Games I've bought because of Quick Look videos

I've been a gamer for a long time. I've learned over the years to take a measured approach to which games I drop my hard earned money on. And with the rise of the internet, we've gained an unprecedented ability to research our purchases before taking the plunge.

Why I love this site above all other game related sites though, is the Quick Look videos. They offer a wholely unique perspective that no review can really deliver. The game in action, the features or failure all right there on display.

Since I found Giant Bomb and became a regular visitor to this site, there have been many occasions where a Quick Look has sold me on a game that I wasn't even considering. A couple I had even decided not to buy, but the QL showed me something I hadn't seen anywhere else. This is a list of the game purchases I've made that were directly related to a Giant Bomb Quick Look:

List items

  • The QL for this game was the one that convinced me to spend my money not only on Dead Island, but on a Giant Bomb subscription. For this one, the Active Melee system was the key. Techland hadn't so much as mentioned it in their ad campaign for the game and it's the main reason the game was as fun as it ended up being. So thanks for Brad taking the time to show me what the developers did not.

  • This one isn't out for another month yet at the time of writing. And technically, the video that did it wasn't a true "Quick Look", but a video titled "What it is: Kingdoms of Amalur". But it was 20+ minutes of Brad and Vinny showing me that this one has some meat on it's bones. I was ready to write this one off based solely on the fact that Todd McFarlane was involved in it's developement and I can't stand that guy. But once again, GB saves the day and now I have a pre-order for a game I've very much looking forward to playing.

  • This was a game I'd seen on Steam a few times. Curiosity and the ads though, were not enough to make me take the plunge. But a few minutes into the games Quick Look and I was opening Steam so I could add it to my library of games.

  • Sanctum is a game I probably would have bought if I'd even heard of it. But I hadn't. I'd never even seen it pop up on Steam. I love Tower Defense and I typically enjoy FPS games and I loved Monday Night Combat so the mash-up of the two is a formula I've enjoyed in the past. So Sanctum, once I saw the QL, was a no-brainer. I even bought a 4-pack and sent 3 copies to friends so I could seed some multiplayer for later.

  • I've never liked an MMO. I played WoW, I played City of Heroes and City of Villains. The only MMO that I kind of liked was Guild Wars but even it only kept me locked in for a couple of weeks. All the others I was ready to quit playing by lvl 10. Now for MMO fans, I'm not knocking these games, they just aren't that appealing to me. I'd been following TOR for a while considering taking one last go at playing an MMO and enjoying it. But I ultimately decided that I was going to pass. Until of course, I saw Jeff's QL video. That convinced me to give it a whirl and I've been playing it almost daily ever since.

  • Here's a weird one. I haven't actually bought the video game version of AtA. But hearing the gang talk about the card game on which this is based made me want to pick it up. So I did. And it's awesome.

I may still grab the video game version at some point too, who knows? Either way, I'm still counting this one as a sale directly linked to a QL video.

  • I'd seen this game on PSN a dozen times but never picked it up. It just looked too similar to the Xbox Arcade game TRIALS HD. Now I loved TRIALS HD, but since I'd already played it to death I didn't think I needed another game that was so similar. And then I watched the QL and saw that the 2 games are almost nothing alike. With the small exception being that both take place with your player being on a motorcycle, the similarities are virtually nonexistant. Ended up buying this one twice actually. Once on the PSN when it was exclusive there, then again on the XBLA a few weeks ago to try out "The Lab". And truly, I don't regret it even a little. This is a great title and I hope the devs make more of these games.

  • Yeah, I know. Everyone and their dog was barking mad for this game long before it ever came out. But I don't like games that force me to be online to play the single player. I was against this as a concept and still am. But with all the video coverage this game received from Brad, it eventually wore down my resolve. By the time the Diablo III TNT came around, I was sold. And of course the game itself is amazing. Of course that was never really in question. Either way, This is another one I count as a sale Giant Bomb should get a commission from.
