Buy Dragon’s Dogma, Gain Resident Evil 6 Demo*

There’s a history of publishers incentivize the purchase of one game with the promise of another. Tobal No. 1 was famously bundled with a demo of Final Fantasy VII, and Capcom will continue that tradition by including download codes for a Resident Evil 6 demo in this May’s Dragon’s Dogma.

Of course, there’s a catch.

If you’re buying the Xbox 360 version of Dragon’s Dogma, the Resident Evil 6 demo becomes available on July 3. If you’re buying the PlayStation 3 version of Dragon’s Dogma, however, that very same demo is locked into Microsoft exclusivity for two months--the demo won't arrive until September 4.

How does Capcom explain this? Well, it mostly doesn’t.

“That's a considerable leg up for 360 owners, but still an early chance to check out RE6 (due out November 20th) for PS3 owners,” said the company in its announcement post on Capcom Unity.

Dragon's Dogma launches on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on May 22.

*preorders Dragon's Dogma*

Also I don't care about the extra wait; I'll just get the demo (or Dragon's Dogma I should say) on the 360 but stick to my ps3 RE6 preorder. Now if they were pulling some of that 360 temp-exclusive DLC bollocks, then I'd feel a little peeved.

Guess who has no reason to purchase Dragon's Dogma? PS3 Owners.

#6 Posted by Draxyle (1888 posts) -

Console exclusivity..? For a demo? Really, Microsoft? Really, Capcom?

#7 Posted by Enigmatical (137 posts) -

Meh, this bothers me. How much confidence does Capcom have in Dragon's Dogma if they are tying their flagship's demo to it?

#8 Edited by themangalist (1742 posts) -

Dragon's Dogma looks like a blend between Skyrim and Monster Hunter. Already more interesting than Kingdom of Amalururururururu or whatever that game is called. IN MY OPINION OKAYY!!!???

#9 Posted by cikame (1057 posts) -

Just watch the RE6 demo on youtube or something.

I remember hearing about Dragon's Dogma 2 years ago and haven't really seen anything since.

#10 Posted by Firelogic (23 posts) -

@Enigmatical: It's not necessarily a lack of confidence in Dragon's Dogma. They've invested a ton of time and money into the game and it's being handled by their largest and best development team. SE included a demo for FFXII on DQVIII. I doubt they lacked confidence in that title.

IMMA DRAGON AND IM GONNA TEACH YOU MY DOGMA.

#12 Posted by SuperWristBands (2266 posts) -

I want to buy Dragon's Dogma already so this is cool, I guess. Unless Dragon's Dogma turns out to be total shit then I wont. Hoping that doesn't happen but I have a bad feeling.

#13 Posted by JJOR64 (19051 posts) -

MUST BUY NOW

#14 Posted by IkariNoTekken (990 posts) -

So... people will buy Dragon's Dogma to get hold of the demo, the game will become a cult favourite in the process and then it'll have a disappointing sequel.

Isn't that right, agent?

#15 Posted by Keeng (1002 posts) -

Gross, but whatever. I think anyone who would buy Dragon's Dogma just to play RE6 earlier would also be buying RE6 and the game's out on both platforms the same day. This is meaningless.

Microsoft can get exclusive rights to a demo but they can't get any exclusive characters for a fighting game?

#17 Posted by RsistncE (4496 posts) -

lol, so happy I stopped by Crapcom's garbage products which are now either released in an incomplete state so that they car release a "SUPER ULTIMATE!!!!1!!1!!" version later, or they're tied down with silly restrictions. They haven't made anything noteworthy since RE4.

Second largest actually. That title was swiftly taken by RE6 :P Like 600+ people overall.

#19 Posted by Enigmatical (137 posts) -

@Firelogic: Hey, I want to take the optimistic viewpoint, too. The gameplay videos look pretty amazing and I'm a closet fan of Monster Hunter so anything resembling that is awesome... I'm just concerned.

As an aside, didn't they -just- release a press release saying that the crew on Resident Evil 6 was the biggest crew they'd ever assembled to work on a game? Question for the next Capcom news conference - Which one truly is the biggest?

Hah, that's right! I just mentioned that.

They are both interesting, no need to knock one down.

Yeah...no.

#23 Posted by AlwaysBeClothing (1496 posts) -

Its no more disgusting than getting Crackdown for some sort of Halo beta access. Also the Demo will probably be able to played through some..... extraneous means. What makes me disappointed is I thought this was that 2d hand animated brawler with Dragon in the name. I always get them confused.

#24 Posted by vinsanity09 (211 posts) -

Find the demo on the internet, burn it on a CD-R or DVD-R. Problem solved (for 360 owners at least).

#25 Posted by Krakn3Dfx (2501 posts) -

Why don't I just wait until the RE6 demo is out, and by then I'll be able to pick up Dragon's Dogma for like $20.

I win!

Demo exclusivity? Sigh...

Buy neither, save money AND time!

#29 Posted by spilledmilkfactory (1894 posts) -

Who cares about console exclusivity for a demo, of all things? I already know I'll be dropping 60 bucks on RE6 anyway.

#30 Posted by TadThuggish (909 posts) -

To be fair, this is the first exclusive game-something Microsoft has cared about in several years. (They still care about other kinds of exclusives! TMZ app, UFC app, Twitter app, SyFy app...)

#31 Posted by AngelN7 (2972 posts) -

Man that's a long ass time for holding on a Demo, Im still going to buy Resident Evil 6 so whatever, Dragons Dogma will have to do something else to get my attention , so far it seems kinda cool moster huntery without the thing about MH that pisses me off .

Never heard about this game (or forgot), but that makes it sound amazing.

This is where the SFxT character money went.

#34 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) -

Nope.

#35 Posted by Vorbis (2750 posts) -

Really, this is what Microsoft are spending their money on to get exclusives?

My thoughts exactly. This exclusivity thing pisses me off so much.

#37 Posted by MrXD (240 posts) -

Man, Microsoft are trolling at PlayStation 3 owners. :S

#38 Posted by 617_jbug (346 posts) -

@Skooky: exactly. I would rather have Mega Man and Pac Man.

#39 Posted by TobbRobb (4817 posts) -

I'd rather buy RE6 for a Dogma demo.

#40 Posted by Tebbit (4480 posts) -

Whenever these exclusivity issues crop up, Microsoft always end up looking like wieners.

#41 Posted by TheBrainninja (201 posts) -

@Draxyle: I know, right? It's completely ridiculous and divorced from any concept of reality. Holding "betas" and demos as some kind of "reward" - or a blatant marketing tool - is entirely opposed to the reason they should exist: to give people a taste of your game to see if it's their flavor.

This is, frankly, disgusting, and while I know this is not the first time it's happened, it is a practice deserving of ridicule. And to be honest, I'm going to need a demo of Dragon's Dogma before I buy it - I just hope I don't have to buy SFxTekken to get that.

#42 Posted by Cloudenvy (5891 posts) -

No thanks, MS! I'll take my 5 bonus characters in SFxTekken instead!

#43 Posted by mikey87144 (1811 posts) -

A demo exclusive... for a game launching in November?

#44 Posted by Humanity (9855 posts) -

Microsoft loves throwing money around.

#45 Posted by phrali (646 posts) -

probably this just means that dogma is going to suck.

tobal no 1? yeah, would anyone have bought that?

bulletstorm? yeah people didn't buy that for the gears beta, it was just a great game.

#46 Posted by Masha2932 (1242 posts) -

The game looks interesting. I like how you can grapple onto the creatures a la Shadow of the colossus.

You're free to hold your own opinion, I just thought I'd tell you that opinion is wrong.
#48 Posted by ThePhantomStranger (381 posts) -

Oh look a paid demo...so when is the normal demo released? You know the one I download for free to judge if I want to pay $60 for a game about shooting presidents...oh wait that doesn't seem like it's happening....

Obviously Nintendo passed their insane demo thoughts onto Capcom and this is merely stage one...

#49 Posted by beard_of_zeus (1705 posts) -
@Draxyle

I know, right? What is the point of excluding people from trying out your game?
#50 Posted by ArbitraryWater (12004 posts) -

I would rather have Bad Box Art Megaman and Pac-Man in my Street Fighter x Tekken than have the opportunity to buy a bad-looking game so I can play a demo of Resident Evil 6 earlier. Microsoft is using its wallet on the wrong things.
