Multicultural Zombies??

#1 Posted by Dragonseer (109 posts) -

Remember how there was a lot of controversy after the first RE5 trailer?  Because it featured a white guy shooting exclusively black 'zombies' (or infected).  So now Capcom have decided to feature mixed race hordes in RE5.  In one video feature a Capcom rep told a journalist that they now have zombies of 'All colours and creeds'.  So the question is, does this bother anyone else or is it just me?  Atmosphere in RE games is important and for me this is a big problem.  It has me wishing for some kind of cheat code so it can be played as originally intended.  What do you guys think?

That's rubbish.  I didn't play RE4 because I wanted to shoot spanish peasants.  In regards to the link, to say they did 'some research' and found there were some white and arab people in Africa is a cop out.  They changed the game in response to the reaction, that's fairly clear.

Ever heard of zombie airlines?

It's one of those no win situations, but I guess I'd focus on the gameplay and try not think too hard about that stuff when I'm actually playing.

But shouldn't the real zombies have complained in previous games because the vast majority of them portrayed in the media are white?

I think there was zombies of all races from the beginning, they just released trailers showing a majority of zombies being of African descent to stir up controversy. There's no way I think they said, "oh crap, this is racist," after they received all the backlash and then added more races. I highly doubt that, actually.

I don't think so, Capcom is a Japanese company and the culture there is quite isolated, I know because I've lived there.  White/Black race relations is a sensitive topic in the US only really, and I believe the backlash genuinely took them by surprise.  It is easy to offend people from other cultures without having knowledge of their own issues.

I can understand that point of view, but Capcom does indeed have Capcom USA, which probably (although I am not sure) handles most of the marketing for Capcom Japan over here. Their other studios surely would know about the development of Resident Evil 5, don't you think one of their employees working for Capcom USA would have said something about it?

But whether or not they changed the races of zombies after the backlash, I think the game will play pretty much the way it was intended to.

Doesn't it kind of kill the atmosphere? This is rural Africa we're talking about so the odds of seeing white people/zombies there is pretty much zero. From what I remember there were no black zombies in RE4 but no one said they needed to be included for multiculturalism.

This is stupid, in real life the rural towns of Africa are pretty much 100% black people. This takes a bit from the atmosphere and realism of the locations.

And while there at it, add some baby/child zombies. That would seal the deal.

I think they're all part of the same culture of brain-starved soulless ghouls.

I think almost ALL of the people in this game should be black, BECAUSE ITS AFRICA!

#15 Posted by Vaxadrin (2297 posts) -

That's racist!

Why were people offended in the first place?

You could use your eye of Zombera to call them all, just it might take them a while to get there...

Nice one N'Gai Croal for being hyper-sensitive and bringing the "racism" card to the table.

They're in Africa. There is a disease. Someone has to shoot the diseased people.

Damn if N'Gai played RE4 does that make HIM the racist? Or am I being racist suggesting it?
