Resistance: Fall of Man

Resistance: Fall of Man is a video game that consists of 8 releases

Two weeks have passed by already, feel like I just wrote up my last blog yesterday. Well I stopped myself from playing more Fallout 3 to finish up some more games. The first game I finished is one of the launch titles for the PS3, Resistance: Fall of Man. This is a game that most people Im guessing picked when the PS3 launch. The story is about this one man Nathan Hale that survived a attack from the Chimera. The Chimera is some virus that changes humans in to Chimera. I was thinking I was going to fight aliens but Im fighting humans, sounds like Blacksite. The graphs suck, it has that look like a low budget 360 game, reminds me of Hour of victory. Most of the cut senses are just pics, news papers and maps like a slide show.   All the enemies look the same and there are very few different types of enemies. The 1st level is the hardest part in the game, after that part you gain the ability to regain health. In the first level there is no healing pack or anything to heal you. In all the game is not that good and I wish I didn’t buy it, I hope Resistance 2 is not like this. I say pass on this game, there are better shoots on the PS3 like Killzone.

After finishing a PS3 game I went down a number and played on my PS2. In the Devil May Cry series I only played the 3rd game, I finally played and beaten the 1st Devil May Cry. The different between one and three are very little. Most of the sound has not changed. Game plays are the same, fighting move and a shooting button. Spending XP to get new moves and upgrade weapons are the same. The look of the game as improved; there are very few different kinds of enemies in one. You are mostly fighting off joker looking enemies, fighting them made me wonder where Jester is from three. The enemies look like him just with longer arms. The story is just basically an intro to Danta and his family history. It is a buy for any PS2 owner, now I just need to play two which I hear is the worst out of the three.

After I beat Devil may cry Game fly sent me X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now movie video games are mostly always bad but not this one. The game is like god of war with RPG leveling system in it. The is about Wolverine before he joins the X men, how he got the claws and what made him not remember anything from his past is answered in this game. The game looks great, very bloody and the locations look fine. Wolverine healing looks cool but are some time his shirt start to appears out of no where. When Wolverine gets hurt and has big wounds on him his white shirt is tear off from it. Over all if you are a X men fan this is a rent, a harder difficulty is unlocked after you beat the game but I didn’t want to play through it again at that time. The game took me only 11 hours to beat, if you want to buy it wait until its $20 or less.

Well it was a slow two week but the next two weeks will be crazy. Modern Warfare 2, Left for dead 2 and The Ballad of Gay Tony ( 4 new DLC) will be keeping me busy.

Note: I wrote this last Monday and forgot to post it until now.

As some of you may or may not know, I got a PS3 exactly one week ago.  In that week, I have had good times and sad times so far (the good times greatly outnumber the sad times).  I have purchased Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Killzone 2, Resistance: Fall of Man, Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted Drakes Fortune, Fat Princess, Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty, and Marvel Vs Capcom 2.  I think that this is a very good list of quality games for the PS3 and will keep me entertained for quite some time.  Below I am going to detail my experiance with two games that I have played the most, and what I like about them.

Is that a wrench in your pocket or you just happy to see me?
Is that a wrench in your pocket or you just happy to see me?
I have completed Tools of Destruction and I have to say that it is one of the best in the fantastic Ratchet and Clank series.  It was the first game that I popped into the blu-ray drive of my PS3, and I remember asking myself why 360 platformers could not be that colorful and good looking (Kameo was close).  I played this game almost non-stop from the time of purchase to the time that I completed the story.  The story was a hell of a lot more mature then previous entries in the series but still just as funny.  The best line ever was uttered by the Dread Pirate Captain Slag.  "Ye wouldn't begrudge a poor pirate his booty would ye?"  I laughed out loud at that line and at many other lines in this game.

Lets follow the blood trail. Whats the worst that could happen?

Killzone 2 is also an amazing game.  I have really only played the multiplayer portion of the game, but I must say, I'm hooked.  For all the haters of the game that some might say is just Halo in another universe, I have to tell people that Killzone is much more visceral and what halo SHOULD have been.  Its dirty, gritty, and has 32 player online with no graphical loss at all.  It is the best and most realistic looking console video game that has ever been released in my opinion.  My only real gripe with it is that the single player campaign sucks balls.  Thankfully I am really only playing it for multiplayer good times.  This game is graphic, and a very acurate portrayal of war in general (especially in Multiplayer with the changing objectives and such).

10 bucks I can jump it.
10 bucks I can jump it.

Now I have mentioned above that I have had some sad times with my PS3.  The sad time occured while I was playing Uncharted.  I'm maybe just under an hour into the game, and it locked up on me.  Complete and total freeze with no reason for it.  I almost cried when it happened because the last time that a game froze on me, it was an indicator of an impending RROD on my XBox (I have only had one RROD on my 360, but it happened before Microsoft implemented its current warrenty system).  I looked into the issue, and discovered that Uncharted is aparently having issues with Firmware 3.0.  I was so relieved that I found this out, but at the same time it makes me sad because it means that completing the game could become a chore (its been amazing so far though and I don't want it to be painful to play).

On the hole, I have throughly enjoyed my time with my PS3.  I cannot wait to complete the games that I have in my library so that I can expand it with even more quality titles.

I geuss I'm gonna start up a blog again, I figure that now is a good time since its been a year since I started and stopped a blog. Maybe I can make it past 3 or 4 entries this time ;)

Im going to talk about my very first impression of Resistance 2. I actually really enjoyed the first one, playing it co-op with my brother when we first opened our PS3 was a real blast. I really enjoyed a few of the ways it was different from other shooters that ièm used to. Like how every weapon has an alternate fire and you could carry every weapon in the game at once instead of 2 like other FPS's. I also liked the health system. Most shooters I've played use either a normal health bar, when in hits zero you die and it doesn't recharge. Or they use the most common system, screen turns red when you get hit, take cover then it recharges, Call of Duty style.

Resistance uses a hybrid of these 2 styles. The health bar consists of 4 parts. For example if you get shot and take 1 and a half bars of damage then half a bar will recharge but the other full bar will not. In other words every full part you lose will not recharge but if you only lose a portion of a part it will recharge. So the game gives you some regeneration but not too much.

As I said before I was quite fond of the health system and being able to hold a bunch of weapons at a time.
However for some dumbass reason they changed all this in Resistance 2. The health system works just like Call of Duty and you can only hold 2 weapons at once.
They took out alot of the stuff that makes the first one stand out in my mind.

They also completely changed the way the story is told. They ditched the more original way of narration and cool cutscenes for a standard through the eyes of the hero style. It just seems to me that made it more like Call of Duty 4 so they could try and sell more copies. I love Call of Duty by the way, I'm just really sad that they decided to change Resistance 2 so much from the first one.

I know they needed to add new things, which they did. From what I gathered from the menus and my brief time played this game: the rank system in multiplayer is really improved, there are alot of customization options as well and the overall scope of the game is way more epic. All great improvements in my opinion.

I also tried the new co-op mode where you choose from 3 classes. It actually seemed really neat. I played it split screen with my brother and for some reason it looked like absolute trash for a PS3 game. The textures and graphics were PS2 quality. Not sure what is wrong here because in single player the game looks just fine.

Please note that these are really early impressions. I played the co-op for about 5 minutes and played through the first level of the single player campaign.
I just wanted to express how disappointed i am that the changed some of my favorite things from the first game. However just because it's different doesn't mean it is bad at all. So far the single player mode seems plenty fun. Whenever I get the time I will finish Resistance 2 and maybe do a video or written review or another blog about it.

So I didn’t buy Resistance when it first came out because I played it round a mate’s house and thought it wasn’t worth a full £40 for what seemed like a mediocre game. Though this week I found it on Amazon for a mere £7.99 on the marketplace, so I thought that it would be worth that. And mostly that’s true.

Don’t get me wrong I love the ideas behind it. Mysterious virus breaks out in soviet Russia, an air of mystery around it. Then all of a sudden they launch a massive offensive against Europe and it is revealed that these are actually the Chimera. That sounds cool. But unfortunately the game suffers from the same ailment that infected the movie Jumper. It sounded great on paper, cool super powered teleporters being hunted by Samuel L Jackson, but the implementation of that created a bland, disappointing and uninteresting experience. Which is exactly what happened in Resistance.

The level design is unintuitive, the levels themselves are disjointed by heavy exposition in the cut scenes that feature a British chick explaining everything in the past tense which, ok it’s a rarely used story telling device, but there’s a reason no one uses it. It draws you out, removes any sense of immersion. One little tiny nit pick that I have with the campaign is that early on there’s a level where you’re captured by the chimera and put in a cell, and you just happen to still have your gun. If the chimera are that stupid, why the hell haven’t we won yet? In all fairness the campaign is ok, it’s not crazily fun, but it’s not boring either. I just found it especially bland and uninspired. There was no sense of atmosphere to it, which is why I’d almost wish that the campaign was a little shorter.

Though the redeeming feature for me is the multiplayer, and not the crazy interwebs multiplayer, though that’s mainly due to the fact that everyone who’s still playing it are crazy good. Though the greatest multiplayer is the 4 player split screen. Sitting down with four of your friends and turning off all weapons and use grenades only, you will have even more fun than low-grav gravity hammers on Halo 3. Mainly due to the fact that there’s a flame bomb grenade thing, it’s like that one they use at the end of Underworld 2 where it releases gas then PHOOM!, everything dies.

Really Resistance is an “eh” game, but for £7.99 it’s well worth it. Also a little hint don’t buy the platinum edition, look around a bit first for the original copy because they’re cheaper. For those who want to know where to buy it now, here are some links:

America: Amazon $19.34 or $11.99 on the marketplace

UK: Amazon Platinum: £18.08 Original on the Marketplace: £4.49

We all know the Nintendo Holy Trinity. For those that don't know, its the 3 main franchises that Nintendo is most known for and the reason for their continued success. Those three franchises are Super Mario, Metroid, and Zelda.

I would like to introduce what I feel is the Playstation Holy Trinity. Instead of franchises I'd like to recognise three developers that I feel have consistently given us so many fantastic and iconic games, and have been the backbone of the success of the Playstation from the PSX to the PS3. The three developers who make up the Playstation Holy Trinity are Sucker Punch, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog.

Naughty Dog.
I'm going to start with Naughty Dog because they are my favorite of the three. Naughty Dog started with the Crash Bandicoot trilogy on the PSX giving playstation owners a Mascot and a fantastic 3D platformer for a time when there were none to speak of, even Super Mario 64 was a month away when Crash Bandicoot was released. When the PS2 came around Naughty Dog developed a new IP for a new system, Jak and Daxter. The Jak games are by far some of my favorite action platformers of all time and hold up very well despite their age. Jak and Daxter 1,2 and 3 still have a home on my shelf. Uncharted: Drakes Fortune kicked off Naughty Dogs presence on the PS3 and quickly became a "killer app" for anyone deciding whether they want a PS3 or not.

Insomniac.
Insomniac started on the PSX with the Spyro the Dragon trilogy. Spyro was the playstation game everyone played and everyone has fond memories of, and in some cases was the first 3d platformer they had ever played. The dialog was always funny and the gameplay was always fun. On the PS2 Insomnic developed Ratchet and Clank series. It shared the fun and humour of Spyro, but with a slightly more mature attitude. Continuing with their exponential growth in maturity Insomniac developed Resistance series on the PS3 giving PS3 owners the thrill of "tea-bagging newbs" that was once only available to Halo owners. As well as continuing their Ratchet and Clank series with the R&C Future trilogy.

Sucker Punch.
Sucker Punch is the weakest of the three, only because they didn't get into the playstation until the PS2, but they definitely started strong with the Sly Cooper series, Sly 3 still being the closest thing you'll get to an Ocean's 11 videogame. They recently got in on the PS3 with the highly rated inFamous.

Though Killzone, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy may be the games everyone talks about. Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog and Insomnic have given us IP's that truly define the Playstation past present and future and for that I consider them my Playstation Holy Trinity.

This is of course just my opinion and feel free to disagree.

This week’s episode of Distributed Failure is an extra long E3 extravaganza featuring special guest Atheistium, who is a member of Destructoid’s UK podcast: The Podcastle. She was kind enough to lend her voice (and vagina) for a little E3 after thoughts special and we are extremely happy to accommodate both. You can follow her on Twitter, check out her writings at Consolemonster.com, or give her blog a visit at viera.nu!

We start off this show like any other with “What We’ve Been Playing”. We talk about Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Resistance: Fall of Man, Overlord II, the Uncharted 2 multi-player beta, and much more. We continuously stray off-topic, but eventually managed to get through “What We’ve Been Playing” and get down to business, the business that is “E-Trio”.

We began our E3 discussion with a breakdown of each of the Big 3’s press conferences and eventually choose a “winner”. We then talked about the surprising absences of E3, such as the absence of Rare and the lack of a PS3 Slim announcement. We follow that up with our best and worst moments/news from E3 and end it all with our game of the show.

We had a lot of fun recording this episode and we hope you enjoy listening to it. Once again I just want to thank Atheistium for joining us on this very fine day and wanted to let her know that she is always welcome to stop on over as a guest anytime. Just remember: You bring the dumpage and I’ll bring the sausage! Don't forget to rate/review us on iTunes!

This week's show is surrounded with sadness; Gus Yoo has bid farewell to Distributed Failure. He may come back down the road, but for the time being he will no longer be pooping on air for your listening pleasure. We're sure as hell going to miss him and hopefully he hasn't been scarred too deeply from chatting with us for all these weeks. Here's to you Gus Yoo, the man best known for his poo, you were one of a kind!

We start this week's show like every other show (big surprise?) with "What We've Been Playing" and discuss such games as Bionic Commando, inFamous, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, Resistance: Fall of Man, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Wheelman, and much more! We follow that up with some gaming news including the leaked trailer for "Project Trico", the news of Atlus bring Demon's Souls stateside, and more. We end the show with a tiny dump of sausage and can only think to plug my sausage of pixelation.

The show was a little "wack" this week due to all the crizzle-crap that went down, but it still turned out to be an alright episode. Stay tuned for a more upbeat episode next week...who knows, we may even have a special guest! I hope you enjoy the show and don't forget to rate us on iTunes! :)

Question for next week: What will you miss most about sir Gus Yoo?

ENTER THE KILLZONE FOR ONE OF THE PS3'S FINEST TITLES!

Hype can be a deadly uncontrollable disease to a videogame, it can ruin a games enjoyment within seconds and in today's tough financial times, destroy a whole development studio. As the gaming industry gets bigger and bigger each year, the expectation of gamers do to. Gamers expect more for their hard earned buck nowadays and already hype as killed off many a game in these past two years alone. Though one could argue that often, it's the developers themselves who hype their own titles up so much, that on occasion there bound to fall off the videogame cliff. This is a issue that's been surrounding the Playstation 3 exclusive First-Person Shooter Killzone 2 ever since Sony first showed off the now infamous CG trailer back at E3 2005. Those that can recall the famous 'Halo Killer' trademark that Sony placed upon the original Playstation 2 Killzone, will have also watched that CG trailer with a dash of caution. Now after five years in development, does Killzone 2 fail to live up to expectations or rise to the hype that as challenged it to be of the PS3's finest titles to date.

Like many gamers, Sony have walked with some caution when discussing Killzone 2. Despite it being a potential money making exclusive for the company, it's clear the've learnt their lessons from the original Killzone and have been limiting the power of their own special hype machine. For some this as been a odd choice for Sony to make, but it still makes perfect sense to me. If more deverlopers/distributors let their games do the talking, the videogame World would be a much better place for all. But onto the game itself, for most Killzone 2 as always been about the graphics. Developers Guerilla Games have reached high in recreating the same visual class as the CG trailers back in 05 and for that you have to great them great credit. One thing is for sure though, Killzone 2 is one of the best looking videogames of today and I includes PC titles in such a list. It's easily the best looking console game out there and for it to run aswell as it does, also goes to show that in the right hands. The PS3 can indeed be a powerful system, even if it does take five years to get it all working together. But of course videogames aren't totally about how they look, and thankfully Killzone 2 plays as great as it looks.

The Helghast are fierce opponents.
The Helghast are fierce opponents.
Though the Killzone Universe isn't as well known as say the Universe of Halo, it does offer some interesting twists and there is potential for a much deeper story to be told. In Killzone 2's single player game you play as Sgt. Tomas 'Sev' Sevchenko who is part of Alpha Squad, your fellow squad members become key figures to the overall game even if the story offerred isn't anything Oscar winning. Your squad varies in character from the foul mouthed Cpl. Shawn Natko to the somewhat aggravating Sgt. Rico Velasquez, the squad also includes Cpl. Dante Garza who is one of the more likable characters you'll interact with in Killzone 2's solid single campaign. I shall admit to growing a pure dislike to the character of Rico Velasquez, he is one of those gaming characters you'll love or eventually hate with passion, and sadly I count myself totally as a hater. This is partly because his dialogue can feel a little to 'All-American' and he never seems like a particular good leader to me, but these views are of course my own and have nothing to do with the game itself. But what was a little disappointing was the lack of story or lore within the game, even though the game as a solid if somewhat generic storyline I couldn't help but feel a much richer method of storytelling could have been used. As the Killzone Universe in itself seems like an interesting one. As 'Sev' your part of an ISA invasion of the Helghast homeworld of Helghan, as the ISA looks to finish off the Helghast for good. Those that played the original Killzone game on PS2 will know that it was the Helghast who attacked the homeworld of the ISA, so you have good motive for going on your Helghast killing rampage. Of course things are not that simple and you quickly realise it won't be as easy as your leaders told you it would be as the Helghast aren't ready for the ISA to simply walk into power.

If there is indeed one issue that lets the single player campaign down, it would have to be the real lack of story within the actual campaign. Yes things do occur and deaths happen, but you can't help but feel that certain story arcs were stamped on at the last minute and not everything you do makes that much sense. This is a bigger issue then it should be simply because the World created by Guerilla Games is honestly interesting and it would have been nice to learn more of the Helghast who are one of the most unique enemies I have come across for a good while. It's clear that the developers drew influences from the Soviet Union to the Nazi Regime and it all honestly works so well that you kind of wish you could experience things from their side of the wall. On the other hand, the ISA can feel a little generic, not entirely helped by some lackluster dialogue from time to time. It frustrated me that Killzone 2 had so much storytelling potentially but for the most part played it safe and hoped you'd just like the graphics and gameplay. It does feature some stunning moments but nothing heavily driven by the story, nothing like the thrills and enjoyment of Metal Gear Solid 4. But let's hope this is an issue resolved in future installments as I actually have more interest in the Universe and lore created by Guerilla Games then the fiction and lore found in the Halo franchise. So the single player campaign on ocassion suffers from the same generic FPS experience, but that isn't such a huge issue when you actually get to see what Killzone 2 as to offer as a whole package. Generally it plays brilliant, it will take you sometime to adjust to and the game does give you some sensitivity control options as Killzone 2's controls can actually feel heavy and slow. Though eventually most gamers will get use to the way it plays, just be prepared to feel a little strange when you return to Call of Duty 4 after spending sometime with Killzone 2. One large thing to note though, is how much better a shooter it feltcompared to Insomniac Games Resistance 2 which never sat confortably for me. The Sixaxis Dualshock controller seems to suit Killzone 2's slower gameplay better then the experience offered in the original Resistance and it's sequel.

So does Killzone 2 add anything worthy of great mention, well yes indeed it does. For most gamers 'cover' as been a very next generation game mechanic. I myself can only think of first seeing it used in Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter when the Xbox 360 first launched (though I maybe wrong). Now a cover system is a common sight in videogames, though not to often in first-person shooters. Yet Killzone 2 as somehow made them work, partly thanks to the games differculty which can drive you insane. Not because it's honestly that tough, but because the game features a poor method of health representation. It technically uses the now common regenerating health but the trouble lies in the way that Killzone 2 shows how much life you have or how close you are to death. Blood appears at the sides of the screen and eventually your world goes grey until finally you fall down dead, this technique works in theory though it's tough to really tell how far from death you are and on many occasions I was never clear on how my character was doing so I would go behind cover instantly after being hit once or twice. For some gamers, this will frustrate but it's always best to play it safe and take cover as often as you can. You won't get far in Killzone 2 if you go running into rooms filled with soldiers of the Helghast.

Cpl. Dante Garza, one of the more likeable Alpha Squad members.
Cpl. Dante Garza, one of the more likeable Alpha Squad members.
Weapons on first sight can feel somewhat generic, though after a while using them all you realise that they all have some depth and a number of specific weapons are honestly a blast to use. Your main key weapon is the ISA rifle which is a pleasure to fire, it's both precise and deadly. While other weapons such as the flamethrower and bolt gun are fun. The most interesting and overall enjoyable weapon as to be the electronic shock gun of the Helghast, this unlimited ammo beast is only playable for a short level in the game but there's a lot of enjoyment to be had with it. Though it's not quite the Half Life 2 gravity gun, it sure will please those looking some some depth in their Helghast murdering weapons. Sev can actually only hold one primary weapon at a time with a pistol as a safe guard, this isn't such a problem but it is a little frustrating when you eventually have to lose your trusty rifle and pick up a grenade launcher because you know you'll eventually be forced to use it. Though the design decision to be only allowed one primary weapon doesn't make great sense, you eventually adjust your play style or simply improve your pistol skills so that you'll never be without a solid weapon throughout the game, not to mention the fact that you can always use the Helghast's own rifles and varied weapons.

Killzone 2's single player campaign will last you a good 8-10 hours and they are indeed enjoyable ones. It's cover system does offer something new even though it's clearly not optimized and it plays well overall. It seems perfectly suited to the Sixaxis Dualshock controller and it's slower more patient pace is welcomed in an age where faster more insane gameplay is the norm in such a genre of videogames. But all in all what might keep you returning back to Killzone 2 is it's fantastic multiplayer mechanic which offers a slightly new twist on common modes that have been the heart of the FPS Multiplayer genre for almost all it's existence. For in Killzone 2's multiplayer component, you are set in one of the games many maps where you take part in the usual team deathmatch and capture the flag style modes. The actual twist is that such gameplay modes change within the actual match, so for five minutes you can be playing team deathmatch when suddenly your next looking to assassinate one of the opposite team members, then after another five minutes you could end up protecting certain locations on a map in the same style as the classic Battlefield games. These modes do vary but it's the simple fact that they interwine so well that makes the games multiplayer mode so fresh. Infact I suspect it will be as popular as Call of Duty 4, which is still the most played multiplayer game out there.

There is of course a little more to multiplayer, Killzone 2's multiplayer mode wouldn't be without a class system and the one on offer is both deep and quite unique in it's own form. Though you level up in the same vain as say Call of Duty 4, the leveling system feels a little more deeper and eventually you can unlock different badges (classes) that vary from Medic or Engineer to the unique Saboteur and Sniper which both come with some nice little additions to their arsenal. Most FPS fans will find a lot to like about Killzone 2's multiplayer mode, it runs well and looks as stunning as the single player campaign. There are a few minor issues but there so minor that there not really worth mentioning in this already long review. This mode in itself lives up to the hype it recieved while in beta and despite not including any form of free for all modes, the teamplay and overall experience is worth the full retail price alone. It's a mode you will be returning to again and again, even if you don't count yourself a great FPS player. Just be prepared to adjust to Killzone 2's slightly slower pace, especially if your just coming off Call of Duty 4.

So overall does Killzone 2 live up the years of hype? technically yes. Though it doesn't feel as massive a jump gameplay wise as it does graphically, there is still so much for any PS3 owner to fall in love with. The single player campaign is considerable fun even if it didn't offer the full experience I was hoping for and multiplayer is both thrilling and unique which is indeed special in a time when it's so easy for developers to rely on being generic. The game sounds brilliant, with some top voicework and it's hard to really heavily critise anything specific because so much as been done well. While the fanboys of this generation will still question the Playstation 3's power, it's clear that in the right hands it can be a beast of a machine that can easily pull off such smashing titles as Killzone 2. This is a PS3 must buy for all.

SCORE: 5 out of 5.
