It is probably on its way to breaking. Sometimes the systems take their time to die, getting worse and worse until its gone. I guess you are lucky its happening slowly. Mine did the same thing but lasted only about 1-2 weeks.

I've had that happen before. Actually, I had a little temporary red ring scare shortly before getting a permanent red ring on both of the 360s I've had. Start preparing yourself for the worst.

The red rings happen sometimes when the cables in the back aren't connecting all the way... or something. It's nothing to worry about.

Yeah, spending $500 for a PS3 for no other reason than frustration for having to go two weeks without an Xbox is definitely the answer.

It should be a different ring pattern if that's the case. Like only 2 of the quadrants light up or something.

Mine did that like 4 months ago. Turned it on it's side and it's worked perfectly fine since.

Edit: It's also a launch 360...

Mine did the same thing - 'towel trick' worked for a bit, but eventually it just died and stayed dead.

When I got my brand new replacement 360 yesterday I was pumped to play some 360 after a few weeks. I plugged it all in and hit the button and it came up with a Red Ring. I honestly didn't believe it. I couldn't believe they'd sent me a broken one. Anyways I tried again 2 mins later and it obviously worked fine. Wierd.

I bought my self a PS3 after my second RRoD, cause if (when) my 360 breaks again, there is no warranty left on it, cause i have had it since the launch. And i wont buy a new one.

idk it did do it when the cable was half way out, idk that might have been it... but what i ment about the ps3 comment was, i have wanted a ps3 for a long time, but never had the money for one, so if my xbox bust i was always playing of turning in all my xbox stuff and to get some money for a ps3...theres easily more games i want for a ps3 then for a 360

o and the lights were flashing i dont know if the red rings are supposed to flash, or if them flashing is unusual

My brother's did that.  It lasted 7 months after that happened so I don't know what caused it.

Yeah, STILL get your 360 fixed though, and sell that. I actually thought about selling mine, but decided against it.

It's on it's last leg. My Xbox did the same thing, Unplugged everything (Coords + accessories), turned it on and it worked fine for 20 hours... then it bit the dust, for good.

I dunno, these things seem to of been designed by apes considering how often they break.

Be carefull though, the second you open that sucker up to even look you've void the warrenty and you'll loose out on the free repair / replacement.

There's a 1 year warrenty for things like if you dropped it or something but if you get a Red Ring (3 red lights flashing) or the E74 error the warrenty is extended to 3 years. My 1 year is up but I had the Red Lights so could get it repaired.

Thats why I bought a gaming pc and sold my xbox. I have had 4 360's, love the games but am sick of the bull shit, the games run better on pc any way. There is no excuse for that, it has been almost 4 years since release and this is still not fixed. I say fuck them.

You should probably man up, send in your XBOX, and not play videogames for two weeks.

LMFAO!!!! Ya, that's a smart idea. When yer quality gaming console defects... buy a dusty blu-ray player with shit exclusives. That's gunna solve yer problems.

Shush you.

Sorry to hear about your XBOX woes. I guess at least you can take comfort in not being the only one.

Same thing happened to me. It was a few months between the first and the second time, but after the second time it was done after like a month or two. I'm kinda wondering if there are any easy DIY fixes for these kinds of things like there were for the original xbox/ps2. I've repaired both of them myself multiple times after being told by microsoft that my xbox may or may not come back from service with my save data. The chick actually recommended that I back up my saves on a memory unit. Clearly she had never tried to use one. Those memory units were almost as big a waste of money as the usb wireless adapter (for 360) was.

I can't blame you for wanting to go get a PS3 though. I didn't really want one for the longest time, and I still wouldn't get rid of my 360 for one, but they're getting a lot better with exclusives these days. So I've been considering getting one. The only two things holding me back now are the price, and the lack of backwards compatibility in the new models. That was actually the biggest selling point for me originally, and they took it away.

Depending on what the PS3 offers you directly, I say (as has been said), get it fixed for free and sell it (and your games).  Use that to reduce the price of the PS3.

The PS3 has a major advantage over the 360 when it comes to everything except library.

My 360 is a couple of months old, but only gets about 4 hours of playtime a week.  If it dies with that sort of use, I will sell mine.

gamestop also has a deal that you can turn in your ps2 and 3 games and they will take off 100 bucks off a ps3, i might do that as well as do the 360 turn in

I honestly can't believe people are so accepting of it. This isn't me with my Sony fanboy hat on - I do love Sony yes, but I'm a video gamer first - but the XBOX 360 has to be close to being one of the worst consumer electronics with such a high popularity rate. I mean, nothing really comes to mind, as a popular consumer electronic that is SO problematic. The PS2 was pretty bad - but I hear stories of people on their 6th or 7th XBOX. Which is just... *shrugs* it's beyond comprehension. It's outrageous to put it simply.

When you look at this generation's systems: both PS3 and the Wii have around a 3% fail rate, barely make a sound and are clearly fantastically well built. And while from an aesthetic stance the XBOX 360 looks fine, I simply CAN'T believe how poorly built the thing is. Playing my brothers system, I can't believe how loud the console is (his has been repaired once) compared to the almost silence of the PS3 and Wii.

Naturally gamers will go where the games are - and obviously the exclusives and XBOX Live are a big draw for players. And that's awesome. But I just can't help but feel that the consumer "shoulder shrug" of "I only have to go two weeks without games while Microsoft fix it" have led directly to the fact that Microsoft haven't bothered to fix the core problem. My launch  360 E74'd the first time I plugged it in -- I naturally thought I had done something wrong, given public knowledge on the 360 wasn't so globally aware that the console was terribly built back then. After a year of being a 360 owner (and that terrible drought of games that no-one bothers to mention) I sold the system. Sometimes I wish I'd kept it, but I just can't be doing with the hassle.

I guess I'm ranting, and that's not the purpose of my post - what I'm trying to say is, if XBOX owners would show a little intolerance towards the fact that shipping their system off every year or so is downright unacceptable - perhaps Microsoft would have "redesigned" the system and we'd all have access to the 360's library without listening to a massive fan, an overheating power brick and the dreaded Red Ring.

Before you call "troll", perhaps we could discuss. I actually thought it was terrible when my PS2 broke the first time. Considering I have a working NES in my bedroom, that aside from needing a new plug, has been running games since the 1980's. We also have SNES', Mega Drives, 3DOs, Saturns and Dreamcasts. All of which still work. Capiche?

i agree with you a lot get2sammyb...i dont want to deal with having to resend it in and things like that, its only once but still..though the reason i want a ps3 is to me, their games appeal to me more, and like you said its a more reliable. and reliability is important in buying anything, sadly i some how feel that if Microsoft does fix the probables you said, they will fix them in the new xbox system, and that could be 2 or 3 years down the road...
