eh?

This is very clearly a sign.

Also be very glad your mother didn't equate your supposed like of anime to something more along the lines of...say....a Hyperdimension Neptunia game.

I loved Monster Hunter Tri. It's a bit of a mess at first as you're getting used to the controls, but I think you'll enjoy it. Happy birthday!

Is this the same thing as the one I have for 3DS? If so, your parents are the best!

I don't think I've ever received a game I didn't ask for as a gift, and the last game I received as a gift was Halo: CE.

I would love to see what my mam would come up with if I asked her to get me a game.

Now it's just the worst.

@video_game_king: Why do you get away with pointless spam? I will never get it.

This is the best.

It doesn't beat the time my parents bought me The Price is Right game on the Wii for Christmas a few years back. Consider yourself lucky.

Oh, come on. Your parents didn't get you Dick Tracy on the NES. And you want to talk about bad luck?

More or less. The 3DS version is an expanded port of the original Wii game. More weapons and monsters, but the same core game.

@canteu: well said :-p

all the same it seems like your parents meant well, hopefully you get some fun out of that game, unless I am mistaken I think the online play got shut down, so your mileage may vary concerning the playability you get out of Tri

I see your Dick Tracy and raise you one The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants.

The only way it would have been better is if you didn't have a Wii. Or if they got you another totally random Japanese game like Catherine.

I think you should give it a try, though. Monster Hunter isn't that bad, especially if you play with people that are willing to teach you.

I was confused when you messaged me on steam with this announcement, but now I see the extent of the shock you are in. Truly this is the best birthday gift in the world.

So, I got a Wii-u. Am I better spending £8 on tri and playing it through the emulator or just spending the £30 and getting Ultimate?

Posted by Steadying

I really should play that copy of this I got for the Wii U a while back more. I dunno, I want it to be an RPG, and it kinda is, but it's not. It just really bothers me. For some reason, though, I still love playing it.

Happy birthday!

I played a bit of that game. It's all right, but the eventual grind kind of wore me out and I'm the kind of person that can tolerate a fair amount of grinding.

Get Ultimate. It has more content and a superior online experience.

@wampa1: Ultimate I guess. It has more stuffs. I noticed some annoying frame rate issues that I didn't notice on the Wii version, though.

Unfortunately if you did get Tri then the servers on the Wii should be down if I'm correct. But dude, it's a deep dark hole if you get into it.

I mentioned I was into video games as a kid to my relatives once. I got three Mahjong compilation box sets, all different, two Solitaire games, and three random game bundles on a disc that are worse than any flash game over 6 years.

You know what? I dont know how to play Mahjong or Solitair even after this.

With such experiences and I am usually somewhat up to date on games. I never ask people who arnt my game loving friends, to buy me a game.

So yeah Zombie Pie lucked out on getting a competent game weather he will love it or not.

One time my friend got me an anime body pillow as a joke... but then it was the most comfortable pillow I ever had. I bought a pillow case for it but I'm always paranoid someones going to look inside.

Wait, aren't body pillows just the pillow covers with anime characters? Is there something special about the pillow inside it? What did you do with the original cover for the pillow?

Mine has her on what appears to be a thin layer of cloth sewn onto the pillow. There's no flap or anything that I saw. At least I hope there's not, because I'd feel incredibly stupid if I went a year without knowing that. I might be able to cut it off but I'd rather not risk ruining it. I always thought it was kind of a weird design too, idk how someone would wash it without sticking the whole pillow in their machine, unless they were using a case like me.

From how I understand it, the cloth is removable; though, most people do hand wash for cleaning.

What character was it? And what material would you say makes it so comfortable? :)

Hmm. I might have to examine it closer. I don't recognize the character. It's a bookish looking anime girl whose leaning forward suggestively. Clearly evidence that my friend doesn't know me well enough! Otherwise it would have been a tsundere who glares at me critically as I sleep. Also I'm not sure what the material inside is, but its really firm and doesn't get lumped up too much which is a problem I've had with longer pillows.

Interesting. So something more like this perhaps?

Ouch, they got you the Wii one? Considering the Wi-Fi functionality was shut off a few months after Ultimate on Wii U came out, that's not exactly the best version. Still, you should have a good time solo, provided of course you have a Classic Controller/Classic Controller Pro.

Posted by MormonWarrior

I'm totally gonna pick up MH3 Ultimate for the Wii U once Christmas rolls around. I mean, I suggested it to my mom along with Pikmin 3 and Wind Waker HD (only getting one and I already bought a copy of SM3DW to play). Hilarious how they accidentally picked up a random cool game for you though. It's as if they just randomly bought Dark Souls or something with only the vaguest idea of what you wanted.
