Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Is Real

So, that rumored Slant Six and Capcom Resident Evil collaboration is real. This morning, Capcom Europe unveiled Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, a team-based third-person shooter. It appears that the game will primarily be played by two four-person teams, who are competing against each other while simultaneously dealing with zombies and other "Bio-Organic Weapons."

As for other modes available, Capcom has promised that Slant Six will “deliver a number of competitive online multiplayer modes,” all of which will “provide a unique gaming experience.” Despite the game's cooperative focus, it will be playable in some sort of solo format, as well.

== TEASER ==All of these potential modes are to be set in September 1998, covering events within the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis timeline, but not the one you’re familiar with. Operation Raccoon City is a “reinterpretation” of the events depicted in both games, introducing another T-Virus outbreak in the fabled city and the two new squads: the Umbrella Secret Services and US spec ops. Series characters like Leon Kennedy, as well as “iconic landmarks” will be making a return.

Slant Six, you may remember, is no stranger to squad-based shooters. Some of the studio's past work includes multiple games in the SOCOM series, including the downloadable PS3 release, SOCOM: Confrontation.

Raccoon City is slated for a release this winter across the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Cant wait!

I have no hope for this game. I got burned bad by Socom Confrontation so I probably won't be picking this up.

The link on the front page is coming up 404 for me.

Edit: fixed.

Left 4 Dead style is the only way I can handle zombies these days, all for it. Hope it works out well.

So the game is being developed by a SOCOM B-team?

#9 Posted by nERVEcenter (180 posts) -

SOCOM with zombies? Intrigued, I am.

Not fair.

Yeah, so expect gig size patches that add features that were in the games manual, but not in the actual game months after release.

I'm pretty excited for this, it has a lot of potential to be something awesome. Or a complete mess...Hopefully something awesome.

eh. Dunno about this.

#14 Posted by gamb1t (965 posts) -

I am way to stoked for this game.

Again Capcom handing its huge titles to questionable western developers. Do they really think this will work? First Devil May Cry to Ninja Theory, and now this... Slant Six couldn't even make a game you could actually play at launch and when it worked, you didn't really want to play it anyway.

I just hope these don't turn out to be terrible... Actually I guess I do hope these will be terrible so they will stop doing this and put these franchises back in the hands of the people who created them, and made them awesome.

But I guess all of those people worked at Clover, and now Platinum Games or are doing weird team ups with other high profile Japanese devs. Oh well!

Well Devil May Cry hasn't come out yet and I think the fan reaction to Dante's new look is stupid, now if the game is garbage go right on ahead and dump on Ninja Theory but it isn't out. Now if you want to look at bad examples of Capcom western developed games Bionic Commando comes to mind.

Big question is.. Can you run and shoot at the same time?

Cool concept, I'll wait for the final product.

you can do that in RE: Revelations for 3DS (walk and shoot at the same time) and since Operation RC is made by a western dev, those should be two reasons why it would make sense to assume that you CAN in fact run & shoot

Goddamnit, Resident Evil. There was once a time when I'd die for you.. then re-animate, and die again! :O

Playing as an organized para-military unit in the Resident Evil-verse seems like such a weird concept. Unless all these hardcore soldiers are still gonna be dropped in the middle of the zombie apocalypse with a pistol, a knife, and a bagged lunch and mittens.

...which I can still see happening. *stink eye @Capcom*

But it's canon, It's the squad from RE2 during their raid to acquire the G-Virus from William Burken.

I'm still confused as hell as to what this game is. Is it competitive co-op arena based multiplayer with zombies? Is it like Demon's Souls/Mindjack with actual story progression? What is it?

#30 Posted by Rmack (1078 posts) -

My big question: will Tofu be in it?

#31 Posted by blaakmawf (543 posts) -

Yes! Leon is the man!

#32 Posted by Vorbis (2750 posts) -

Zombies or nothing.

It's not canon. I mean, that operation with HUNK obtaining the G-Virus is canon, but this won't be, as they're sent there as the clean-up crew, not to extract the G-Virus. It'll also allow players the option to kill major characters (most notably Leon) in whatever semblance of a story it has.

It's sounding to be similar to the Outbreak games on the PS2, with four player coop undergoing a set story - most likely split up between chapters. It won't play like Outbreak, though; instead of being a team based survival horror game it'll be like a fast paced run and gun shooter.
That'll be the primary mode of play most likely, with some competitive stuff in there as well.

Oh nice, it's coming to PC on time!

So Resident Evil ORC?

I could play some new RE.

I miss those days when I actually loved Resident Evil.
Seems like with every new game they push me further and further away.
#39 Posted by Blacknight (23 posts) -

This is a Resident Evil game I would actually consider playing. Although slant six does give me pause.

#40 Posted by Undeadpool (4948 posts) -

Resident Evil without Shinji Mikami gives us RE5...I'm going to need to see more of this to convince me it's a good idea.

#41 Posted by DukesT3 (1917 posts) -

Hm... I don't know about this one. After renting SOCOM confrontation lets just say I thought the series would be dead after that but who knows. Maybe Slant Six learned from its mistakes on what not to do and improve its game quality.

#42 Posted by zityz (2360 posts) -

3rd person left 4 dead...ok gotcha.

#43 Posted by nickux (1385 posts) -

This actually gives me hope for RE6. If the spin-off games in the series focus on the more action shooter-y type stuff that hopefully leaves the main entries left to be more atmospheric, slower-paced, survival horror like they used to be.

#44 Posted by latenitegamer (3 posts) -

this could really go ether way, hope its on the good side.

#45 Posted by Romination (2777 posts) -

Sounds OK, but remembering the previous attempts at co-op RE games has me a bit more cautious.

#46 Posted by TheLawnWrangler (1657 posts) -

awesome. I've been a fan of the outbreak series for quite some time and have always wanted a third. this is close enough!
