I've been playing RE5 on my PC and I have to say that I think this game is pretty damn awesome. The graphics are great, the story is good, and besides a few grievances here and there I have to say its a great game.

But for some reason I see the general gaming community treating it like it was the worst Resident Evil game ever made, and I feel the need to ask, why?

There was resident evil 4 which was better, I suppose if you compare re5 to re4, you sort of get an action game instead with absolutely no scare, or horror elements on any level like earlier resident evil games.

It doesn't.

But it does depart from a lot of things that makes the series so beloved. So people dog it because change is a scary, scary thing.

It doesn't suck. Game of the year. Absolutely. I can't wait for the gold edition.

I don't think it sucked. Played it on PC and loved every second of it.

It doesn't. Resident Evil 5 is my potential GOTY. I played that game to death, and I really enjoyed it. People just didn't like it compared to RE4.

#8 Posted by L33tfella_H (901 posts) -

It just doesn't feel like a Resi game anymore, sure some people can say Resi 4 was the start of a completely different Resident Evil, but even that game managed to scare me quite a few times.

Resident Evil 5 just feels way too much like some Cliché hollywood action film, and they've even mentioned how 'Gears of War inspired the control scheme change'. All i know is that Shinji Mikami, the main name behind the series since the start, walked off production of the 5th game and said he was dissapointed in the way it was shaping up, so even he wasn't enjoying the way it was going.

It's a good game, but it probably shouldn't have been a Resident Evil game, cause the only thing Resi about it, is the copious amount of fanservice it throws out.

I haven't read it sucks. I've read its quite good but different from 4.

I really want to see an open world RE set in Raccoon City. Or at least an open world zombie game. Slow moving zombies of course. Not 28 Days Later Zombies.

@JB16: It doesn't suck its just shouldn't be called a Resident Evil game there is no horror to the game. The biggest complaint by most beside the tank controls is that its just a shooter.

Its soulless

  • It's kill room after kill room.
  • RE's puzzle heritage is thrown out the window.
  • RE's backtacking heritage is thrown out the window
  • The inventor system is complete shit.
  • The single-player is awful. I had fun playing with my friend but the AI is FUCKING STUPID. I only tried to play with the AI on the highest difficulty but still... come on.
  • Shoot the orange dot!
  • It fails to meet expectations of the game before it. It doesn't even come close to it, actually.
  • They changed absolutely nothing (er, other than changing the inventory but I definitely prefer RE4's tetris inventor.) The same enemies, animations, music, weapons, etc
#13 Edited by Slippy (735 posts) -

It doesn't suck, in fact it was one of the best co-op experiences I had this year, but it is not a Resident Evil game in the traditional sense.

Also Dead Space was way better.

#14 Posted by Darkstar614 (1098 posts) -

I don't know exactly what it is for me.. I loved RE4 but can't like this one for whatever reason. I'm thinking its maybe the general feel of the game, and maybe the setting. A little too bright for Resident Evil.

Also not really a big deal to most people, but I miss the merchant! "Whaddaya sellin?" and the Inventory felt very "gamey" as opposed to the Attache case.

and i don't think it sucks at all :P
#16 Posted by KennyPowers (247 posts) -

Most people who are passionate about it don't like that is a further departure from the original RE games.  4 reinvigorated the series and was an awesome game, but even then there were many people who didn't consider it a proper RE game.

In my own opinion, its a very good game and I had fun playing it the entire time.  There are just people who will hate it because it is not an old school RE game.  If you go in expecting Resident Evil 1 or 2, you may be disappointed, but if you go in for a well made, enjoyable action game, its very good.

It doesn't suck. It is a fun action packed zombie shooting game.

I also really missed the presence of the Merchant.

Leon>Chris
Although Sheva is kinda awesome, apart from her crappy AI...

Oh yeah, and the ending is messed up...

I think RE5 is cool.  I played through it with a friend on PS3 and I would totally play it again on Xbox to get those points!

Pretty  much this.
Also its way shorter than RE4 and a lot of boss fights seemed noticeably "influenced" by other games like Dead Space, Gear of War and others.

To me it felt like playing Gears if you decided to never use cover and shoot without moving. That was coming off of way too much Gears 2, so it was too much of the same.

Most notably lost planet. The two games had the same producer.

Because Shinji Mikami doesn't work at Capcom anymore.

I don't think it sucks.  I just think that after games like Gears of War and Dead Space have come out, I really don't like having to stop and spin around in one spot to kill things.  I don't think it makes things more suspensful, it just makes them unnecessarily difficult.  That being said, the story was nuts and I never cared to finish the last boss.  I understand completely why someone would like these games.  I just don't think their executed well.
#28 Posted by thecleric (793 posts) -

It's a horror game with no horror

You could call it Call of Duty: Over The Shoulder and it'd take the average person a minute to realize it's not?

#29 Posted by CharlesAlanRatliff (5408 posts) -

It doesn't. The co-op is amazing.

#30 Edited by fallen_elite (380 posts) -

The gameplay is built around co-op which killed it for me as I wanted to play the game solo. Resident Evil 4 had a better atmosphere and you didn't have to rely on stupid AI.

Dead Space was much more enjoyable than RE5 for me.

To be fair, plenty of people are going to put Street Fighter IV in their Game of the Year lists, even though a superior version is coming out next year as well.
#32 Posted by Reuben (622 posts) -

RE5 is a great game, but go play Dead Space and you'll see why it's a downer. Just my honest opinion.

#33 Posted by guiseppe (2840 posts) -

It doesn't. I loved Resident Evil 4, and I still do. When compared to RE5, it definitely stands out as the superior "action resident evil" to me, but that doesn't mean that 5 sucks in any way. I think it's a great game, one of the better games of the year even.

#34 Posted by thecleric (793 posts) -

I don't think RE5 sucked, it just... wasn't an RE game. Outside of the farmiliar names, it didn't feel anything like a RE game.

And RE4 got away with it, because as I stated, it still had the horror aspect. Plus, think about it this way, RE4, imo, is leaps and bounds better than RE3, like it's a HUGE jump. RE5 is BARELY a jump from 4, so I think people were expecting a whole lot more.

#35 Posted by pause422 (6179 posts) -

It doesnt suck, but to me, compared to Dead Space last year, it plays dated and is just boring. Also, RE4 is a million times better. The game is beautiful looking though. If they simply did RE4 and didnt really change it(besides not making you baby sit that dumb bitch Ashley) and used the updated RE5 engine, I would love it.

#36 Posted by Yummylee (21498 posts) -

It doesn't suck, it is still the worst RE numerical title thus far though.
#37 Posted by RobotHamster (4171 posts) -

Because obviously it wasn't nominated for anything duhh.
Seriously though it was pretty damn awesome, i think maybe because it feels like so long ago it came out even though it hasn't even been a year.

#38 Posted by nukesniper (1312 posts) -
@JB16: RE4 was a better game because it was a new concept. If you compare RE4 to RE5 the advances in gameplay are stunning. On another note there is a large RE audience that hates what RE4 and 5 did to the series. making them more action than survival.

RE5 is a pretty damn good game, and I spent a LOT of time with it. So, no, it is not a bad game. Some people do think so though.
#39 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11621 posts) -

It doesn't. There are just a bunch of old-school Resident Evil fans who dislike the fact that the series has become action-oriented. But, would a game like the old REs really sell in 2010? No.

I can partially agree with those people, since I also like the old games, but I came to them after I played RE4, so the movement towards a more action-oriented style doesn't bother me as much, although I can agree that RE4 is simply better because of the impact it had on 3rd person shooters.

On a side note, why the hell is Resi an abbreviation? Is that a European thing?

#40 Posted by ZeForgotten (10397 posts) -

I didn't hate Resident Evil 5 at all.
I enjoyed the heck out of that game, so I'm sorry to say that I won't be the one who reminds you why it sucks because I honestly don't know.
Sure, it wasn't scary but Resident Evil 4 wasn't scary either.
Resident Evil 1, 2 and Nemesis were "scary"-ish.
At least they were Horror games in my eyes

#41 Posted by Brackynews (4060 posts) -

RE5 controls are fine.  You simply don't need to run and shoot.  If you could and the enemy AI wasn't changed, you'd never get touched.  Haven't yet done co-op or multiplayer with anyone who knows what they're doing. :)
Agreed about Dead Space being a better experience in the genre.  But.. I've replayed RE5 more than Dead Space because of the upgrade/shop system being more fun, and it doesn't give a damn about the difficulty level I grind on. :)

#42 Posted by Metric_Outlaw (1171 posts) -

I don't think it sucks, it just honestly didn't hook me as much as RE4 or really any other game I played recently.

#43 Posted by NickL (2246 posts) -

to me, it cant decide if it wants to be a great shooter or a great horror and gets trapped at some odd place in the middle, but i know that alot of people dont agree with me on with that so to each his own i guess

also, where have you seen everyone say it sucks? if anything i think it is the opposite

It did not win (much less get nominated) for any awards at spike.

playing it on 4650 will make it look like a ps2 game.

I think the argument could be made for Resident Evil 4 still having a horror edge, regardless of whether any individual was truly "frightened" by it or not. There is still an intense sense of dread I feel whilst playing Resident Evil 4, probably only rivaled at the time of its release by Doom 3.
#47 Posted by LaszloKovacs (1142 posts) -

I'm not sure why people who liked 4 thought 5 was "too different". I remember my immediate reaction was dislike because it felt like they had changed nothing from RE4. It was really good looking but it played exactly the same. I guess it doesn't look like it fell out of an Edgar Allen Poe story, but I don't think the European castle setting was necessary for a good game experience - I ended up loving RE5.

I thought the enemy designs and the way the levels work are largely the same as RE4, but they just followed some of those changes to their logical conclusion and wound up with a more action-y title. I don't see why that has to be not really Resident Evil.

But then I thought changing Silent Hill into something more combat-focused completely ruined the series, so maybe I'm not one to talk.

RE4 at least had a strong atmosphere which catered to its attempts at horror at least, going through The Village at dark truthfully gave me a few jumps if i happened to walk into a bear trap or get pitchforked in the back. Plus the ambient music was still there, RE5's tracks were always at a faster pace which took alot of any potential horror out of it

I'm with you - RE5 was awesome!

#50 Posted by TripMasterMunky (2402 posts) -

I can tell you why it's awesome.

1. Sheva.
2. Co-op.

As far as why it sucks? I dunno. Versus mode is pretty uncreative.
