The sequels I'd like to see be made:

For a number of reasons, the video game industry lends itself to serial style storytelling. Perhaps it's the audience, perhaps it's the nature of the interactive portions being more important to the experience, or maybe it's just because we like to stick with things we know that we like. But whatever the reason, franchises are at the very core of our favorite hobby.

2011 had a lot of games that I really enjoyed. Some for their artistic style, others for their solid gameplay. These are the games I'd most like to see get a sequel. Some are from recent times, some are from the 16-bit days and all points in between.

List items

  • FKA: Trenched. This game had enough content and charm for 10 downloadable games. I would have bought this one as a full priced box release and not felt ripped off. I'd like to see a sequel, be it a staight follow up or if they took the concept and set it in a WW2 or later era. Whatever way it happens, I hope it happens. This one was worth the time, worth the money, one of the best games of 2011 and the template that "Arcade" titles should strive for.

  • I am and older gamer. And the 16 bit generation was a very memorable time for me and many other old school gamers. The Genesis had no shortage of great exclusives and this one was a great game. Tough, but enjoyable. I got it on a whim after seeing it on the rental shelf for months. When I finally played it my only complaints were the lack of a save system. Whether it would be a XBLA release or a full out box sequel, I'd love to step into Chakan's shoes once again.

  • OK Technically, this game has already had a sequel. The absolutely awful "Ghoul Patrol". It was boring, dismal, and it's banality was matched only by it's broken mechanics and boring gameplay. What ZAMN needs is a spritiual sequel. Something that matches the tone of the original. A reverance to cheesy old science fiction and a truly delightful take on "weaponry" were what made ZAMN so special. And that is the only thing a ZAMN follow up would need to capture.

  • Last gen the industry was lousy with Mech games. Mech games launched the very influential Xbox Live service and kept it afloat while Bungie took their sweet time making Halo 2. And then... nothing. There are almost no Mech games this gen and I hope that changes pretty soon. There has been a video circling that looks like a new Mech Warrior and that is exciting. But I'd really like to see Mech Assault itself get a console sequel too. Mech Warrior is great and I'll play that like it's a second career. But Mech Assaults simpler interface and design had it's appeal as well. And I hope to see this series revived.

  • Another one that has technically already seen one sequel and since it was based off the Everquest model, this game has a strange lineage already. But I loved this game and would love to see this style of action RPG get revived in modern times. There hasn't been many of these Snowbling engine games since this series and it's something I think there is a definate market for. Maybe when Diablo 3 drops people will start taking a gamble on this style of game again. I sure hope so.

  • OK let me say this before you start to scoff. NO ONE wants a follow up to THIS game. But I would love it if someone, anyone, could make a good game based on The Last Airbender. The cartoon, not the awful movie. The setup for a game is all right there.

  • These games were fan-babby-tastic. MLF and MLH both added some gruesome fun into the basic premise of their respective sport and the combination made for some good times. Then, out of nowhere, they stopped making them. Without the need for licences, these games could really be a fun way to play without having to use the more sim themed overtones of the current crop of sports titles across every professional athletic contest. C'mon EA, why can't you let us have a fun silly alternative to Madden?

  • This game had plenty of sequels across a few differnt platforms. Then it up and vanished. I'd definately hope they added adjustable control settings if they ever brought this one back, but as a franchise I thought it was quite entertaining. I'd love to see a modern gen version of this classic Xbox title.

  • The seminal Dreamcast party experience. This game was a blast when played with friends. Not so much fun alone though, but still an entertaining title that deserves to live on in modern times. While it did have a sequel, I'd love to see an update for this classic.

  • I know there have been other HULK games since this one and I know the team who made Ultimate Destruction has since moved on to the Prototype games. But all that aside, I loved this game and with the power of modern consoles this game could really shine. Heck, I'd be happy with a remake that basically let me do the same things as H:UD did. This was one fun game and I'd love to relive it.

  • Star Wars Battlefront was a good game. But Battlefront 2 was an amazing piece of software. Playing alone or with friends, it just never stopped being fun. And I normally don't even like these types of games. I prefer a game with story to it. But the non stop action of the Battlefront series was a Force-ton of Star Wars fun. Invading attacking ships, piloting cruisers and landing craft into enemy vessels, Jedi battles, this one had it all.

  • One of my favorite games from last gen. And one of my favorite Marvel games ever made. This was Volition at their finest. Before Saints Row, Before Red Faction: Guerilla, they gave us this hidden gem of a game. This one had so much going for it. The special execution moves were pitch perfect Punisher. They captured his disregard for the lives of criminals with each brutal display and I loved every second of it.

  • Now I know that The Sabotuer was Pandemic's swan song. A glorious last hurrah for the team who brought us Mercenaries and Battlefront 2 among others. These guys didn't always make great games. But their games always had style and substance and charm. And The Sabotuer is no different. I enjoyed this game immensely. With the story the way it was, it would be difficult to tell a direct sequel of course. But this, or even Mercenaries, could easily be carried on by one of EA's other teams. Maybe one that wouldn't ship the games full of bugs and glitches. While the Sabotuer was the one I listed, I loved quite a few of Pandemic's titles and I'm sad that they are no longer around to make new entries in these franchises. It would be nice if the spirit of these games could live on in a sequel or in a new property built by former Pandemic team members.
