So I passed up Psychonauts when it came out years back, but I saw the $2 deal on Steam (lolwut?) and figured what the hell. So I'm 2 hours into this game, and it's pretty freakin sweet. The humor and voiceovers are both hilarious, and the platforming is only mildly frustrating. I like the RPG lite system it has going with psych cards and figments, and the game has a pretty good camera as far as last-gen era platformers go. And I love the premise of going into people's minds and fighting nightmares, leads to lots of artistic creativity on the part of the developers.
I'd recommend people go back and play this game. It's fully playable on an Xbox 360 gamepad, although for some strange reason the left and right triggers don't work (bound lock-on/psychic power to left and right bumpers instead).

Psychonauts - a hidden gem?
I loved Psychonauts back on the PS2. It was one of those games that you wanted to talk about with other people, but nobody else seemed to have played it. I loved the humor, the variety of the level design, and the gameplay was overall very fun. I would pick it up from Xbox Originals, but my HDD is just ridiculously overloaded.
"Gem? Absolutely. Hidden? Not really. Sure, the game didn't sell a lot when it first came out, but by now pretty much everyone has at least heard of it. "
This is true,
It's probably one of the most well known "critically acclaimed but commerically unsuccessful games" (is that a concept page yet?) going around.
However, it has been released on steam and xbox originals so I'm sure it's had some pretty long legs for Double Fine.
If it's like "Brutal Legend" style good, then I don't want to ever really play it. I got suckered into buying Brutal Legend and it's pretty crappy. Good thing I got it new for $29.99 or else I would be super pissed.
Ya I was late to the party on this game aswell, I think that I thought it looked like a kids game when it came out so I ignored it. But ya this game totally blew me away when I played it. Then when I heard about Brutal Legend I was super psyched (ha pun) since Tim Schafer is pretty much my favorite developer, you could imagine my dissapointment when the reviews came in. :(
Thanks, now I'm depressed.

"I think you mean Tim Schafer. Tim Burton directs movies.

Good to see that these new channels (Steam, Xbox Originals) give players who didn't play it a second chance at this game.
I thought (and still do) it's a wonderful game.
@LiquidPrince: I was also a bit disappointed with Brutal Legend, but Psychonauts is different.... In a good way.
I also got the game when it was $2 on Steam. I finished it a few weeks ago and I've got to say the game was awesome. So many different environments (Godzilla level was so much fun) and the story was a joy to play through.
The meat circus was plain frustrating. There were a few parts that could have remained challenging but refined to improve the fun factor.
So glad I played it, well worth the money being sold on GoG or Steam
I remember playing it on the ps2 back when it first came out. It was so much fun, so i bought it on steam and it brings back great memories
Nah its not a Hidden gem Its an AMAZING game but not hidden its well known Reviewers loved it but people just didn't buy the game for some reason.
It's not so much a hidden gem as much as it is a gem no one wanted to really bother.
And seriously. I get the feeling sometimes that I am one of the few people that enjoyed Brutal Legend.
I really liked psychonauts and I think it was one of the best games last gen.
The milkman and Godzilla levels were so awesome.
I too bought the game when it was on sale on Steam. Haven't finished it, though, because the meat-circus is just painful. Still, I love the dialogue and the twisted characters. Definitely one of the best platformers I've ever played. The game plays just fine with mouse+keyboard, although it took me a while to get used to. Still, very enjoyable experience without a gamepad.
