Resident Evil 4 was first announced in 2001 and went through a long development period, during which various versions of the game were scrapped. This early version bears greater resemblance to the previous Resident Evil video games. While the beta video displays a move away from the traditional survival-horror camera angles the focus on exploration and puzzles are clear. The beta video also suggest a potential move away from the traditional zombie slaying by implementing ghosts and other supernatural concepts.

The game was eventually released on the Nintendo GameCube on January 11th, 2005. Despite game director Shinji Mikami saying that he would "cut his own head off" if the game was ported to another system, it was also released on the PS2 in October of the same year. Wii and PC versions followed in 2007. The Wii version utilizes the Wiimote's unique control system.

The game was released to widespread critical acclaim, eventually selling 3,000,000 copies worldwide. It was praised for its immersive new style, which drew in many new fans despite alienating a vocal minority of longtime Resident Evil players.

Plot

After the events in Raccoon City were made public, the Umbrella Corporation were dissolved. Leon S. Kennedy, one of the playable characters from Resident Evil 2, was recruited by the Secret Service and then sent to a small European village to rescue the President's kidnapped daughter, Ashley Graham. Upon his arrival, Leon finds that Ashley is being held by a cult called Los Illuminados. He later learns that the cult members are under the control of a parasite called Las Plagas, which are capable of mutating organic matter. It is up to Leon to discover the truth behind Las Plagas, save Ashley and learn the reason for her kidnapping. Of course, he may meet a few old friends along the way.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Resident Evil 4 represents a drastic departure from previous Resident Evil games, featuring much faster-paced action and an over-the-shoulder camera perspective. This perspective, along with the addition of laser sights, afford improved weapon aiming. The game also includes a dedicated knife button, allowing players to engage in more effective close-quarters combat without have to switch to the inventory screen to change the equipped weapon. Context-sensitive controls and quick-time events have been included, which add to the game's cinematic feel.

Inventory

Leon's Attache Case
Leon's Attache Case
Resident Evil 4 utilizes a new grid-based inventory system. The player is given an attache case with a limited number of grid squares to carry items collected in the game. Each item occupies a certain number of the available squares, leaving the player responsible for arranging items to best utilize the limited space. When an acquired item requires more inventory space than what's currently available, the player is required to free up space by using, combining or discarding items. The player is able to buy larger attache cases from the weapons dealer throughout the game in order to increase item carrying capacity. Key items were not limited by the space of the inventory, and instead commanded their own menu.

Extra Content

Completing the game awards the player with two sets of extras. The first is an additional single player chapter entitled Assignment Ada. The player takes control of Ada Wong and assaults the final island base in search of virus viles. There are no save points and the enemy count is increased, which turns this chapter into a mad-dash battle royale, ending in a confrontation with Krauser. The second additional mode is a set of mercenary missions which pit the player against a continuous horde of enemies in a time-limited survival mode. Points are awarded for kills, with multipliers added for combos. Time extensions, ammo and health are scattered throughout the maps and the player's performance is rated at the end of each mission. Multiple characters, including Wesker and Ada, can be selected. Each has their own signature close-combat moves and weapons. A taller, double bladed chainsaw wielding maniac also makes an appearance.

The Mercenaries

This minigame left the player in the middle of one of the main areas of the game with a mission to survive for a set amount of time before a chopper came to pick you up. The goal was to rack up as many points as possible by taking out a lot of enemies quickly, before being rescued. There were five characters and four areas to choose from. Each character started with different weapons, and each stage was equipped with ammo boxes, bonus timers, and time extenders. The stages where it took place were slightly altered from real environments from the main game.

Differences between the Japanese and the US versions of the game

Other than the game being called Biohazard 4 in Japan there is a more subtle difference between the two version that you only notice when you put two screenshots of Ashley Graham of both versions next to another, cup size.

Indeed her cup size went from an A perhaps a small B to a C when the game got released in the US. Other differences include sections of the game in which a zombie with a chainsaw would come after you were cut from the Japanese version because they were too gory and violent.

Reception

Resident Evil 4 was a very large departure from the past Resident Evil games. This dramatic shift worried the most hardcore Resident Evil fans, but everybody else seemed to have loved the idea. Capcom has stated that Resident Evil game sales had been declining for some time and that gamers and even themselves were feeling tired of the old Resident Evil formula. They took the risk of giving the game an " Over the Shoulder view" and the "Tank" controls from the previous installments were mostly eliminated. The game, while much more action packed, also provided many frightening moments just like the past Resident Evil games. The game was a blockbuster hit selling millions of copies, more than any other Resident Evil game had sold. While the hardcore fans missed the old style, they still generally liked the game. The game became one of the highest rated games of all time from both professional critics as well as consumers. It sold so well that Capcom decided to port the game over to the PS2 and ended the exclusive " Gamecube Only Deal". It was later ported over to the PC and then again on the Nintendo Wii.  Because of Resident Evil 4's almost legendary reputation for the changes in gameplay from previous Resident Evil games, it's controls would be moved over and improved upon in the next installment, Resident Evil 5. This caused a split in the Resident Evil community with people complaining the controls were too similar to Resident Evil 4 and that they missed the franchise's roots while others were happy that the controls and gameplay mechanics were returning from Resident Evil 4.
