Just saw the story on Rock Paper Shotgun. Tim Schafer tweeted that they'd love to do Psychonauts 2 if a studio will fund it, and Notch replied something to the effect of "Let's do it!" RPS confirmed with Notch that he is 100% serious, but obviously this is just a couple of tweets and not actual confirmation of said sequel. Hell and Damn Yes.

Minecraft creator Notch funding Psychonauts 2?
If Notch is serious (which is debatable, it's not uncommon for him to troll on twitter) I'll be somewhat worried about the direction Mojang is taking. Funding and publishing small projects from small indie developers is one thing, but funding multimillion dollar projects on a whim seems totally dumb and just doesn't make good business sense.

He's Swedish; what do you want?
I just read the story on Eurogamer ( http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-07-notch-offers-to-fund-double-fines-psychonauts-2 ), really hope that this happens!

Yeah, you guys suck. That's the problem.
*flees*
They make Psychonauts 2 happen and make that game good and they can sink like the Titanic. I will personally fund a beautiful, romanticized movie based on the events. If Notch is serious (which is debatable, it's not uncommon for him to troll on twitter) I'll be somewhat worried about the direction Mojang is taking. Given that Notch is a multimillionaire, I could totally see this happen. And when Notch is a gamer himself, I could imagine him giving Doube Fine a very long leash.
With the robust engine they're utilizing, the one that came from Brutal Legend, they'll spend a lot less time and money developing new tricks and tactics to get the game to do what they want. Hopefully, if this is the case, they can put more money towards marketing it and ironing out bugs and odd little game problems.

It's not totally on a whim. Psychonauts is a known entity that Notch is obviously a big fan of and he probably believes a sequel would work. It was also a twitter message and I'm sure the message wasn't followed by him sending Tim Schafer a blank check. If this was to actually go forward I'm pretty sure they'd have some meetings about Tim Schafers plans for the game and the amount of funding he would be looking for before any contracts were signed.
Damnit, I love Schafer so much
Tim Schafer TimOfLegendIt's always unsettling to wake up to five text messages that say, "You'd better check your Twitter."
Man, so many tweets. I assume this is all people asking for codes to Happy Action Theater and Rise of the Martian Bear?
Oh wait. Hm. This is interesting.
You know what, developers shouldn't say things like "hey we'll make a sequel to a beloved yet unsuccessful game if somebody decides to publish it" if they don't really mean it. And on the flip side, companies with the financial might to actually fund said project, shouldn't offer to publish it if they aren't serious about it. Then again, maybe both sides are totally serious. Who knows.
Just my 2 cents.
More precisely, it was "Oh wait. Hm. This is interesting."
I didn't even expect *that* much of a response. I mean, Tim and Notch both seem like very nice guys, but there is more than just those two dudes that would be involved in what really goes on. Don't forget Mojang is now a full fledged business and so is Double Fine. That they didn't have to get lawyers and everyone involved to even provide a "Oh. Hm." is surprising, to me.
Having another great game would be fantastic, but even more than that, this feels like a moment I really want to happen, because it'd make an incredible story. It would make me feel better about the gaming world. Tim Schafer deserves it. And it would be kind of amazing to see something so good for gaming come out of a situation where zero middle-men were involved.
I"m sure I'm not the only one refreshing both twitter streams automatically like every five minutes.
