I hope they do find jobs at other places.

On the other hand, id hasn't made quality games that made them a big name in gaming recently so it kinda makes sense.

    Sad but not entirely surprising.

That's a dick but it's not surprising after hearing John Carmack talk before launch numerous times in big words about the technical aspects without a single word about the gameplay and let's not forget the fact that it took five fricking years for them to make it.

Always a bummer, but still it's kind of to be expected considering how many years of development were riding on Rage, and how segmented its quality was.

It's a shame, but hopefully they land on their feet with other studios and their talent will be utilized under better creative direction in their future endeavors.

I bet John Carmack isn't going anywhere tho.

"Hey John, we've been talking, and we just don't think this mega-texturing thing is going to work out, so we're going to have to let you go. Good luck with your rockets tho." <hands John Carmack box>

So are they not sacking actual long time employees but just the typical short term contractors they bring on to finish projects?

Yeah, maybe just trimming the fat. It's always hard to tell with these official "layoff" statements development houses tend to release. id Software obviously isn't going anywhere, but I don't recall id or Bethesda ever needing to release a public statement that either company was letting people go, even after a games shipped.

Plus, there was talk by Carmack of extensive post-launch DLC plans, and from what I can tell, none of that panned out at all. To my knowledge, nothing specific was ever announced after they said that.

@Krakn3Dfx: Seems weird that they would sack people and then at the same time say they are hiring people. I remember the same thing happening with Bungie after Reach launched where the sacked all the contracters but where still hiring for jobs and everyone made all sorts of crazy theories but everything went on the same regardless.
