I knew it would happen eventually

This marks the day that I first decided I wanted to buy a game mainly for PS3 trophies. Wipeout HD is coming out soon and I now have a compelling argument to buy it even though I am not really into Wipeout games. I can never grasp the steering and controls in Wipeout games. Every time I play one, I think maybe I'll like it. But then it always seems like I either can't turn tight enough and hit the wall on the outside, or I use the shoulder button to turn tight and hit the wall on the inside! It has frustrated me a lot. Also, there are only 8 tracks in the new game and they are all recycled from Pulse and Pure on the PSP.

However, there are some very good reasons to get this addition to the franchise. First,

Success!

So I was sitting on the in-laws’ couch this weekend, showing my little sister-in-law’s friend Patapon.  First, I was just doing a hunting mission here, fighting the dinosaur-lookin boss there.  But then he asked me to show him the level with the castle that I just could not beat.  Well, by some weird awesomeness, I beat the level!  Surprisingly easily too.  I’m not really sure what I was doing differently, but maybe the amount of grinding I had randomly done every once in a while was enough to do it.  Maybe my technique was a little different this time.  Its been a while so I can’t really say if I played it differently than I did before.

The point is, this got me so excited that I started playing it again.  As I said before, I really really enjoy this game but had reached a stalemate.  Now that I can start moving forward again, I am excited to play it again.

Also, I started playing Jeanne D’Arc.  This game is awesome.  I haven’t played a fun strategy RPG in a while but now I have three that I need to play (Jeanne D’Arc, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, and Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, in that order).  My mind (and my computer specs) can’t really keep up with too many real-time stategy games these days, but I can still enjoy a good SRPG.  Really liking Jeanne D’Arc so far, my favorite SRPG since Vandal Hearts on PSOne!  I didn’t get into Final Fantasy Tactics Advance because I didn’t dig the kid-like story and how it was such a departure from the original PSOne game.  But since War of the Lions is a redo of the original, I should like it much more.

I decided to hold off on Siren: Blood Curse because I hadn’t played it in quite a while and I still haven’t even bought the last four episodes.  With money being as tight as it is right now, the game didn’t hook me enough to make the $15 purchase yet.  Once I can buy the last few episodes I’ll go back to it.  Also, I stopped playing Professor Layton because this was also a game that I hadn’t touched in some time.  I really like it but the gameplay is such that I kind of need to be in the mood to do some puzzles to play it.  It’s probably a game that I will pick up here and there every once in a while when I feel like being smart.  The story is a bit too much of a slow burn to keep me plowing through the puzzles unless I’m in the mood.

Really enjoying The Simpsons Game!  As a game itself, its not much different than the old Simpsons arcade game of the 90s.  That’s not really a BAD thing, that game was awesome, but the gameplay is a bit shallow compared to most games these days.  Where this game shines is in the presentation.  It really looks like you’re controlling an episode of the show.  Also, I’m not very far yet, but the characters, voice acting, humor, and all the nuances of Springfield are absolutely true to the source material.  The voices are the same cast members that do the TV show and the brilliant satire that permeates the cartoon are focused on the video game industry instead of the world around us.  The developers have clearly done their homework on the subject matter, as the video game “Cliches” you discover and subtle nods to specific games are all accurate and extremely funny.  Non-gamers can still enjoy the game but will not get near as much out of it as someone who will recognize the Grand Theft Scratchy and King of All Cosmos references.  This is The Simpsons for gamer dorks.  Very rewarding.

Two BIG accomplishments!

I am pretty proud of myself for the progress I have been able to make. First off, I just completed Lego Indiana Jones. Short and easy, but a very cool and fun game. I liked it just as much as Lego Star Wars.

The first big accomplishment was finally finishing Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core a few nights ago. I had stepped away from it for a long time thanks to GTA4, Burnout, and a couple other games, but I was extremely satisfied with the game and ending. Simply awesome. I didn’t expect the ending to have as much of an effect on me as it did. Anybody who has played through the original FF7 should know how the story ends so I was expecting it, but the way it was presented with the gameplay, music, and of course, the FMV sequences was just beautiful. Very powerful. I am glad I returned to it. The gameplay left a bit much to be desired (too much button mashing) and the DMW was weird, but once you got used to it and accepted it, the game was a lot of fun. I can appreciate the innovation and it was totally worth putting up with the button mashing to have the wonderful experience of returning to Midgar and all its characters.

My other huge accomplishment was finishing Metal Gear Solid 4. Like GTA, I had never got more than a few hours into the previous MGS games and had never even touched MGS3 (or the NES and PSP chapters for that matter). However, due to the almost legendary status of the series, characters, and story, I had a base knowledge that, coupled with a perusing of the MGS Database that is available on PSN, provided me with enough of a background to make me feel ready to enjoy the game fully. While there can be some gripes about this being more of an interactive movie than a game (the last act in particular has you watching more than playing it seemed to me), I thought it was simply outstanding presentation. This would be a much bigger complaint if the characters and story were not so interesting. I was impressed every step of the way with the gameplay, story, presentation, and graphics. A game like MGS really forces you to play differently than most other games. I won’t go into spoiler territory and discuss everything that was so awesome about the game, but I will say that I just listened to the

Not selling, but......

Well, I'm definately not selling it, but I can honestly say that I haven't even turned it on since I beat Mario Galaxy.  My hope right now is for third party titles and Virtual Console.  So far I have seen literally NOTHING that excites me about the Wii through the end of the year and well into '09.  I am hella disappointed to say it, but I think my Wii will be dormant for quite a while.

Oh well, I haven't beaten Super Paper Mario or Metroid Prime 3 yet, so they will have to hold me over on the Wii for the next year or so.  sigh.....

Status update

As I predicted and expected, I'm over a week into my break and hopelessly behind.  Its ok though, I've got some good gaming in.  I've actually been able to stay away from Burnout Paradise enough to finish Uncharted on Crushing difficulty for my first Platinum Trophy (whooo!), get all the way to the last boss in Bionic Commando Rearmed (can't figure out how to beat the guy though), and beat Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty.

Now I am playing Metal Gear Solid 4 again and I have started Lego Indiana Jones.  I've also started playing Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core again and am very close to beating it I think.  I kind of fell away from that game because so many good things came out to tear me away from it.  I'm committed now!

What I need to play is Siren Blood Curse.  If the first few chapters are any indication, the rest of the game isn't too long so I should be able to beat it relatively quickly.

I think I'm in love!

They picked a new girl to be Lara Croft.  She's a total babe, and she's a gymnist so she can pull of all the moves from the games!  I've decided that since my wife gets a fantasy freebie then I do too.  Found!

I would like to see...

The ability to alphabetize your lists.  I really like the idea of lists, but they need to be able to be organized or sorted somehow instead of just randomly there.

Absolutely!

I just got my platinum trophy in Uncharted and got most of the trophies in Super Stardust HD.  If any of my other games get patched for trophies I'll definately play them again.  Gotta love being rewarded and being able to brag about your gaming accomplishments!
