Overview
On April 12th, 2010, departed heads of Infinity Ward - Jason West and Vince Zampella - announced their new studio, Respawn Entertainment, with Electronic Arts providing the seed capital to start the company. Zampella will be assuming the role of General Manager and West as President.
They have a publishing deal with EA Partners, and EA will have the right to publish the company's first game, along with potential sequels and spin-offs. Respawn Entertainment will still own and maintain control of their intellectual property, however.
They are currently in the process of hiring a team to work on an as of yet unannounced project. However, West has stated he expects their first project will be of a "huge, summer blockbuster" scale. He also added they would consider turning the company's games into comic books, movies, and other media.
First Game Reveal
On June 9th, 2011; during E3 2011, EA Games Label President Frank Gibeau confirmed that Respawn was working on a sci-fi shooter. There had been much rumor about the game being in the sci-fi genre after Respawn hired Iain McCaig who had previously worked on designing characters for Star Wars. Gibeau also told the press that the game would be released when there was an opening on the market. He told the press:
The idea is to have that rotation happen with Battlefield and Medal of Honor and keep it fresh so you don’t burn the teams down or over-annualize the product lines. Titles like Respawn – and I think the Insomniac title is a little bit more of an action game than a pure shooter – we’ll sprinkle those in where we see opportunistic gaps, either in a release schedule or in a genre standpoint.
