So i just played about 20 minutes or so of Rage on my PC...

...and it was underwhelming to say the least.

    The graphics were really buggy-

As in some of the characters were literally blinking in and out of reality

There was weird tearing of some of the HUD that would flash up

There wasn't just a little texture pop-in, but every single time your would rotate your vision, all the textures that you weren't looking at would pop-in....every single time. Worst pop-in I've ever seen.

Oh...and there aren't ANY video settings in the game other than brightness and anti-aliasing. Nothing at all.

I'm playing on an Athlon X4 955 / 4GB Ram / HD 6950 2GB rig with the most recent drivers.

Anyone else having problems? Because I've never even thought of asking for a refund on Steam, but I just might for this one.

Ive seen a video of this. Seems it a driver related issue or what not.

I don't care about the texture pop-in, having played plenty of unreal engine 3 games, but the constant texture flickering is making it unplayable.

Whole sections of the world disappearing, even the letterbox during cutscenes flickers in and out.

somebody posted this video of the pop-in issues on youtube. As far as I can tell from comments on another board, these issues are happening for a majority of players, if not UNIVERSALLY.

    Buyer beware.

Also, guess we know why they were just showing the console versions, huh?

The game probably just has issues because they're just a small developer with very little experience making first person shooters on PC.

@REIGN: Yep, same issues and a lot of people in the Steam forums are having the same issues as well with a variety of system set ups including ATI/AMD & Nvidia cards.

I'm about to install the ATI Rage Performance drivers but everyone in the Steam forums say it doesn't fix the problem and some say it makes things worse.

    Man, this is disappointing.

#Update: Rolling your ATI Catalyst Drivers back to 11.8 ( found here ) will help with a lot of the problems but not all of the problems if you absolutely have to play the game right now and the flickering is making your brain hurt. I'm going to wait it out for some patch work.

It really is a bummer, because the game looks amazing while standing still (^screenie I just took- the textures look super clean, but the pop-in just kills the immersion)

To hopefully lighten the mood a little, I did see a funny thread on the RAGE Steam forum titled "The System Requirements have Changed"

    And it said:

    "Minimum: XBOX360 or PS3

    Recommended: XBOX360 or PS3"

@REIGN: As it has been reported the drivers do nothing at all. Carmack tweeted "John CarmackEveryone, make sure you have latest Nvidia/Ati drivers to play Rage!" So it sounds like he's at least aware of the problem.

The game will literally not even start for me. According to the Steam forums, that's pretty normal for PC users so far.

I own RAGE. It's installed on my PC. Playing videos on the internet is the only way I can combine the verb "play" with RAGE.

Edit: Managed to get it to run by uninstalling, reinstalling, uninstalling, and reinstalling the latest Nvidia drivers. Then restarted the computer a couple of times. But now it works fine. Except for the texture pop-in that is apparently consistent for pretty much all PC users.

Hmm then it could be a driver issue. This is silly, it seems to happen with every major PC game.

Wow! PC gets shafted yet again, why am I acutally surprised?!

Yet another example of games developers deeming it an okay practice to release a game when it isn't in a good condition and actually deciding to patch after you've already pissed off all the people playing your game on that platform.

    Thanks id!

Ah well, lucky I just decided to cancel my pre-order a week ago due to money saving reason.

Even if you don't care about graphics, this is a little beyond that. A lot of the glitches I was getting were affecting gameplay.

Also, I requested a refund on Steam.

I've never done that before, and I'm sort of bummed that I had to, but I would rather not have to wait for patches in the hopes that they would fix everything.

I still really just can't believe that there aren't any graphics setting in the menus...it's just weird...especially from someone like Id.

What game at launch was perfect? None! Get off the QQ train and give it a day or 2 to get patched, shit people.. Dead island was a glitch fest for the first week and now it runs fine on all versions and is and has been in the top 10 steam games played and top 1-3 sold since launch which is like 3 weeks now.. Give the game some time to get patched before you call it shit. K thx bye, day one buyers.

@REIGN: Yeah i know dude, like i said, it really is annoying, it's one thing to play on low/medium graphics setting but this is a completely different problem. Thing is I'm sure they'll fix it, the best thing to do is get the refund and get the game again later on, when it's actually playable. A shame RAGE is off to such a bad start, on the PC at least, post-apocalyptic games are awesome.

Whoa whoa whoa...a refund and the game has been out for 2 hours? Give it a day or two for them to respond man, no need to rush. If you haven't had a refund through Steam yet, you will still have your "You have one chance for a refund" card to play (I got a refund on a game before due to technical reasons even after owning/trying to play it for a week or so), so don't worry about the time issue.

Thanks for making the most nonsensical post in the thread.

There have been a lot of games that were great day 1 on PC. Deus Ex was flawless for me, and The Witcher 2 was as well.

I'm usually a very patient person, but after seeing the problems that this game has, after being in development for something like 5 years now, I'm not sure that I even want to play it any more. Plus, after reading some reviews I am pretty disappointed with how the game itself ended up. 10-12 hours of single-player, and the multi-player is vehicle only? Also, I think a lot of people (myself included) thought that this game was going to be a little more RPG-like, and open-worldy. Sadly it isn't, and the midnight of launch day review embargo didn't help me realize that until it was too late.

Really though, it's my fault for pre-ordering it. I should have been my normal patient self and waited till release.

The reasoning behind the lack of video options is that id tech 5 is supposed to adjust the graphical fidelity of the game on the fly to keep a constant 60 fps. Unfortunately I think the omission of these options are the least of this games problems.

seems a ton of people are having problems,  especially ATI owners. My game only unlocks friday on steam so i cant comment, hopefully ill be fine since im on nvidia, and im usually lucky with shit like this (dead island runs perfectly for me, since the start). Also, again hopefully there will be some quick patches to help out those in need. But i have to say, slightly dreading friday to try it out :/

@Koobz: Make sure you don't have triple buffering enabled in your OpenGL settings.

Not sure what card you own but I have an ATI card, I tried enabling triple buffering and Rage wouldn't even start up.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was perfect when it launched.

ATI OWNERS...Uninstalling your current drivers and rolling back to 11.8 catalyst drivers ( Link ) will significantly decrease a lot of the flickering problems but the "corner od the eye" texture loading when you turn is still an issue.

So if you absolutely have to play it right now you can give this shot and at least the game maybe a bit more playable.

Me, i'm going to wait until a see some patches before i get into it.

I'm running the game perfectly on my GTX 580. I'm loving it thus far.

Most Nvidia cards seem to be running the game fine. Others will probably just have to wait for ATI to release a new driver.

@Franstone: Fortunately for RAGE I happen to be using Nvidia. Had to reinstall my drivers a few times, but now the game is functioning.

Seriously, who the fuck goes in and tweaks their graphic settings any more? The only thing I ever change is the resolution and check to make sure everything is maxed...Usually I don't even change the res because it sets that automatically too. If the game already maxes everything (or adjusts accordingly on it's own in real time) I don't give a flying fuck about any options.

This is just an imagined loss of control, the advanced options mean nothing unless you're experiencing specific technical issues relating to a specific graphic option. And if you're smart enough to figure that out, you're smart enough to figure out a solution outside the game's options menu.

    Umm... ok.

I played Rage for about 3 hours. Its fun, but...

Man the textures seem muddy! I'm rock'n a 560 Ti, nothing to sneeze at... but man!

I mean as a scene, it looks great, but just looking at like... signs that seem to have reasonable text. I feel like my dude is farsighted or what?
