Giantbomb Quake 2 server.

#1 Edited by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

I know this should probably be in the Quake forum but there isn't as many readers there. I know alot of people missed it but Ryan is running a Quake 2 ctf server and would like people to play on it. Who knows maybe you'll be able to play against him?
All you need is base Quake 2 patched up to 3.20 and the ip is ...

racistpuddin.dyndns.tv
pull up the console and type
"connect racistpuddin.dyndns.tv"  without quotes

For all the ctf maps
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake2/ctf/q2ctf150.zip
Just extract it to your quake2/ctf folder and you should be good to go

Other real useful quick downloads have helped a ton for how the mouse responds.

a patch 3.21.. Unoffical but it works with 3.2 servers
     http://www.markshan.com/thesinraven/quake_II_v.3.21.htm

and a simple quick engine mod.. also compatible
     http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/r1q2/download/r1q2-websetup.exe

Once all that is installed run r1q2.. join the server and put in these console commands
 m_directinput 1
 m_filter 0
cl_maxfps 100 (you wont see a difference but you will feel it in the aiming precision)
gl_swapinterval 1 (controls vsync it may help some people)

if you dont like typing in all of that every time this is easy to use

Just so you know if you post something in any forum it becomes a recent topic and pretty much everyone will see it.

#3 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

Ahhh good to know thanks :P
Also someone posted a helpful topic in the Quake 2 forums. Quake 2 multiplayer for free? Can anyone confirm if this works?

It's worth noting that Quake 2 isn't freeware and is still being sold on Steam. Them distributing Quake 2 (even it's multiplayer components alone) may well be illegal. I didn't check the link so if it's authorized by Id then cool.

#5 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

True but that has been around for a few years it looks like.  Either way use it at your own risk.

big useful edit for those who want to play

It is in fact illegal. I skimmed through the comments there and apparently they applied an official patch to the demo which "unlocked" it or some-such. Naturally that's not covered by the original license at all, never mind the included content with its own various copyrights (e. g. sound effects). So downloading that thing could be risky.
#8 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

Yeah its definitely at your own risk.. the files they used overall are 100% legal... and ID hasnt had them remove it and its been 2 years.. it sounds sort of safe

#9 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

so anyone else going to join in? want an insane ctf match going down here

#10 Posted by Crocio (542 posts) -

I will absolutely join in; we need more GB community servers ongoing!

#11 Posted by Goblix (24 posts) -

Well 3 of us are playing right now! C'mon in!

Only 3? We need to organize a regular GB quake event.
#13 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

well this post has been up since this morning :P

#14 Posted by empfeix (774 posts) -

ty for the helpful post - got it running!

#15 Posted by Goblix (24 posts) -

We could really use some more players, 3-4 just isn't enough.

#16 Posted by Duckchow (47 posts) -

Oh, dang. If I can find my copy and some free time, I'll definitely hop on there.

#17 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

i posted a solution towards the top.. but its sketchy on how legal it is... use at your own risk

#18 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

get your rocket launchers

#19 Posted by Goblix (24 posts) -

Get your rocket launchers RIGHT NOW and get in here!

#20 Edited by Vager (1654 posts) -

I'll join in once i get all these downloads done.

Maps download speed is god damn slow.

#21 Posted by groin (847 posts) -

Ah, yes. Power amp + quad damage is so overpowered.

#22 Posted by Goblix (24 posts) -

Fun couple of matches we played! I look forward to getting some more games going but we really need some more players since most of these maps are too big!

Oh and I'm thinking we need Friday Night Quake 2 or something, a little bit of organization :P

#23 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

yeah we need to set a time and ryan should keep the server up :D

#24 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

Friday Night Frag Fest :O

#25 Posted by groin (847 posts) -

I think there should be a deathmatch server too :)

#26 Posted by Goblix (24 posts) -

I think it should alternate between CTF and DM :P

Provided that's possible.

#27 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

and tribes 2

#28 Posted by Ryan (1263 posts) -

I've gone ahead and switched the server over to Lithium DM. Not enough regular traffic to justify CTF, at least at the moment.

YES.. map downloads are slow though.

#30 Posted by Duckchow (47 posts) -
Had a fun time last night, but even when we had 6 in there CTF was still a bit empty. I'm pumped to play some DM.

Yeah, I noticed....dirty hacker...*ahem* Uh....I mean...what?

Just wait until I get my rail gun skillz back. :P
#31 Posted by Shuborno (938 posts) -

I feel like such a n00b playing that game.  I haven't played it in quite some time, and my TF2 skills really aren't transferring (other than rocket jumping).

Still having is a good time though.

#32 Posted by groin (847 posts) -

tested|norm was just on there. Everyone left though :(

#33 Posted by Vager (1654 posts) -

All this Quake 2 is just making me want to play 1 or 3.

#34 Posted by Goblix (24 posts) -

Thanks for the game mode change Ryan, CTF was just far too empty.

#35 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -
@Ryan:  Thanks that should make it alot more fun :P. I'll still try to get some more people to join it.
#36 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

although its still a bit too early for me for this type of game.. ill go mess around with tribes 2

#37 Posted by Goblix (24 posts) -

Assuming we get someone to host a Tribes 2 server :P

#38 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

i can try fiddling with it but i dont like leaving my computer on overnight with all these cats :P

#39 Posted by groin (847 posts) -

Ryan needs to lower(set?) the fraglimit and   DF_WEAPONS_STAY to the dmflags so that the weapons do not disappear when picked up.

#40 Posted by Crocio (542 posts) -

Bumping this. Anyone up for a weekly 1998 open source games night?

#41 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

what games would those be? :P

#42 Posted by Sticky_Pennies (2019 posts) -

I've got my CD for Quake 2 lying around. How does it get along with Windows 7 64-bit?

#43 Posted by TwoLines (2811 posts) -

One of those Dl's has a trojan. At least that's what my AV program tells me. But he's oversensitive, so.. yeah.

I shall play Quake 2! Coincidentally, I have a copy laying around my desk.

Tribes(one), Quake(1 or 3), Freespace based mods.
Hell, we could throw in more recent freeware games as well just to draw in more attention/participants.
#45 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -
@Crocio:  Tribes 1 master server is down and i don't think they've emulated it yet like they have for tribes 2. =/
#46 Posted by bellmont42 (321 posts) -

I wouldn't take anything this bellmont guy says as truth.
