Thoughts on the Co-Op? Will there be any?

#1 Posted by macky (14 posts) -

Yesterday RE: 6 got revealed and i've been waiting for ages to get this confirmed. The trailer didn't make me disappointed in any way but it left me a bit confused tho. They've surely added some new mechanics to the new RE: 6 game coming up and as far as i can say it appeals to me, so that part is more or less a sealed deal if you ask me. Now after seeing the trailer a few times i've started to think about what made RE: 5 such a good game in my eyes; and the one of the most important thing with the game for me was the multiplayer experience. The whole full story co-op in RE: 5 was exactly as the single player campaign and that what i loved with it. Having this stated i wanted to check with you guys if you have any thoughts about the co-op part in RE: 6 - will they implement it or not at all? What do you think? Or have you read or heard any rumors 'cuz i haven't. Ofcourse time will tell and the speculating will help time pass.

Leon's story will (hopefully) be an entirely solo affair, and I think Chris' will, too. It's this third guy's story who looks like it'll centred specifically around cooperative play. The whole point they're throwing across if they're appealing to all of their fans across the series; the horror purists, the action junkies and the people who want to play with their friends. If they all feature coop, then I'll be supremely disappointed =(

It's a bit early to be certain right now- but it already sounds like Capcom's ready to break your hopes:

From Joystiq:

It turns out that Leon will be joined by a brand new, highly alliterative security worker named Helena Harper, while Chris Redfield's partner remains unknown.

So it really sounds like all three stories are going to have co-op. (Though who knows- maybe the 3rd story will be solo after all. :P )

I read about that stuff, but I've figured that it was only from a story perspective. The gameplay they shown of Leon had him on his lonesome from what I can tell, even if the cutscenes did have him alongside his booty call rather prominently.

But maaaaan, I mean OK CAPCOM, y'know what? If Chris' story is also based around coop or something similar (like squad mechanics, wut) I'll accept that, as long as they give us navigating through dark and dreary environments as Leon - alone. I mean c'mon, now. They hafta give me something, and they've got three (maybe four, with the possible Ada story that's unlocked afterwards) storylines happening here, they can't not give fans some solo action. But it's too early to say for certain; multiplayer details are coming soon they've said, so all we can do is wait....

I'm just about to leave for class but I can put my source up later but i do believe they already said it is all co op. however maybe it will be unlike re5 where you always have a partner. So when doing Chris's stuff you will have an extra bsaa soldier and for Leon someone else. But if your playing single player they will be solo. These are just speculations of course. Either way game looks amazing

#7 Posted by macky (14 posts) -

My thoughts are if they don't have the full story co-op option (both offline and online) in RE: 6 it would be like taking a step backwards in their evolution. I noticed when RE: 5 got released and played by people around me is that people started to play the game's story co-op instead of playing it alone in single player. In other words; friends waited for each other to progress and play through the game together. The single player experience was nice as well, but the whole 'team'-feeling in RE: 5 was just too good to see past. Then again that could only be something that i experienced?

Another thing i was thinking about is RE: Operation Racoon City. Maybe they wanted to release a Multiplayer-based and a Singleplayer-based game? So they could concentrate and put the right resources into two games instead of just one and maybe messing up all the ideas the creators had. I know it's a bit farfetched but it makes kind of a good point. Sure RE: 6 is more horror and OR City is more a action based game, but still. It could be a possibility? Or just something else down that road... I sure hope they will have the co-op through the full campaign game in RE 6!

@Sackmanjones: If you can find the source for that and put it up it would be appreciated!

First RE game I ever played was 5, and going through it co-op with a friend became the defining RE experience for me, so naturally I hope they bring it back fully. That said, hopefully they can find a way to make it less intrusive for those who wish to play alone.

#9 Posted by Linkin10362 (602 posts) -

Leon has Helena.

Chris has Beard Nevence. (Scarf Soldier who seems to be the only remaining survivor of the China events)

And "Steve" has Ashley.

Looks like full game co-op to me.

#12 Posted by believer258 (11802 posts) -

The conclusions of this thread seem to say that the game is going to have co-op.

Which is, in essence, Capcom grabbing a bow, notching an arrow, and shooting the game directly in the...

...

...

Well, you get the idea.

I did enjoy RE5 but co-op hurt the single player experience extremely. It should have been a spin off game, not the next main game in the series. Sheva was an idiot and constantly got in my way as I played it, reinforcing my opinion that no game should have an AI companion that you have to constantly concern yourself with.

#13 Posted by Klaptos (182 posts) -

All co-op or bust.

#14 Posted by DarthOrange (3858 posts) -

I want all co-op, but I want more segments were both teammates are separated for an extended period of time. As in each charter goes there separate ways (for some missions) and meets up at the end to fight the boss, and if one person gets there before the other, they start the boss fight alone.

Every character scenario seems to come with a partner:

Leon: "It's all my fault" girl

Chris: "I'm right there with you" guy

Probably Alex Wesker: Ashley

Not really what'd I want though - being able to co-op everything was a major plus on RE5. Would perhaps a better solution be that they abandon the idea that the AI partner is supposed to be a full replacement for a human player? Just focus agro on the main player, give the AI a weak weapon with infinite ammo and script it to stay out of the way mostly.

Alyx in the Half-Life Episodes did that OK, but she still got in my way at times.

The real problem with replacing humans is that nothing really replaces humans. You can add all the AI routines that you want to, but it still won't ever replace the ingenuity of a human being. Humans, you see, can think on their own and know when to move, where to be, when to shoot, etc. I don't have to worry about an equally skilled player in co-op because I can trust him or her to get the job done and if that person fails, we can try it again and come up with another idea for defeating the challenge in front of us.

AI routines can't do this. Unfortunately, I like playing single player a whole lot and AI partners who are supposed to be your equal always wind up getting in the way or getting themselves hurt. It doesn't work. I'm fully against it being a forced "feature" in a game. If an ally must be with you and must help you, then giving them invulnerability or a huge health bar is a better idea than AI partners who are meant to be your equals, because then it starts feeling like escort missions.

If it has to be all co-op, I sure as hell hope that there will be no AI partner if you wish to go solo. Or at least I hope the Leon stuff is solo. I feel like co-op would ruin the dark atmosphere of his portion. I mean, Leon's stuff is the best looking stuff and I wish RE6 was all of that instead of the globetrotting. The Tall Oaks stuff really looks like a return to classic RE form, yet still being fresh and modern.

#24 Posted by sickVisionz (1268 posts) -

I had a blast with the team setup in RE5, Even when I played it solo I never had a problem with Sheva like how everyone else seems to have. No co-op story mode would definitely feel like a major step back for me.

But... I want to see what happens with Mercs mode. I spent more time playing that than I did playing the story mode. That will be what pushes me to day one buy or wait until it goes on sale.

#25 Posted by ozzy369123 (44 posts) -

I would think so since co-op was such a large part of the previous game.

#26 Posted by Deusoma (3005 posts) -

I really, really enjoyed playing through RE5 with my brother, so I will be supremely disappointed if RE6 cuts the feature. I would prefer, though, if they altered the storyline to make the player alone in singleplayer mode, or at least made the AI companion not as much of a central focus of gameplay.

Well fuck you then XD

In all seriousness I would prefer it to be single player and I have absolutely no good reason for that other than it is my preference. I find games that are designed with co-op in mind as the main mode aren't nearly as good playing by yourself. The exception would be Gears, which I thought balanced the two really well

#28 Posted by TentPole (1858 posts) -

You people and your damn co-op. Making me fill like a grumpy old man wishing for the good old days.

#29 Posted by macky (14 posts) -

@TentPole: Good old days had co-op at it's best! Didn't you play through Battle Toads and the TMNT games back then?

Anyway i'm happy to see that the majority seem to be on the same page as me with the co-op part about both RE5 and RE6 as it seems. Sure single player games are heck of fun but to pick up you'r phone and hit up a friend to kick back in the couch together, or play online through a good co-op game, is one of the greatest gaming experiences you can have. I think that a lot would agree with me when i say that. The company you may have can make a bad game great, but mix a great game with great company and it'll be one giant bomb!

RE: 5 (and i hope it applies to RE6 as well) is one of the few games out there where the co-op gameplay/story/experience is excellent, in my opinion.

@Abyssfull: I personally don't see what the problem is with co-op. What I see happening with RE6 is that Leon's story will mostly resemble how RE4 played and Chris's side will continue the trend that RE5 had. I myself, absolutely loved both RE4 and 5 and I'm glad that they are trying to appeal to both ends of the spectrum with this new game.

That makes sense from the trailers standpoint, it'd be somewhat unique, and it would definitely go for all RE fan base if that were the case, but I would hate that. You either make it all co-op, or you don't make it co-op at all if we're talking about the campaign. It wouldn't be consistent and the reason it'd be unique is because it wouldn't make much sense. Going through the game, "Oh! Whoops, sorry pal, this is only a solo part, so you can sit and watch for a few hours until we play the next part".

I don't have a problem with coop; I'd be totally fine if both Chris' and Young Ginger Ocelot both heavily focused with playing by another character's side. But I still want have something take me back to the old days, looking out only for myself with no banter going on during the slower sections. Leon's story is what I was hoping would be that throwback, but since a lot of evidence suggests that the entire game is centred around cooperative play, it looks I'm going to miss out. Which I just find to be downright selfish frankly, but I shouldn't start to judge too harshly until it's been officially confirmed.

That's not how it's designed, though; what it sounds like is that each story--Leon, Chris and Ginger--all have their own separate campaign that you can choose to play in any order. Obviously it would stupid if it was all meshed together and they all flowed into one another when the story dictated it.

#34 Posted by Deranged (1837 posts) -

@Abyssfull: Well, there's still time until the game releases or we have actual dedicated videos of gameplay, but so far Leon's side of the story seems to strongly follow RE4's style of play and perhaps they'll add in an ability to opt out the A.I. character if playing solo? Only time will tell, but I understand where you're coming from.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww... I read that on Rely on Horror, but they updated it saying it was shot down by CAPCOM.

Oh, well after checking back up I guess only some of the details were hit and miss. I don't want to believe it just yet, though... I'd rather just wait for some concrete confirmation straight from CAPCOM. /denial.

I imagine it's for some sort of arcade alternative, or maybe for Chris' storyline since that looked to feature a large amount of B.S.A.A doods rollin' at once.

EDIT: Oh, and there's the matter of Ashley, too. They got that info off of the Operation Raccoon City page, but considering that was posted by Slant Six, I'm still not quite convinced as of yet.

I had alot of fun with the RE5 co-op.

#38 Posted by RandomInternetUser (6789 posts) -

I want co-op throughout the game for sure, but I want the second player to just be a random dude that's with the first player. Dealing with Sheva's AI while not playing co-op in RE5 was possibly the worst thing about that game. It was alright mostly, but at times it was OHMYGOD AWFUL and a real fucking pain to deal with. So yeah, I want co-op but not co-op so central to the game that they have to push in a half-assed AI character that screws you over sometimes throughout the entire game.

I sure hope the 6 player co-op is in mercenaries mode. I can't really imagine the co-op campaign would be so good if you're playing 6 persons. 2 Persons being able to play the story campaign co-op is the perfect amount for these kind of games. Though CAPCOM are good so they might succeed to pull it off. I sure hope the gameplay will be like the RE: 5 with the tank like controls since it gave kind of a nice feeling. The decreased mobility mixed with a heep of zombies approaching you in a tight space and giving you that panic feeling is obtained best in the RE games!

So we've got:

  • Mercenaries mode.
  • Arcade mode, essentially allowing you to play through the campaign stages/chapters or whatever with 5 friends with no story context.
  • Chris' story? Again, just because he looks to command a whole squadron.

I think they're the most realistic assumptions unless CAPCOM announce something entirely insane. Oh and the tank controls? They're pretty much extinguished since CAPCOM have said that for the controls, they done a ''complete overhaul'' Which is fine. With the faster paced action route, it only makes sense, and even if they were delivering on something reminiscent of their survival-horror roots, removing tank controls would help further prove that survival-horror can exist without controlling like you're playing a game from the last century.

As for the other 8 player thing they got goin', that could possibly be an iteration of that super sucky Versus' mode from RE5. Since that was listed separately, I think that all but confirms it's a competitive mode of some sort.
