Nagagustu o Haita Neko, or Puss in Boots (the title literally translates to "Cat Who Wore Cavalier Boots"), is a side-scrolling platformer based on a series of Japanese animated movies. The player guides an anthropomorphic cat named Pero on his quest to travel across the world and return back to London within eighty days, in a journey reminiscent of Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days. Pero must pass through seven levels consisting of basic platforming with several freely chosen weapons, side scrolling vehicle levels, and boss fights.

Puss N Boots: Pero's Great Adventure originally came out on the Famicom only in Japan as Nagagutsu o Haita Neko: Sekai Isshuu 80 Nichi Dai Bouken ("Puss in Boots: An Adventure Around the World in 80 Days", based on the third animated movie featuring the character) in 1986, but was heavily updated four years later to become Puss N Boots: Pero's Great Adventure. One of the new features added to the US version includes being able to select between three different weapons, and the levels were rearranged.

Pero is the mascot of Toei animation in Japan. The name Pero itself is a Japanese onomatopoeia for a licking sound. It's also thought to be an homage to Charles Perrault, the author of the original Puss in Boots novel.
