Used by protagonists when opening a door that is locked, or just for looking really cool.

Alien Invasion

Games with stories that involve aliens invading the main character's home planet.

Aliens

Extraterrestrials appear in many, many video games in a massive variety of styles. Sometimes they're evil bloodthirsty invaders, sometimes they're adorably cuddly sidekicks, and sometimes they're very much like us.

Alternate Reality

Alternate reality, or alternate history, is a fictional setting where history is altered by an event disturbing an established timeline.

Automated Grenade Throw

Automated Grenade Throw refers to games that have specific controls for tossing a grenade, as opposed to being forced to switch out your current weapon with a grenade before throwing.

Breakable Glass

Glass that can be broken and destroyed in real time

Checkpoints

A point within the game whereby the game saves its current state whether it be for the purpose of a more convenient respawn point or a gameplay design (such as in racing).

Chimera

Creatures of unknown origins that were once humans but have now been modified. All that is known about them is that they came out of Russia.

Circle-Strafing

Circle-strafing is strafing around a target while facing it. This is useful for disorienting the target's aim, making for an easier kill.

Clan

A group of people who play a game or games together. Can be a team for competition or just for fun.

Classes

How do you like to play your game? Do you prefer getting up close to enemies with melee weapons, or would you rather snipe opponents from a distance? Do you like to cast magic and summon creatures, or is healing other players more your style? Classes allow players to choose a particular archetype in a game and play the role they want to play, instead of the one they don't.

Cooperative Play

Cooperative play in games allows humans to play together as a team to accomplish a task. Instead of playing against a human opponent, the team must defeat an AI.

Crash Landing

Games involving any form of vehicular crash landing or emergency landing

Crosshair

A sight placed on the HUD used to aim and provide a point of reference to the player when looking and interacting with the game world. Although they often aim weapons, they have a variety of uses and have appeared in many games in many different forms.

Crouching

Crouching is an essential part of many shooters, and can be useful to stay under cover.

Cutscene

A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement.

Death

The main line of distinction between victory or failure in video games.

Difficulty Level

Sometimes you want a challenge, sometimes you wanna coast.

Downloadable Content

Downloadable Content is anything that adds content on to an already-released game, whether it be new songs for Rock Band or new cars for Forza Motorsport 2.

Explosion

Something that blows up in a huge firey hell! Usually due to ill placed explosives or general "accidents"

First-Person Perspective

First-Person is a vantage point that attempts to simulate looking through a game character's eyes. It is most commonly found in First-Person Shooters and Racing games, but also finds its way into other genres, such as RPG's and 3D Platformers.

High Definition Graphics

A console game is high definition if it operates at a resolution of at least 720p, or 1280x720. A console able to achieve this resolution is HD-capable. For a variety of reasons, the term does not apply to PC games.

Historical Inaccuracy

Games that do not abide by actual historical timelines for design or plot points, or time constraints are considered historically Innacurate.

Instant Kill

Whether it be a close up shotgun shell, far off sniper rifle, explosive, or backstab, the "one hit kill" is a popular kill strategy. Usually hard to master and even harder to avoid, the instant kill is loved and hated by gamers everywhere.

Iron Sights

Games often use iron sights to define precision shooting with normal weapons.

Jump

It's arguably the one move that symbolizes the medium to those outside it. The ability to jump, be it onto building, onto platforms, or onto skulls, is one of the all time most important abilities ever put in a video game.

Kaiju

Giant monsters in the movies have always been a key source of inspiration for many games. From Godzilla to King Kong and Giant Enemy Crab, kaiju films have found themselves referenced or imitated.

Kill Stealing

Kill Stealing involves a player killing another player's target in order to gain his or her "prize". These include loot, experience points, a point score, etc.

Leveling Up

The process by which characters reach a new level, gain greater attributes, and learn more abilities. It usually involves earning enough experience points.

Light Up Crosshair

One of the smaller innovations in the gaming industry was making the player's targeting reticle change colours depending on the situation.

Military

Armed forces. The arm of government that deals with fighting wars and protecting a nation from outside harm

Military Uniform

All militaries have some kind of uniform.

Mirror Mode

A popular mode in racing games in which you drive the various courses mirrored (ex: a turn that used to be to the left is now to the right etc...)

Mutants

Nuclear war, frivolous dumping of toxic waste, forced evoluitonary virus; sometimes these things go horribly awry. These games all feature some variety of mutant life, formerly human or otherwise.

Non-Player Character

Characters controlled by the game for players to interact with, as opposed to player characters which are controlled by whomever is playing the game.

No Scope

Occurs when a player kills an enemy using a sniper rifle without the aid of the scope. Generally in FPS games, sniper rifles are not equipped with crosshairs, thus making this feat impressive.

Online

Games which allow players to interact with others over the internet.

PAX 2008

The 2008 Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) took place at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle, Washington on August 29-31.

Persistent Bullet Holes

Persistent bullet holes allows players to shoot holes into walls without them disappearing right away. This feature added realism to first person shooters, as well as the ability to draw smiley faces.

PlayStation Home Tie-In

These games, franchises, characters, or companies have some connection with PlayStation Home. They could have some related digital wares available, have their own Space, or even be playable.

PlayStation Network

The Online Service that the PLAYSTATION 3 uses as well as the PSP. It's a free service, that also features the social network PS Home.

PlayStation Trophies

Trophies are an incentive-based system for the completion of various objective in PlayStation 3 titles.

Portable Cover

From shields to car doors to entire vehicles, and even people, portable cover puts a unique twist on the cover systems commonly found in modern action games.

Profanity

Swearing, cursing, call it what you want. It is an expression of anger or frustration, in most cases. Can be game related or used by other players online.

Project Abraham

Project Abraham is part of the viral marketing campaign for Resistance 2. In respect to the story of the Resistance franchise, it is a secret operation by the US Government to discover a vaccine for the Chimeran virus.

Randomly Generated Maps

As the name implies, it occurs when a game has unpredictable, always different levels, created by the game itself on the fly. Largely used to evoke a sense a freshness in every play session, but often critisized by the overall lack of "human polish" presented.

Real-Time Combat

Combat where most or all combat actions taken by the player are performed immediately, as opposed to being entirely sequenced.

Regenerating Health

Regenerating health is a gameplay mechanic which automatically refills the players health bar after successfully escaping damage for a set amount of time. It is typically seen in Western RPGs and modern first-person shooters.

Respawn

When a player or NPC dies in a game, usually a multiplayer game, and then reappears back in the game, usually in a predetermined location or group of locations, and usually without loss of time in which the game is continuing on, this is called spawning, or respawning.

Saving the World

Many games feature a story which involves saving the world and its inhabitants, often single handedly.

Sea Monster

Sea monsters are sea-dwelling, mythical or legendary creatures, often believed to be of immense size.

Secondary weapons

When a game usually a shooter gives you a weapon to begin your mission with. Normally they are used infrequently but can be relied on when all options and or ammo are gone i.e. pistols, grenades or knives.

Shaved Head

A head that has had it's hair removed by a razor or other sharp object.

Silent Protagonists who talk in Sequels

Sometimes silent protagonists come to their senses in sequels or prequels and decide to freely speak their mind.

Single-entity Developer Credits

While most games' end credits differentiate whom did what and what position each person holds in the company, games with single-entity developer credits present the entire staff of the development house as an equal member of the team with an equal influence in the creation of the game. More often than not, the team is listed in alphabetical order.

Special Forces

Elite and specially trained/equipped military troops tasked with carrying out specific and dangerous/sensitive tasks beyond the remit of regular military personnel. Many games feature special forces soldiers or units as protagonists or enemies.

SpeedTree

SpeedTree is a software toolkit that generates realistic forests on the fly.

Squad

A squad is a group of military personnel who work together as a group. Popular in both single-player and multiplayer games, the other players within the squad can be either AI or other people.

Sticking

Sticking one refers to sticking someone with a form of grenade in either multiplayer or Single player. Usualy humility factor is quite high depending on area of stick.

Team Deathmatch

A Multiplayer game mode where two or more teams fight against each other to the death.

War

A series of organized conflicts carried on by force of arms, between any two or more nations or groups.War is accepted when a nation for example puts out their grounds on another nation grounds.

Weapon Slot Loadout

First seen in Halo: Combat Evolved, this style of gameplay helps manage balance in shooters by forcing players to choose between weapons
