'' id Software's John Carmack is mindful of the anger over Modern Warfare 2 dropping dedicated server support. That's why he's glad Infinity Ward is going first, because he plans to do the same thing with Rage.

"It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers," he said, according to Variety. But he's glad "we won't have to be a pioneer on that. We'll see how it works out for everyone else."

News that Infinity Ward was dropping dedicated server support in favor of everyone playing online through its new matchmaking service IWNet touched, off, predictably, a petition-fueled backlash from a PC community that had long used dedicated servers to play Call of Duty games. Carmack, Variety said, indicated the felt the servers are a relic of PC gaming's early days.''

Exactly what I thought. PC gamers must be really hurting from this. It just doesn't seem like something John Carmack would do.

@dcpc10: it kind of dissapoints me that id would actually take out dedicated servers. i still play Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory today and those games have amazing multi player. id would be the last guys i'd think to have done something like this.

All he said was he's gonna sit back and see if some other companies can take the brunt of the outrage until its massaged into SOP. If MW2 PC is some huge nightmare, obviously he won't go down that road. All he's saying is he's glad Activision put its balls on the chopping block first.

Part of me wants to think that Carmack is hoping to bring some heat down on the issue of no dedicated servers. Personally, from the things I've seen about RAGE, it doesn't seem like the kind of game that would use dedicated servers in the same way as deathmatch/CTF/objective-based heavy multiplayer games.

Nonetheless, this is a damn sad thing as well, but without more knowledge about what their game necessarily IS...then I can't get pissed at id at the moment.

Nothing said by Carmack, however, eases my anger with IW.
