How do you terraform Mars without any trees?
Come to think of it, how is there snow on Mars? And where's the water for all these people? And if all the structues belonged to the EDF, what happens after the campaign when the EDF are gone? They're obviously the ones with all the money. How does any of this game make any sense?

After the death of his brother at the hands of a corrupt Earth government, Alec Mason has no choice but to join the Red Faction terrorist cell and fight to free Mars from Earth oppression.
Where the hell are all the trees?
" I think trees would clash with the red planet theme. Red fits "red faction" more than green does, right? "What are you talking about man? The Crystalline Aquaberry is red, or rather completely transparent, and the red of the soil shows through and is refracted within!
But seriously, Red Faction is supposed to take place shortly after the planet is colonized, there wouldn't be time nor the technology to terraform it.
There IS snow on Mars. In real life. Real snow. There doesn't seem to be liquid flowing water though.
You could say water is probably distributed on the planet, and oxygen pumped into the atmosphere (although that'd be extremely difficult).
Mars itself is obviously creating money with all those facilities, the Faction itself could strike up a trade deal with Earth, or even the EDF or any other group. Even a major war wouldn't permanently stop trade.
You do realize the game does not take place across the entire planet, don't you? Even then, there is at least grass in the Oasis sector.
After recalling the evil bastard that he used to be, Douglas Quaid thwarted his one time pal and Mars administrator Vilos Cohaagen, witnessed Michael Ironside's arms get ripped off, and magaged to turn on the ancient Alien atmosphere processor, which filled the Martian atmosphere with oxygen fast enough so he and his new lady friend didn't die of asphyxiation and decompression...
oh wait...
A fundamental concept in ecology is the notion of succession.

In regards to transforming or after disruptive events the flora typically have to go through a various stages. Mars would probably have to have alot of grasses and mosses before tree's emerged. More simple tissued plants are necessary to break up the rocks which would inhibit tree formation and possibly create the correct nutrient environment for trees ( i think ? )
I am pretty sure all the oxygen on mars in RFG is made with all the Weed they are growing on the other side of the planet. That area is closed off and secret for obvious reasons...
and yes, all that chronic goes to directly to Still Water gangs...

"Mars as a secret marijuana farm is the best thing I've heard in a long time.
I think it's a fair video game logic question but the game decided to keep the mars aesthetic instead of logic.
Planetary ecosystems are shaky to create anyway so making it work through video game logic is every more so.
