This game is pretty barren. I haven't gotten into a REAL firefight at all.

Yeah I agree.  The price was awesome.  As for the game being pretty barren.  I found that the best servers are the ones with tanks.  The tanks are complex without being overwhelming, and its a lot of fun to try and best the other guy.  The game reminds me a lot of World War 2 Online, except more forgiving and not 15 dollars a month.

Just a bump to point out that Red Orchestra is $4.99 on Steam again this weekend.  I just bought it and it's installing...for that price you can't go wrong, really.

I got these games for free awhile back for some reason but I recommend them, especially for $5.

How diffrent is it from the UT2k4 mod version? I have the 3.3 version of the mod (updated by one of the original modders after release on steam) and since the servers are apparently dead is there any worth in buying this?

Bought this game awhile back and had some fun with it, then kinda forgot about it for a very long time, until I noticed that they were having the sale for 5 bucks again. I quickly snatched a copy for my bro and we found several populated servers for the weekend. We also tried out the Mare Nostrum and Darkest Hour mods since they're both free and are based off of RO, definitely enough WW2 FPS action to keep you busy. If you're coming from a game with a reticule you'll have to get used to using just iron sights but as mentioned above, the amount of teamwork and extra cool features in the game (like radiomen, officers, switching out MG barrels, fixing bayonets, etc.) can't really be found in today's list of shooters imho. It's just so easy to get killed in the first place if you go it alone. Not sure how much longer the sale is but 5 bucks is a steal for this game.

I had a ton of fun playing this online today.  I spent some time as a German machinegunner...I quickly realized how slow and tactical this game is.  Well, at least the map I was playing on was that way.

One thing that really jumped out at me was how realistic and difficult engaging targets at long range was.  I actually killed two of my teammates because I fired a burst of MG42 at them...but at the distance they were at, they looked more like a couple of ants than German soldiers.  Good stuff.

There's still lots of servers for retail RO, something you can't say about the mod. You can find an upwards of ten full 32 man servers at once, still. Also, the retail RO has a lot more features and more polish than the UT mod.
