The "Red Ring of Death"(RRoD) refers to the Xbox 360 error indicator a hardware failure that impedes the system from operating properly. When the console is lying in a horizontal configuration, three red lights at the 2, 8 and 10 o'clock positions( 4,8,10 vertically) are illuminated to indicate hardware failure. The popular term "Red Ring of Death" comes from the shape of this distinctive pattern and is also in reference to the "Blue Screen of Death," which is popular term for a blue error screen found in Microsoft Windows products.

The "Red Ring of Death" is a term describing a Microsoft Xbox 360 hardware failure code in which the console's indicator lights turn red. These failures gained particular notoriety when Microsoft asserted that failure rates of its console were within acceptable limits but later retracted the statement.
Origin of the Term
Causes
There are two possible causes for RRoD:
First, a faulty AC adapter. Microsoft recommends to check the LED light on the AC adapter when the console is on. If the light is Red, the AC adapter is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.
Second, failure of the internal components of the console. The common belief is that the GPU, and the memory surrounding it, do not have a sufficient cooling system to disipate the heat generated while GPU is under heavy use. This excesive heat generated by the GPU and Memory stresses the connections to the motherboard. In the long run some connections will break and the component won't be able to funtion properly. In order to fix this, Microsoft replaced the cooling sytem of the GPU with a heatpipe based heatsink which can dissipate more heat than the original heatsink used in early consoles. Also, peolple believe that consoles produced at the end of 2008 will be equiped with a smaller process (65 nanometers instead of 90 nanometer) GPU which will generate less heat and decrese the posiblilty of failure on those consoles.

Official Response
Microsoft extended the repair warranty on Xbox 360 consoles to three years from date of purchase after the company received negative press in gaming and tech publications and extensive complaints from the community.
