With Resident Evil 4, Capcom overhauls the mechanics of its popular survival horror franchise with a simple perspective shift, creating one of the most lauded action games ever made. It introduces more formidable enemies, improved shooting mechanics, better graphics, and incredibly atmospheric gameplay.

Overview

Leon Kennedy, in trouble.
Leon Kennedy, in trouble.

Resident Evil 4 was first announced in 2001 and went through a long development period, during which various versions of the game were scrapped, with one radical departure from previous Resident Evil games being kept and retooled into the unrelated Capcom title Devil May Cry. An early version bore greater resemblance to the previous Resident Evil video games than the final product. While the beta video displays a move away from the traditional survival-horror camera angles, the focus on exploration and puzzles are clear. The beta video also suggested a potential move away from the traditional zombie slaying by implementing ghosts and other supernatural concepts.

The game was eventually released on the Nintendo GameCube on January 11th, 2005. Despite game director Shinji Mikami saying that he would "cut his own head off" if the game was ported to another system, it was also released on the Playstation 2 in October of the same year. As of 2011, Mikami has yet to follow through with his promise and decapitate himself. Nintendo Wii and PC versions of the game followed in 2007. The Wii version utilizes the Wiimote's unique control system.

The game was released to widespread critical acclaim, eventually selling 3,000,000 copies worldwide. It was praised for its immersive new style, which drew in many new fans despite annoying a vocal minority of longtime Resident Evil players.

Plot

After the events of the 1998 T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City were made public, the Umbrella Corporation was dissolved. Leon S. Kennedy, one of the playable characters from Resident Evil 2, was recruited by the Secret Service and now works vaguely for the government. In 2004, the feds send him to an isolated village in Spain to rescue President Graham's kidnapped daughter, Ashley.

Leon is accompanied by two policemen on his mission. The game shows that the three are being watched and their car stops next to a narrow bridge. Leon crosses the bridge as it is the only way to get to the village. Upon making his way through the woods, he stumbles across a small house. He enters it and meets the man inside it. Upon asking him if he's seen Ashley, the man goes nuts, throwing an axe at Leon. After killing the man and dodging bear traps in the forest, Leon makes it to the village. He observes from the outskirts and discovers that both of the Spanish policemen have been murdered by the villagers, who see him and begin attacking en masse. Leon barricades himself in a house as the crazed villagers, including one with a chainsaw, try to get him. After holding up the fort for a certain period of time, the church bell rings and all the villagers eerily walk to the church completely ignoring Leon. Leon continues on his quest, killing more villagers, dodging boulders and meeting a merchant who sells him weapons.

Leon eventually comes face to face with Bitores Mendez, a giant behemoth who knocks Leon out. Leon wakes up tied to another man, Luis Sera an ex-Madrid cop who used to do research for a cult known as Los Illuminados. Leon looks through Sera's notes and discovers that the cult is controlled by a certain Osmund Saddler. Saddler controls the villagers thanks to a parasitical creature called Las Plagas, which transforms the people it infests into mindless obedient slaves called Los Ganados. He plans on injecting this into Ashley who'll then inject her father, allowing Los Illuminados to take over the world. While they were knocked out, Leon was injected with one of the creatures, but it will take some time before it takes over his mind. After escaping, Leon keeps on looking for the president's daughter. He comes across a big lake where he sees some Ganados disposing of the body of the second man who'd escorted him on the mission, which gets eaten by a giant fish called Del Lago. Kennedy faces off against the creature and of course wins. He collapses in a lakeside cabin and starts having weird dreams, due to the virus. He discovers where Ashley is being held (in the village's church) and finds a key to open the church.

On his way back to the village, he faces off against El Gigante, a giant abomination that Leon kills. He makes it to the church and one puzzle and a couple of dead Ganados later, he finds and saves Ashley. He also comes face to face with Sandler, who tells them that the parasite is growing inside their bodies and that they'll soon be his puppets. The two escape and head for the extraction point but end up having to barricade themselves with Luis in yet another cabin. After fighting off a seemingly endless amount of Ganados, Luis decides to part ways with Leon and the helicopter that was supposed to get the two survivors out of the hellhole is shot down. HQ tells them that a second one should be on the way and that they just have to sit tight. Leon sees the town's local castle and decides that that would be a good place to hide. However to access the castle, they must get Mendez's eye. Instead of admitting that the plan was stupid and that they should just abandon it, Leon faces off with Mendez in a barn, where Mendez transforms into a hideous monster, but Leon gets the best of him and gets the eye. Ashley and Leon enter the castle, hoping they can find refuge.

All hope of finding some peace is destroyed when they find out that the castle is full of evil monks who use catapults and other medieval weapons to try to kill Leon and capture Ashley. Furthermore, one of Sandler's top men and the castle's "king", a nobleman named Ramon Salazar, jams all of Leon's communications. As the two fight through the castle, Ashley starts coughing up blood, which makes her panic. She runs off and gets captured. Leon must once again save her. He stumbles upon former colleague Ada Wong who'd already previously saved him from Mendez. Ada has her own private agenda (she's working for " the Organization") and remains very enigmatic with Leon. Before Leon can ask her anymore questions she makes her glasses explode and escapes. Leon ends up finding Ashley, who is out of reach. At the same time Luis comes in the room with two antidotes to the parasite, and the Master Plaga, a form of the parasite with a higher "rank" in their hive mind, which will allow the person infested with it to keep their mind and control lesser infested. Just as he's about to give these things to Leon, Saddler comes up behind the poor Spaniard and stabs him with a giant tentacle that is coming out of his tunic. Ashley is captured yet again, and Leon swears to avenge the now deceased Luis.

Leon makes his way to Salazar, who tells him that Ashley has been taken to the nearby island, a research facility. Salazar then proceeds to turn into a giant mutated flower that Leon kills. Leon goes to the island with Ada and after fighting heavily armed Ganados, carrying weapons as powerful as miniguns, he finally finds Ashley along with the Master Plaga and the two antidotes, which they use, finally cleansing themselves of the creatures within. After an epic fight and with the help of Ada, Leon manages to kill Saddler. Ada, however, steals the Master Plaga from Leon but lets the two escape the island via an extremely annoying jet ski sequence.

Leon and Ashley manage to escape the island just seconds before it blows up, Ashley is then flung off of the back of the jet-ski as it lands in the open ocean, Leon briefly searches for Ashley and then circles back to pick her up. As Leon pulls Ashley back up onto the jet ski, he says, "Lets go home" with her agreeing and then saying "mission accomplished." A scene is then shown of the two traveling into the open ocean for some reason, Ashley then says to Leon "After you take me back to my place, how about we do some overtime?" Leon politely refuses the offer.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Resident Evil 4 represents a drastic improvement over previous Resident Evil games, featuring much faster-paced action and an over-the-shoulder camera perspective. This perspective, along with the addition of laser sights, affords improved weapon aiming. The game also includes a dedicated knife button, allowing players to engage in more effective close-quarters combat without have to switch to the inventory screen to change the equipped weapon. Context-sensitive controls and quick-time events have been included, which add to the game's cinematic feel.

Inventory

Leon's Attache Case
Leon's Attache Case

Resident Evil 4 utilizes a new grid-based inventory system. The player is given an attache case with a limited number of grid squares to carry items collected in the game. Each item occupies a certain number of the available squares, leaving the player responsible for arranging items to best utilize the limited space. When an acquired item requires more inventory space than what's currently available, the player is required to free up space by using, combining, discarding, or selling items. The player is able to buy larger attache cases from the weapons dealer throughout the game in order to increase item carrying capacity. Key items and sellable Treasures were not limited by the space of the inventory, and instead commanded their own menu.

Mini Game: Shooting Gallery

At four points during the main story you gain access to areas known as Shooting Galleries. Within these Galleries you are challenged to shoot enemy cardboard cut-outs while avoiding Ashley shaped targets. Finding a new gallery area unlocks a new course in the Shooting Gallery. Points are awarded for hitting enemy targets, more for getting headshots. Each gallery features a row of six Bottle Caps to be won. One Bottle Cap can be earned by obtaining 4000 points or hitting all the enemy targets, while the other five are earned by obtaining 3000 points multiple times. Each course will actually change the layout of the enemies once after successfully obtaining a certain number of Bottle Caps from it. The Bottle Caps can be viewed on their stand in the Key Item Inventory screen. Each Bottle Cap also comes with a sound clip that can be played when viewing it, somewhat reminiscent in quality to actual sound-playing toys. Below is a complete list of the available Bottle-Caps.

The Merchant

Throughout Resident Evil 4 the player will come across a travelling Merchant, who will offer new weapons and items for the player to purchase. The player can also sell anything that isn’t a key item (apart from the knife) to the Merchant and upgrade weapons via interacting with him. On a first run through, the Merchant’s weapons and upgrades will become available at set times throughout the game, on a new game + everything will be available from the start.

Below is a complete breakdown of all the weapons, their upgrade costs and statistics after each upgrade and what their exclusive upgrade attributes the weapon and a complete list of the sale prices for all items including the treasures that can be found throughout the game.

Extra Content

Completing the game awards the player with some extra game modes detailed below.

Assignment Ada

Assignment Ada is an additional non-canonical single player chapter where the player takes control of Ada Wong and assaults the final island base in search of five Las Plagas virus vials. There are no save points and the enemy count is increased, which turns this chapter into a mad-dash battle royale, ending in a confrontation with Krauser.

The Mercenaries

Leon, looking good
Leon, looking good

This minigame left the player in the middle of one of the main areas of the game with a mission to survive for a set amount of time before a chopper came to pick you up. The goal was to rack up as many points as possible by taking out a lot of enemies quickly, before being rescued by an evacuation chopper. There were five characters and four areas to choose from. Each character started with different weapons, and each stage was equipped with ammo boxes, bonus timers, and time extenders. The stages where it took place were slightly altered from real environments from the main game.

Scoring

Upon starting the Mercenaries, Leon will be the only selectable character, to earn additional characters you must earn 4 stars on each individual stage, the village stage unlocks Ada Wong, the castle stage unlocks Krauser, the military base unlocks Hunk and the water world unlocks Wesker.

In order to unlock the Handcannon for use in the story mode you must earn 5 stars on every level with all 5 characters. To earn a 5 star rating you must earn 60,000 points on the stage, you must survive until the time reaches zero, even if you hit 60,000 points, dying will cause the score to not count.

Below is a complete list of the characters and their starting weapons, grenades, ammo and health as well as what hand to hand moves they have and how they are triggered and what boss enemies each stage contains.

Separate Ways

Included in the Playstation 2 and Nintendo Wii versions, Separate Ways is an additional 3-5 hour campaign. Separate Ways follows Ada through the whole game and consists of 5 chapters, each taking place in a different section and time of the game. Players are given a small stash of weapons and ammo and can purchase (but not upgrade) weapons from the merchant. All the treasures from Leon's campaign also exist in Ada's, and in some cases are key items in her quest. Each chapter is preceded by a cutscene and ends with Ada giving a short audio report on a character vital to that chapter.

In Chapter 1, Ada has been tasked by Wesker to retrieve the Las Plagas sample, arriving in the village at around the same time as Leon. The first chapter takes place when Leon's village battle is occurring, and sensing Leon is in trouble Ada must quickly get to the church and ring the church bell to stop the villagers from attacking.

In Chapter 2, Ada has learned that Luis is in possession of the sample but has gone missing. Ada needs to find him ASAP. She starts in Bitores Mendez's (the village chief's) house and must work her way back to the cabin where Leon finds Luis. When she reaches ithe cabin, she finds that Leon and Luis have just been captured by Mendez. She backtracks to Mendez's house just as Mendez and Leon meet in the hallway of the house and Ada saves Leon from being killed by Mendez. Mendez gives chase to Ada and tranquilizes her. Ada wakes up on the bloody altar found near the lift area, about to be sacrificed by the villagers. She escapes, takes the lifts back and after fighting an El Gigante, runs into Luis exiting the cabin where he and Leon had their late night hold-off from the Villagers.

In Chapter 3, Ada is again in search of the sample held by Luis. The chapter starts at when Leon and Ada meet for the first time in the room overlooking the hedge maze in the castle. Ada escapes into the hedge maze and must find Luis to get the sample. Wesker orders Ada to kill Leon on sight during this mission, so Ada must make a pact not to run into him because she does not want to hurt the former acquaintance. Ada ends up in the room of the castle where Leon finds Ashley in the shackles, and hides behind a column as Luis gets killed by Saddler right in front of Leon. Saddler takes the sample from the now dead Luis and escapes. Wesker tells Ada that there will be another time to retrieve the sample.

In Chapter 4, the game takes a jump ahead to the Island, where Ada and Krauser have become distrustful of each other. Krauser is ordered to do the job Ada couldn't do: kill Leon. Ada has to hurry to the room where Leon and Krauser fight and stop Krauser from killing him. This is the first chapter to take place in an new section of the game, a ship dock littered with machine gun turrets and cannons. Ada hurries through and after a small scare on one of the ships, stops the fight and saves Leon.

In Chapter 5, the final chapter, the mission is simple: retrieve the sample. This chapter takes place at the very end of the game, as Ada is making her way through the massive army camp Leon had fought through with the help of his helicopter buddy Mike. After she makes it through killing the straggler soldiers, She's confronted by Krauser again. This fight takes place after Leon had "killed" Krauser, and he is just as tough as he was in the Leon fight. Ada dispatches him again, and makes her way towards the room where Leon and Ashley ran into Saddler. Ada interrupts their confrontation and makes them run away, and Ada faces Saddler in a more human form than Leon gets later on. After the battle seems over, Ada grabs the sample but is yet again captured, this time by Saddler. She wakes up as Leon and Saddler are about to fight the last time and Leon releases her. Ada stands back as they fight and notices the special rocket launcher. Ada hurries to the launcher and throws it to Leon who uses it to destroy Saddler once and for all. Ada takes the sample from Leon, gets on her helicopter and leaves, setting the self destruct sequence for Leon. She then returns the Plagas sample to Wesker, singlehandedly making his mad scheme to destroy the world in Resident Evil 5 possible.

Differences between the Japanese, PAL and the US versions of the game

Other than the game being called BioHazard 4 in Japan, to fit with the series' true name of BioHazard, there is a more subtle difference between the two version that you only notice when you put two screenshots of the Ashley Graham of both versions next to another, cup size.

Indeed her cup size went from an A perhaps a small B to a C when the game got released in the US. Other differences include sections of the game in which a zombie with a chainsaw would come after you were cut from the Japanese version because they were too gory and violent.

The differences in the PAL version are found in the mercenaries mode, throughout every stage the enemy counts and triggers are lowered and rifle ammo will only appear in quantities of 2 and 3, instead of 3 and 5.

Reception

Resident Evil 4 was a very large departure from the past Resident Evil games. This dramatic shift worried the most hardcore Resident Evil fans, but it was proven superior once the game was actually released, and everybody seemed to have loved the idea. Capcom has stated that Resident Evil game sales had been declining for some time and that gamers and even themselves were feeling tired of the old Resident Evil formula. They took the risk of giving the game an " Over the Shoulder view" and the "Tank" controls from the previous instalments were mostly eliminated. The game, while much more action packed, also provided many cheesy jump scares just like the past Resident Evil games. The game was a blockbuster hit selling millions of copies, more than any other Resident Evil game had sold. While the hardcore fans missed the old style, they still generally liked the game. The game became one of the highest rated games of all time from both professional critics as well as consumers. It sold so well that Capcom decided to port the game over to the PS2 and ended the exclusive " Gamecube Only Deal". It was later ported over to the PC and then again on the Nintendo Wii. The PC port, while still receiving positive reviews was criticized for its sub-par keyboard controls, lack of mouse support and low quality cutscenes. Because of Resident Evil 4's almost legendary reputation for the changes in gameplay from previous Resident Evil games, its controls would be moved over and improved upon in the next instalment, Resident Evil 5, which pushed the action even further and added co-operative play for the first time in the franchise.

iPhone Version

In July 2009, an iPhone version of Resident Evil 4 was released on the Japanese iTunes App Store. It came to the US store as well, and plays as a drastically inferior boiled-down level-based version of the real game, much more arena shooting than adventuring.

Xbox 360 & PS3 Version

As of March 23 2011, Capcom has confirmed that Resident Evil 4 HD and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X HD would be coming to XBox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network as two separate downloads on September 20, 2011 and September 27, 2011. This is of course in contrast to the compilation disc, entitled BioHazard Revival Selection, which is slated for a Japanese only release sometime before this fall.
