22 GIG install on the 360?????
So no way it's 2 discs.
7GB wais the max install size for an Xbox 360 disc until an update expanded the space to 8GB.

... 9GB x 2 = 18GBHow many discs is it going to use? I remember hearing how they wanted 3 discs for xbox but the costs were too high and restricting the game into 2 discs would decrease the quality of the game.
Thread title = 22GB intall
Carmack went over this kinda on the Quakecon keynote. He didn't say why, but did allude to some reason why they couldn't do a "partial" install for Rage on 360, so it has to fully install (so 22GB is probably close to the PC install size aswell) and on PS3 he said something around 10GB I think.

@Dany: Sounds like 3 disc to me. 6.5 is the biggest install I've ever come across. 6.5x3 = 19.5 gigs So no way it's 2 discs.
That is good news.
Microsoft needs to implement that when you install games that have multiple discs is to use the first disc to play the entire game.
I'm not sure how it is on PS3, because I remember that MGS4 used all 50 of the gigabytes, and it's install was around 6 gigs. But what do I know?

It isn't a data cache like PS3, the "installs" just image the disc (or discs) to the HDD. Even the Forza 3 extras install just imaged the second disc. My guess it will be like previous multi disc games - you can delete and install each disc as you go - seeing as they have to make provision for ppl not installing there cannot be too much backtracking of areas.
Well DVD has had a hell of a run for spanning 2 consoles. Its still kicking pretty well too. I wonder what the break down for data is. Id accept this game as actually needing 22Gigs, vs MGS4 which I think was mostly uncompressed audio, and well everything to hype blu ray as necessary,
They confirmed awhile ago that it would be 3 discs on 360. I'm not sure how much quality would be decreased. How many discs is it going to use? I've never even heard of the game, but considering the install size, the name sounds appropriate enough.
The outrageousness of an install that big only makes me more anxious to see and play Rage. Dead Space 2 needed two disks to preserve it's creative integrity, as I heard that explained. Carmack kept mentioning 6 years of development in that keynote, so that must mean a lot of content, and a lot they were unwilling to cut, and/or the large disk/HDD space needed for these 'megatextures'. Moving paintings indeed.

Wonder how much it'll be on the PC
who cares, I still have 1.3 TB free on my HD .... *PC fanboymode: off*
Wait a second, if it's 3 discs... how can it be 22 gig?
I thought the max size for an Xbox disc was 6.8 gig? Which means it can't be more than 20.4 gig in total. Unless you download that extra 2.
Right?
Didn't MS do something to make the disc size bigger or something, thats what that Dashboard beta was earlier this year.Wait a second, if it's 3 discs... how can it be 22 gig?

@Creamypies:Well their was that thing about them changing the format of the xbox discs to allow 1 more gig of data on to them. I dunno if that 1gb thing is even real but they sent halo discs to try out the new format...
Ahh yes, I forgot about that. Well if they're using this new format then I guess it all adds up.
It's the same size as a full LA Noire install (which didn't bother me in the slightest).
As for Rage's discs, 2 for the SP, 1 for the MP.

And on PS3, 1 blu ray. Guess I'll be getting Rage on PS3.
"It has to load everything from the DVD or the Blu-ray – even worse in terms of total latency time – you listen to that Blu-ray churning around as it's pulling everything in."
Carmack himself said that the fully installed 360 version runs far better than the PS3 version will with its install, because of the blu-ray read speed being so darned slow. Frankly, if you want to play the game well, get upgrade your PC.
This is exactly why we'll be seeing new consoles from Microsoft and Sony next year.

I plan to get the floppy disc edition for no other reason than the freaking huge box it comes in.
That would be one huge box, 15,715 floppies. You would need a truck to get it home.
I have a 20 gig hard drive on 360, and I don't have thousands of dollars to buy a PC, so @Redbullet685 said:@Redbullet685 said:

This is wrong. Forza 3 uses a custom install process. You can choose what to install from disc 2 and you never have to insert it again, if you choose to install everything. This sounds to be the same case with Rage, so there is more likely then not a single "play" disc if you choose to install.
Technology is moving forward, not all developers wanna restrict their games with 5+ year old tech just to suit the consoles and be on 1-2 disks..
So it only makes sense that a triple A 2011 game requires 3 disks for a 2005 machine
So yes you need to swap discs - but you can install one at a time if space is limited.
[QUOTE]@H_Rotorvator we just recently found out that you can install one disk at a time on the 360, you don't need to install all three.

@solidejake said:Uncompressed audio was the big one. If they compressed the audio and lowered the bitrate on the cutscenes it would likely fit on a couple of DVDs.I'm not sure how it is on PS3, because I remember that MGS4 used all 50 of the gigabytes, and it's install was around 6 gigs. But what do I know? The only reason MGS4 took up a whole blueray is because there was 30 hours of voice acting in like 12 languages
