The last thing I'll say is this: It's a crazy double-standard. Unless you are of the opposite sex, you can't claim what is and isn't offensive to them. I would argue (and you may argue against it, but I'm done here) that you looking at something and assuming it's offensive to women makes you more sexist by thinking they're so easily offended by something so trivial. Binman makes a good point, as well. If you get a near-nude Chris costume, would you give a fuck? No, I would wager you wouldn't.

I would give a fuck. I dislike the "dolled-up" images provided by all entertainment. I know women offended by video games and I don't think having empathy is sexist. I'm done too.

That doesn't make any of it all right. Your argument is essentially that it's already so bad we shouldn't sweat any of it."
I must say...yeah, that is what I am saying. There is a certain section of games that are just messed-up by default and considering they are actually bought and popular (mainly in Japan), they are going to keep getting made. I don't have problems with RE5 or Ninja Gaiden honestly. The other examples are much more overt in their sexual perversity. A lot of these games just have female characters with big, bouncing breasts and men with huge, steriod-influenced arms and they are total caricatures. I don't think we are supposed to take them that seriously. Games like Mass Effect, GTA IV, and MGS4, on the other hand...I believe those have someting to say about relationships and the real nature of females.

I'll agree that GTA IV and Mass Effect etc. are meant to be taken seriously. The problem is, your average person cannot distinguish and as they make up the mass population, their opinions drive trends such as how females are depicted.

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ARGUING FOR?
It's the first time that you saw a couple with different sex teamed up and they both wear splax costumes- in a media I mean, and did you ever heard of Pornography? well I suppose not.
Women don't have rights to wear everything they want, men either, and it's just a matter of time that we'll be faced with non-privet sexology in the world. You have to agree that you're a little bit different from cats, as an instance.

I would totally unlock and use that costume for luls.

@ Cheapoz: Yes, the costumes may be offensive to you but if you consider the RE series (and audience) in general you'd understand that it is not that far removed from what you should expect. Previous female characters have had similar costume unlocks (as you mentioned earlier), and the tradition continues with Sheva.
Yes, it would have been wacky if there was a chicken costume, but there isn't.

Complaining about the absence of a costume that is less revealing than the original seems petty. These extra costumes are SILLY BONUS ITEMS, and you are not forced to use them.

RE5's main purpose is not to titillate 16 year old boys with breast physics, so it doesn't have an outfit composed of string and some buttons. If there WAS, then I would be inclined to agree with you.

Edit: 100th post! I'm sure no-one cares :)

With the exception of the DOA series, the sales figures for games like Ochenumbra, Rapelay, and games of that weird sort do demonstrate that this stuff doesn't really just sell on looks. Even DOA: Xtreme didn't do well, as well as pieces of shit like Rumble Roses.

Resident Evil and Ninja Gaiden are not seen primarily on their sexual content either. Their action, story, atmosphere, etc. makes them good and they already have crazy going-ons like parasites shooting out of people's heads or crazy, mutated boss creatures anyway so the sexual innuendo doesn't seem too out of place. They are appreciated because of those reasons, not their breast physics engine. So, these games really aren't any focal point of the video game market.

His t-shirt is tight enough as it is that it doesn't need to have any less layers. Also, in pretty much all society, male nudity is more comical than erotic, hence why putting him in mode 'badass' outfits is pretty much equal to Sheva's skimpy stuff.

I prefer Ochenumbra. Because it's funnier that way.

Aya needs this outfit for zombie-killing.

Yeah, Onechanbara, whatever the fuck it's called. i don't know. I am not trying to be ignorant but it is crap anyway so, who cares.

Also, about Rapelay, I guess you can't count it because it really is a specific RAPE sim, but I just wanted to throw it in for added emphasis. I may be technically wrong that it is a videogame, but it deserves to be mentioned because of its horrid nature.

it is a japanese game, what did you expect?
we are talking about a culture where women are supposed to be subdued objects and where the women must cry while having sex for the man to feel good

#80 Edited by KangShinChul (25 posts) -

1) It's a video game with fictional characters. It's not like Capcom is trying to pull punches on anyone.

2) When looking at Chris & Sheva, they're just portrayed as the "ideal" man and woman that people in our society admire. Much like articles or pictures you'd find in GQ or Cosmopolitan magazine that define the "ideal man for a woman" and vice versa. Is that really being sexist?

3) If enough people truly found this game to be sexist, Capcom would have dealt with it. They're a company that wants to please the fandom.

This more of a blunt approach of the issue at hand, rather than analyzing it to a fine point. Not that I'm having a go at the people who are analyzing the issue, because I'm not.

If it can help my defense at all, go easy on me. I'm new to the forum. =)

#81 Posted by PercyChuggs (1087 posts) -

Just because a character wears skimpy clothing does NOT make the game sexist. Give me a break. How anyone could believe that, especially in a game like this where Sheva kicks ass in equal amounts to Chris, is beyond me. Once again, people LOOKING for something to complain about.

Actually, this game is sexiest, because there are a total of like, 3 female zombies. Equal zombification for equal pay.

#84 Posted by zigaroo (87 posts) -

And yet you have women cosplay these "sexist" (lol?) characters quite often.

Anyways, it's apparent m-w.com should be bookmarked for some of you.

#88 Posted by carlthenimrod (1596 posts) -

The alternate costumes are suppose to be silly. Just look at Chris' clubbin' outfit. Nice zebra stripes there buddy.

Overall, Sheva is a pretty strong female character. She is wearing pants. They could have had her wear short shorts and say "Well, it's Africa..it's hot there."

Also in Lost Planet, you can play as Frank West, from Dead Rising, wearing underpants.

For the record, that is the best alternative costume ever.
#90 Posted by spilledmilkfactory (1888 posts) -

it's only as sexist as.. well.. most other games with female leads. ever heard of DOAX?

#91 Posted by TheKidNixon (1564 posts) -

There is two sides of this.

1) Yes, the alternate outfits for Sheeva objectify here. Whether they are "sexist" or not is hard to parse out, but they are troubling all the same.

2) No, they aren't any worse than the vast majority of games out there. And in some cases, far more generous.

2 doesn't excuse 1, it just points to what a sad state games are in in relation to the portrayal of women as more than sex objects. Also, the whole "only men play games anyway" argument doesn't pass mustard either because A) it isn't true and B) it is an explanation, not a valid justification.

Considering the African outfit is an option, and the default is totally fine, and the fact she plays a loyal, courageous and skillfull ally, a little fun w/the other outfits is just pure entertainment in my book.  She's easily in my top two female characters ever in a game along with the gal in HL2.  Kudos to Capcom for rendering her so damn well also.
