Publishing Rights to Psychonauts Now in Double Fine's Hands

If you haven't played Psychonauts before, now's the perfect time to man up and fix that.

Double Fine has always had the right to produce sequels to Psychonauts, but whenever you purchased a copy of the original game on Xbox Live or Steam, the money went to Majesco, who published the game. That's changed, according to a tweet from Double Fine programmer Anna Kipnis.

"Double Fine is now the sole publisher of Psychonauts!! If you buy it now (on Steam, for instance), the proceeds go to us!" said Kipnis.

Maybe Double Fine can start a Kickstarter to get that Psychonauts sequel off the ground!

I wouldn't mind a Beyond Good & Evil HD style update to the game, either.

Basically, just Psychonauts anything.

Yeah.

#5 Posted by Saethir (353 posts) -

I played the demo on steam, and found the controls kind of iffy, but now seems like a good time to give it another go.

Tim Schafer now has the power. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

This can only mean good things.

#9 Posted by TJ311 (415 posts) -

Don't wait... the game is fantastic. Look past the jagged edges and experience one of the most unique worlds (made of unique worlds).

Never played Psychonauts but I've heard nothing but good things. I'd buy a upgraded version on XBLA.

#14 Posted by Gav47 (1542 posts) -

Now I really don't have a good reason not to buy this on Steam

Get it for the PC via Steam, it looks great and it would probably run on a calculator now.

Man the PC version still looks gorgeous. Such an awesome game.

#17 Posted by CrimsonJesus (69 posts) -

Now if they could improve the gameplay in the sequel, I might finish it.

I'll probably download this on XBLM this weekend.  I trust Steam gets on it right away, but are we sure MS updated the redistribution of income?  They tend to drag their feet when it comes to updating things.

Also, it bears saying, you can make it work pretty well with a gamepad. And it's already in HD. So no excuses.

well that is cool, good for them!

#25 Posted by Abendlaender (2803 posts) -

DAMN IT!
I just but it 4 months ago on Steam.
Man this seriously bums me out a bit, especially seeing how there are no other Double Fine games on PC and I don't have a console.

#26 Posted by BigChief (503 posts) -

Man, I wish I had held off on buying Psychonauts till now. Double Fine deserves to make some money off the game, it's darn good.

#27 Posted by solarisdeschain (99 posts) -

Psychonauts is a near perfect game (the cobweb duster is stupidly overpriced), and I'm glad to see Double Fine get what they deserve for their impressive work.

#28 Posted by MetalGearSunny (6992 posts) -

This makes me want to buy it second time. I love Psychonauts.

#29 Posted by hwarang (142 posts) -
@BigChief: Except the load times. I couldn't finish it for that reason. Too much waitin'
#30 Posted by Moonshadow101 (565 posts) -

Don't know if this means anything practical, but a sequel would still be really awesome.

Never played it.

#33 Posted by Doctorchimp (4076 posts) -

More psychonauts!!!

But if and only if Tim Schaefer shows us his mad programming skills and codes the game by himself.

#34 Posted by Jayzz (592 posts) -

psychonauts gets so much hype, but I just couldnt get into it... Anyone want to give me a reason to give it a 2nd go?

#35 Posted by dungbootle (2457 posts) -

I am pleased.

It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) Sun-Shiny day

#37 Posted by CharlesAlanRatliff (5424 posts) -

Awesome news for Double Fine. Hopefully we get some kind of Psychonauts stuff in the future.

#38 Posted by Springfart (320 posts) -

damn, now im gonna have to play it again

#39 Posted by FoxMulder (1690 posts) -

I love that game to death.  They really created a fun open world platformer.  It was I was expecting more of from Brutal Legend. I hope their next proper disc release is Psychonauts 2, or something similar.

#40 Posted by golguin (3919 posts) -

I remember this game being one of the first games I had played that was legitimately funny.

Psychonauts HD and sequel. Make it happen Double Fine.

#42 Posted by Mumrik (1078 posts) -

I had the same issue with Psychonauts than I had with Brütal Legend: The gameplay itself is kind of bland and uninteresting. Everything around it is great and different from the usual shit, but I need more satisfying gameplay.

#43 Posted by SamFo (1528 posts) -

I would be interested to know if they had any reason for doing this other than just the royalties. I'd think that most people who are going to play psychonauts probably have by now!

#44 Posted by skadave (199 posts) -

I should give this game another try. I played the PS2 port many years ago and i was not impressed. . . perhaps that version was not good.

#45 Posted by AlisterCat (5560 posts) -

Shame that I already bought it. Might gift it to a few friends on steam though.

#46 Posted by Lokno (386 posts) -

Yay! Crack out your Lua scripting!

#47 Posted by DeeGee (2124 posts) -

Brilliant game despite the fact I can never seem to finish it. Difficulty curve on that game is fucked, but it's great. Not sure how much money Double Fine will get from it though, it can't be selling for much, I mean, I got it for £1 in a Steam sale

#48 Posted by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

Hey that's awesome! I really enjoyed Psychonauts and have been wanting a current-gen sequel.

#49 Posted by autobzooty (97 posts) -

Had a little bit of a freakout when I saw Psychonauts on the front page.

:(

#50 Posted by Hexogen (766 posts) -

I bought this game as an Xbox Original, and despite the fact that I never finished it, I really liked what I played. I may go back to it if I run out of games to play this summer.
