Quake Live is a 'free-to-play' web browser-based FPS from id Software. It is based on the popular game Quake III Arena, and focuses solely on online multiplayer.
Sure, why not? As already stated, it's free. Plus, it has a decent match making service that recommends servers for you based on your skill level. There were some problems with lag spikes on a few of the servers in the early days, but that seems to be fixed now.
I've been playing since they added Mac compatibility, and it is very easy to get into. It doesn't thrust you into a bunch of insanely good Quake players, but rather it does a great job at finding the right skill level for you.
It has to determine your skill level before it can match you to similar players. This can be done either by playing AIs or just going straight into multiplayer games. The AI behavior is interesting but I find myself going straight into the multiplayer, even if it does mean getting destroyed while it tries to estimate your skill level. Then as you get better I imagine it will put you against stronger players so that the game has a sense of progression like Halo. Quake Live is pretty much the only PC game I play and I think its a lot of fun.
