RapeLay
Game » consists of 2 releases. Released Apr 21, 2006
The infamous RapeLay is a molestation simulation that allows you to terrorize a woman and her two teenage daughters. Events in RapeLay range from groping on a train to gang rape and forced abortions.
It is now banned in Japan
" the comments are rather worrying. "why would they ban rape?!?!" "
There are a couple of reasons I am disappointed by this.
With all due respect, I am not endorsing pornography of any kind, and I don't know if you would consider this related but hear me out.
You see, recently a man was arrested in the USA for possessing lolicon manga, or erotic drawings of underage girls, and maybe there were some drawings of child rape. This became a pretty big scandal among comic book fans, writer's etc. because they felt that a piece of fiction was not in any way hurting anybody in the real world (which I find similar to this case).
An English writer named Neil Gaiman wrote an interesting piece about this, saying the following:
"If you accept -- and I do -- that freedom of speech is important, then you are going to have to defend the indefensible. That means you are going to be defending the right of people to read, or to write, or to say, what you don't say or like or want said.....Because if you don't stand up for the stuff you don't like, when they come for the stuff you do like, you've already lost."
Here's what Penn from the Penn and Teller magic shows said on the game. It was pretty interesting, in that he says they're treating the game like a Thought Crime.

You know, that pisses me off.
The game is completely distasteful and offensive.
But the precedent that a game like RapeLay may encourage sexual assault just opens the door for "violent games encouraging violent behavior" and "driving games encourage reckless driving"
"I might not agree with what you say, but I will die for your right to say it" springs to mind
Say, they didn't ban any of those awesome Visual Novel games did they? I've gotta play and finish School Days some day before I die.
I really have 3 ways to post a response:
1. Make an immature comment about how disappointed I am that there will be less virtual raping going on.
2. Make comment about how this is bad because it violates people's "right" to virtually rape/Free Speech
3. Make comment about how it's a good thing because virtual raping games are kind of messed up and so are the people who play them.
I pick all of them.
"@cdfishman said:I think it's more of a problem with censorship in general not "Damn, I can't simulate rape now". At least I hope it is... "" the comments are rather worrying. "why would they ban rape?!?!" "

Bullshit, there are tons of Japanese H-games with extremely shocking scenes far far worse then this little game that someone who did not see them can not even image for years, decades yet it is this one that gets attacked.
Thank you very much western pressure groups, fuck you very much.
What's next? Authors will be to afraid to write about rape in books? Then sex? Violence is pretty bad too no?

It's conflicting because from what I understand, they're are probably worse things being sold in Japan in regards to the adult industry over there.
It's morally disgusting, but where do we draw the line? Are we now suggesting that this rape game teaches people how to rape people? What's stopping crazed anti-gamer-zealots from now pointing at this as an example over why we should ban violent games over the ludicrous idea they teach how to kill?
I do have to admit, like Thrill Kill and Manhunt 2 before it, there is the gamer enthusiast in me that wants to hunt down a copy and just see what all the controversy is about. The company that makes this and the product in question is just about to get a serious boost in publicity.

Funny you should mention that. Do you remember what I posted about the guy who got arrested for possessing lolicon manga? It's an ongoing case that occurred in Iowa, I believe. Writer Neil Gaiman voiced his concern about that case in a lengthy blog post awhile back ago, which you can all read here, if you're interested. He was particularly worried since he wrote adult comics as well, and feels the implications of the manga case could percolate throughout the comic industry.

So what exactly constitutes a "rape game" anyway? Does it have to be a rape simulator? Or does it include visual novels featuring rape as well? Because I'm pretty sure every h-game features rape in one way or another -- it's just how they roll in Japan. I'm guessing only rape sims are banned otherwise those h-game companies would've definitely raised some objections.
In any case, this is kind of bullshit. Does everyone remember how it all started? Someone found this game listed on the US Amazon site and made a big fuss out of it, and now the production and distribution of rape games are banned in Japan. RapeLay was never meant to be sold in the US in the first place, so all of this should've just ended right when Amazon pulled the game.
I'm normally not into rape games myself (though I did play a couple, including RapeLay, and I've got to say this game was pretty damn mild compared to another I've played where you get to use power tools), but Japan giving in to pressure from the West scares me as I'm into certain other media produced there that some people might consider morally wrong, and I wouldn't want to see those disappear.
I'm a libertarian and fully support freedom of speech so I really hope this doesn't ever happen again, but the sad truth is that censorship happens all the time.
It's funny how courts throw the freedom of speech right out of the window when they see fit.
I play murder games, but it's not to prevent me from murdering somebody, it's just to relax with delicious sadism. Rape can be seen in the same way, you can hammer a girl with a post and it won't be to prevent doing it in reality, as somebody sane wouldn't anyway.
This game is no different than other sexual games and violent games. Arresting a person for having drawings of rape scenes is just like the arrest of the guy that had the Cradle Of Filth t-shirt "JESUS IS A CUNT.", suddenly moralism and catholicism play a role in the courts again, ditching freedom of speech right away.
Better a video game than a woman...surely...It's not the same thing but still as Endogene said it takes potential from other things and what not, as why stop there if they're banning things like it could apply to other things. I dont actually think there's anything wrong with it but I wouldn't play it.
I don't agree with the censorship of the game.
It's just politics taking advantage of people's cynicism.
People are not as bright and as sunny as everybodies' conscience would like to assume.
The faster we accept that, the better...
This action just opens the pandora box, for next bans of other "potentially harmful games"... till someday you can only play tetris, if the screen isn't considered too menacing for the human mind.
Somebody said that allowing a game like this is questionable... and hiding away our own instints is better?
Everybody knows what a loose cannon is... and we're harboring desires not fulfilled, just because society condemns it only accentuates the problem.
The virtuallity of a game is a safe environment, where people can mind their own business.
If we start to forbid one thing after another where in our minds will we end?
It's sad to see people hidding their ownselves for the sake of something we can see nor touch: false morality.
And for the safety of their own little conscience.
People for better or worse are animals.
