The love for Double Fine's Psychonauts remains strong, even after all these years.

Hey, remember Psychonauts? Double Fine does, as the company announced a slew of Psychonauts-related news today. Don't get too excited, though, as none of them involve a sequel or an HD update.

Instead, since getting its hands on the entirety of the Psychonauts IP, Double Fine has partnered with another studio to produce a Mac version of its quirky action platformer. The existing Steam version has also been tweaked to include cloud saves and Steam achievements.

The studio also claims to have crafted a "slightly modified" version of the not-so-beloved Meat Circus stage that closes out the game.

“We are really excited,” said the elusive double agent known as Tim Schafer in the press release, “to finally be answering fans’ requests for a more difficult Meat Circus.”

Lovely.

There's also a way to bring your love of Psychonauts on-the-go with the Psychonauts Vault Viewer, an iOS app featuring all of the game's Memory Vaults with some brand-new audio commentary.

It took long enough I guess

#3 Posted by The_Nubster (1540 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I never found the Meat Circus very difficult. I did it my second or third go.

#4 Posted by nohthink (1213 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Price please?

#5 Posted by amomjc (977 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Neat, didn't know it was released on Steam, might have to go pick that up when I get the cash seeing as I missed it when it first released and I've heard a lot of good about it.

Hell yeah - as someone who can only play computer games on a Mac, this is brilliant news.

Achievements! Now I have a small reason to play through it all again. Downloaded the iOS app, can't wait to see what's up with that.

#8 Posted by jon_e (29 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

That's pretty cool. My wife loves the game and I liked watching her play it. She could never finish it though. The Meat Circus was too hard.

#9 Posted by Pr1m8 (13 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

is it pathetic to think they might make a sequel type thing now?

just a little chunk like the smaller games they have been busting out

i really want more

#10 Posted by RobertOrri (964 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Woo, now I have a good reason to play my extra PC copy (originally played it on the Xbox).

#11 Posted by Ghostiet (4742 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I just hope none of the achievements is "collect every figment".

#12 Edited by MrKlorox (11079 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

The PC version is already the equivalent of an "HD update" judging by the standards set by Sony, Capcom, and Konami.

#13 Posted by jonnyboy (2901 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Meat Circus was literally the only flaw in an amazingly crafted game, not super hard but just enough repetition to be annoying. To be honest, if Double Fine was to announce an HD remake it would sell more than the original release as the fan base numbers now far exceeds the original copies sold.

I have a question Patrick, might you know why Psychonauts is no longer on the xbox live marketplace for download? It was there a couple of weeks ago but is no longer available. If you could find the answer to this that would be great because I would really like to purchase this on xbla.

Same.

I really hope this means an XBLA release like Beyond Good & Evil. They bought up the rights, brought it to the Mac, are tweaking the game, and added achievements. Hmmmm...
#16 Posted by ovrlrd (10 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Maybe I am too early jumping on this but it doesn't seem to want to download on Steam for Mac. It isn't listed in my games list (previously bought it for PC), and hitting "Play now" on the store page isn't doing anything. Also the iOS app says it isn't available at the moment. Does the world hate me or is it just too early?

#17 Posted by Rirse (210 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Meat Circus was always easy if you used the invisibility ability when dealing with the tight ropes.

#18 Posted by megalowho (826 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Achievements? In my Psychonauts? This I have to see.

The stars are aligning. You know you want to make it Double Fine, and we want to play it. Just keep that Psychonauts revival train a-rollin' for now...

#19 Posted by Lokno (368 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I played the entire game with WASD, meat circus included. Never understood the complaints.

#20 Posted by MisterMouse (3493 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

awesome, is the mac version going to appear on Steam?

I was wondering what the hell the almost 3GB patch was.

#23 Posted by MmmSkyscraper (296 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Double Fine, more like Double BOSS.

#24 Posted by JetForceGemini (153 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Proper widescreen support?

#25 Posted by BoringK (225 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

a more difficult Meat Circus

SCREW YOU, SCHAFER

*goes to see how much Psychonauts costs on Steam*

I HATE YOU TIM SCHAFER! Just kidding but that thing is worthy of breaking discs, controllers, putting holes in walls, or possibly knocking yourself out in hopes of amnesia. I never beat that god damn game even if I loved -almost- every minute of it. I watched the end on youtube because I gave up.

#27 Posted by phrosnite (3377 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Psychonauts doesn't need an HD version anyways. The game is from 2005 and it looks great on the PC.

#28 Posted by NickLott (775 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

@Pr1m8: I don't think it's pathetic. They put the time into reacquiring the publishing rights to the game and now these updates and apps tells me that Double Fine believes that the IP has a future.

#29 Posted by Landon (3963 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Tried to download the Vault Viewer app, says it's no longer available.

IIRC, except for the pre rendered cutscenes it already supports widescreen.
#31 Posted by Wiseblood (586 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Buying this game for the 3rd time now. (I'm surprised I hadn't already bought it on steam).

Hopefully they do an XBLA version then I'll buy it for a 4th time.

I completely agree. This is one of the very few 3D games that has aged very gracefully. The graphics are crisp and expressive, the humor spot-on, and the gameplay simple and fun. Psychonauts will be a classic 10 years down the road.

Too bad I already beat the game; even Steam achievements aren't quite enough to get me to reinstall it.

#33 Edited by dagas (2605 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I had this on PS2 for awhile since I had heard so much about how great it was, but didn't like it much. A former classmate of mine held it as his favorite game of all time though so some really like it.

#34 Edited by falling_fast (1972 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

cool! time to buy a third copy of this game ( ps2, xbox and now pc)

psychonauts is one of the best games I have ever played. apart from THAT Meat Circus level, in particular I assume that one sequence where you're navigating this weird tube shaped mesh fence, which it sounds like they've fixed :]

#35 Posted by JamTorkberg (6 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Yay, a-Steam-ments!

#36 Posted by Klei (1406 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Thanks to this news, I've purchased Psychonauts for the fifth time.

#37 Posted by Zippedbinders (967 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I've never understood the complaints over the Meat Circus, its honestly not that hard.

However, all this updating is fantastic news. Time to go through Psychonauts an eighth time.

Just saw this.

Made me so happy seeing this, and the fact that Pyschonauts is back in Double Fine's hands.

Oh man, last time I played this game there was one on Waterloo World I was never able to find.  Those damn things are so hard to see sometimes.
#42 Posted by l3illyl3ob (238 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

The update also includes native 360 controller support. Neat.

#43 Posted by Indiana (21 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

This new update has widescreen and Xbox 360 controller support, so it's practically an HD update.

#44 Posted by allenibrahim (360 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Time to buy Psychonauts again! Controller support and widescreen are all that I could ask for. Also, memories of the Meat Circus are now flowing back to me...god damn. I'm also kind of interested in the iPhone app. I just tried downloading it, and it said "No longer available." I'm hoping that's just a release day thing.

#45 Posted by ZombiePie (4789 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

One of my most favorite things ever was when Tim Schafer was on the Retronauts talking about the Steam version of Psychonauts. They asked him if he was still getting some sort of compensation from Steam copies of Psychonauts. He said yes but if people really wanted to support the guys and gals who developed Psychonauts gamers should "pirate the game, and then buy a t-shirt on our website."

I guess I'm buying this game again. $10 on Steam. What a steal!

#47 Posted by Crunchman (295 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Does anyone know if these PC versions include support for gamepads? Some native support for the Xbox 360 gamepad would be pretty cool.

#48 Posted by Deathpooky (1071 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Looks like I'm buying another version of Psychonauts. Well worth it.

It was off in the grassy area that surrounds the level and serves no purpose.

I wonder..I already have the PC version of Psychonauts for Steam, it would be nice if that just became Mac compatible as I only use Macs now.

Also great news on them getting the IP back! Sequals and HD remakes ahoy!
