Aliens vs. Predator Review

2
  • X360

While there's still a certain charm to its interspecies play, AVP is plagued with issues across the board.

Marine shoots Alien, Alien eats Marine, Predator stands back and laughs about it.
Marine shoots Alien, Alien eats Marine, Predator stands back and laughs about it.
There's something conceptually terrific about the three-way dance that is Aliens vs. Predator, but Rebellion's rework of the formula--which has been around for well over 15 years now--flubs the execution in a lot of different ways. The franchise's class-based take on multiplayer combat still elicits a few thrilling moments, but the three single-player campaigns aren't any fun at all.

Aliens vs. Predator is all about the differences between the three playable factions. The Marines carry weapons, like the iconic Aliens pulse rifle and even more iconic Aliens motion detector, which blips out frequently enough to let you know that something's moving out there, but not often enough to serve as a direct map to your enemies. The aliens are a purely melee class that can crawl on walls, see well in the dark, and detect silhouettes of enemies through solid surfaces. Predators can cloak themselves, get two vision modes to help them see the other races, and are largely a melee class as well. But they can collect and use specific Predator weapons as they hunt. These weapons end up being especially devastating, but they're kept in check by low fire-rates and a finite amount of energy for your beam weapons.

A big part of the Alien campaign involves putting Facehuggers onto faces.
A big part of the Alien campaign involves putting Facehuggers onto faces.
So with two classes relying heavily on strikes, that melee combat needs to be pretty good for the game to work. But it doesn't fit with the action especially well, and the end result is a rock-paper-scissors-like system of strikes, blocking, and counters that feels out-of-place in the game's fiction and also isn't much fun to perform. The aliens end up feeling especially weak. These things are bred to rip out the throats of the opposition and claw them apart in the process. Standing still, holding down the block controls and waiting for your enemy to strike so you can counter just feels silly. These mechanics do, however, make AVP feel very different than your average first-person shooter, which is a nice reprieve from the standard rifle/shotgun/sniper/rockets gameplay that you've come to expect from the typical sci-fi first-person shooter. The game offers a variety of different multiplayer modes, too, but on the 360 version, it was often hard to find players. You may have to wait around for five or 10 minutes before collecting enough players to get a game started.

Of course, that doesn't forgive the game's single-player portion, which drags you through the same dull events from three different perspectives. At best, the instruction you get on the use of your class's tools makes it a passable tutorial for the multiplayer. At its worst, though, AVP contains multiple scripting bugs where things that were supposed to happen simply didn't, forcing me to restart at the most recent checkpoint and hope that the game would carry forward. Also, the AI can't pilot an alien very well at all, like it can't deal with the concept of running up walls. If there's a pillar between you and an alien, it'll run up the side of it and start twitching and spinning around. It gets its bearings after a few seconds, but it looks pretty terrible. It'll take around six or seven hours to work through all three campaigns on the default difficulty setting, but they're not really worth seeing through to their conclusions.

That's really the largest problem with Aliens vs. Predator. There's no one solid aspect of it to make up for the other, busted-up parts. You're left with the impression that the single-player was an afterthought and that multiplayer was the focus. But even the multiplayer is saddled with enough flaws to make this game missable.

ok well i may get flammed but thats ok wouldn't be the first time lol but this game surely deserves a higher score then TWO!!! wtf? at its worst its a 3 star game, but a lot of jeff was mentioning in the game i've not had a problem with, for example the AI controlling aliens, if theres a pillar between you and the alien  it simply tries to run up it? LMAO that would be funny as hell if i saw that, in my 15 hour experience with the PC! version, i've never experienced this, not a single time! they get that close they usually rip me in half !! This is the problem when you have multi-platform games that originally were made for one platform only....

I thought the storys were actually very good, like how you star each race as the alien marine or predator, was very well done, was really awesome escaping that room at the start of the alien campaine how can you not like that stuff? and the graphics are absolutely amazing!!

When you play as the marine, i found it to be scary as hell running through those corridors not knowing what the fuck is around the next corner! dind't anyone like that? like at all ?? I think far too many ppl sucked in by some REALLY mediocre games like borderlands and halo 2 and 3 which games like this, get compared to.

The only thing that i really do agree with jeff on this one, is the melee combat really is poor, the original was definitely far better at dealing with one shot kills or 1 blow kills all gameplay, this shoulda been looked into a bit more as there is a lot you could have done with the close quaters but feels some what of a hatch job just to add it in there because they can. When you do actually play as the alien, you really do die a bit too quick and i noticed that on the multiplayer demo on steam before the release.

I am an AvsP fan boy, but i was skeptical about the game before i played it, and im damn glad i got it, its got poor reviews all over the web. and i think most of it is totally un just. If ppl are more willing to fork out 60 bucks on a halo or crysis copy, go right ahead, you wont find anything that plays quite like this...

and my suggestion to ppl that haven't played it yet and are looking at these reviews and get turned away, give it a try first !!!  and use a pc....

Nice to see you didn't review this game with beer-goggles or to please the idiotic AvP fanboys. This game is such garbage, but it is somehow tolerated by the fanboys.

Not surprised at the short review for. Shallow Shallow game IMO.  As a game not much to talk about.

@Ispear76 (You should have a tag behind  your name that says "I think I'm cool because I play games with low scores", wait that's too long but anyway)

Fun is a subjective term. Everyone doesn't think watching sports is "fun", but I do and that's all that matters. Hey, someone could think your shirts purple when you thinks it's blue. Come one though, Jeff REVIEWS games. This game has  flaws that actually effect the fun for SOME people. That doesn't mean that you can't have fun with it. Also, Jeff wouldn't be doing his job as game game CRITIC if he overlooked flaws for the "fun".

I played the heck out of Lord of the Rings: Conquest online, but I didn't complain about bad reviews. I was having fun. I also realized that it did have flaws. Take those rose colored glasses off.

And yes IGN (7/10 from them), Gamespot, and Giantbomb (4/10 from them) all review games, good for you that you noticed.

@ShadowDoGG: Well, I only played the Predator campaign and the first few missions of the Marine campaign, and enjoyed it. I've taken a break from the game and have been playing other games recently. But, I really did like the Predator campaign... I honestly can't tell the difference as to why a game like Halo is considered great and why AvP would be considered bad. I wouldn't buy a game like Call of Duty Modern Warfare, either. To me, all those games are overrated. I'd rather playing games like AvP, for the Xbox 360, or even the Jaguar version.

@lspear76:  Sorry but this game truly is terrible. I know what your saying about GTA4 in particular, people do go on the paddywagon whereas I thought Saints Row 2 was a suprising better version of GTA4. Main problem I find with this game is the major headache you get from playing it for only 5 minutes

@Danda: All of those game review sites are terrible... they're all mainstream. If you only buy the games they rate 10's, your game collection would have no flavor at all. I give AvP a solid 4 out of 5 stars. I give GTA4 a 2 out of 5. I've been playing games since 1982. Who are you gonna believe?

This is not a two star game. I'll tell you what, you can keep playing overrated games like Mass Effect 2, Bioshock/Bioshock 2, Grand Theft Auto 4, and I'll play a game that's fun like AvP. If you would just buy those mainstream games that get 10's on every site, but are overrated and vanilla, your game collection would be pretty weak. IGN - Gamespot - Giant Bomb... they're all the same.

Ever played MW2? Commando-lightweight... tac'knife. At least AvP 'one button kills'  require time to execute and usually a position behind the target. Any player who uses this method will stand playing with their food for several seconds. Even a player hosting the match is vulnerable.

My biggest complaint that it feels more like a half step backward. AvP2 beats this game in the areas that mattered most to me, weapon selection and class selection. This game is better than AvP1 but it seems like they just threw out what they had already improved on and just made an average shooter in an above average setting.

It shows you how fucking stupid it is for Sega cancelling Obsidian's Aliens RPG.  They always bet on the wrong horse so it wouldn't surprise me if Sega went bankrupt in the near future.  That game probably would have got 4 stars at least.

Achievements for this game look insane.  Especially when 6 months from now, might not be able to find anyone online in order to get that sacred s-rank.

Actually really enjoy this game.  Singleplayer is great for AvP fans because you get to live the dream and own fools as the predator and alien. Multiplayer is EPIC, though, and that's where I think he went wrong in this review.  Infestation has yet to cease to be fun and always has great moments.  Species TDM is great.  And the MP maps are really detailed and offer something for each species.  I wonder how much multiplayer Jeff actually played.

Wake up, kids.

1Up, Gamespy, Gamespot, GameRevolution and Eurogamer agree: this game sucks (you can check the reviews from Metacritic). I know that you really, really want this game to be awesome and that many of you decided that it would be awesome even before they started programming it, but if you rush a game into production and your previous credits are Shellshock 2 and Rogue Warrior, well... That's what you get: a cheap-ass remake of the 1999 game.

Admit it: if there were no Aliens or Predators in the game, you wouldn't be caught dead playing it.

The game isnt perfect,  but it is a solid 7/10.

That said, if there are plans for a sequel, let monolith handle it.  This game is decent enough but  unfortunately it is the best thing Rebellion has ever done and I dont think they have it in them to really make the improvements that are needed.

Monolith's take on the series with AvP2 is still probably the best game in the series.

Judging by his quicklook comments and the general attitudes of the gaming media who mostly grew up on consoles I would bet he would insist there are no significant differences and that the console versions are better because they are a streamlined experience.

It sucks too, because a lot of games recently have been a remarkably better experience on PC versus console and most review sites review the Xbox version and then walk away.  Risen, Darkest of Days, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Dragon Age, ME2, and now AvP.  We're finally back in that period at the end of a console cycle where the PC really pulls ahead.

In spite of all the flaws, I feel like I want to support this game if only because it is something a little bit different.  I'm also a big Aliens fanboy.  Watching James Cameron's movie in the theater when I was 9 years old and being scared shitless.  Ah the memories...  AvP seems to nail down the atmosphere and that's almost all I really need at this point.

Your review was harsh, unapologetic, and a hell of a good read.  No one said its an easy job to review games fairly and I really appreciate the honesty I get from this site.  I'll definately pass on buying this, though I kinda figured that out after trying the demo.  I still might rent it but its way down on the list.  Looking forward to more of your writing sir.  Thanks for the informative review and keep up the good work.

Jeff, have you played the PC release?  I think it's superior to the 360 version.

The controls feel better, especially as an alien.   Aiming with a mouse is just better than sticks.

The graphics are no doubt better with decent hardware.  With an ATI 5890 your mind will be blown in DX11.  But with my Geforce 250 I still get spectacular results running DX10.   Not to mention the framerate is a smooth 60fps and the graphics are much more crisp.  Better lighting as well.

As far as combat goes, I'm not sure if you fully understand how it works, based off what you wrote.  A blocking opponent  can be shot if you have weapons or you use a heavy attack to break through the block.  A heavy attack is telegraphed for Alien and Predator, which is easy to recognize, and you can interrupt with a light attack or a focus light attack.  After hitting someone with a focus attack, you can grab them for a trophy kill, but if they have enough health so that it wouldn't kill them, they can break out of the grab by mashing buttons and take no damage.  After breaking out of a trophy kill grab, the two opponents are back to square one and the strategy begins again.  Do you focus attack, or heavy?  Do you block and wait to see what they do and counter that appropriately?

I think the melee combat is done well for a FPS, and the depth really adds to the tension no matter what race you play.  The biggest drawback is the conga line of stealth kills, but if you're smart,  you won't get into that situation.  Never do a stealth or trophy kill in an area with opponents nearby :)

The 360 and PS3 versions are inferior to PC, but that doesn't make up for the lackluster SP campaigns.  But MP is where this game is at, and it shines on PC.  IMO.

The review was fair and justified. The game simply didn't impress Jeff as a game.  You have no justification to call his review poorly written just because you don't agree with his opinion. You can have your opinion that you enjoyed the game far more than he did, but you have no right to dismiss his opinion just because he didn't find the game fun. "

I didn't call it poorly written because I disagree with it, I called it poorly written because I thought it was poorly written and not at all informative.

Three replies to me in this thread and they all assume I just can't understand a difference in opinion.  I do understand it, but sadly the reviewers opinion was also poorly written, not very substantiated with example or fact, and most importantly not really informative to the reader.  It's three paragraphs with some rambling about minor issues and then a "blah" at the end, basically.  It is not a well done review, period, whether it was good or bad.  If it was 5 stars in the same format with the same effort put into it I would still say it was a bad review.

The end point is that this review is a symbol for a major problem in the gaming media, which is that games which have smaller marketing and development budgets, which are not AAA OMG releases, are given tremendously less attention and a lot less leeway in reviews.  Something like Call of Duty gets all its problems ignored or swept aside in a brief sentence whereas some minor issues in AvP become game killing bugs and a 2 star review.  Gamespot and IGN were just as bad, knocking the game for being a repetitive shooter we have seen before, as if Halo 3 and Modern Warfare 2 are not.

In the movie industry well made films without a budget are treated well and given ample media coverage on dedicated movie websites, but in the games industry they are almost treated like the crap Gerstman has to wade through before he gets to play Gears of War 5.  It's annoying to people like me who don't care about AAA games and just like fun games that nail their concept.  AVP3 is a game that, especially in its marine campaign, nails its concept like crazy.  Everyone on my forums who has actually played the marine campaign LOVES it, just flat-out LOVES it, because it feels like the movie Aliens in FPS form in a way that is damn near the best execution you could ask for on that front.

I honestly dont think it's that bad. I'm enjoying the single player but the biggest problem with it is that its far to short, the original on the PC (by the same company - and incidently available for cheapness on steam) felt like a multipack of three full games.
This one... feels like a 1 short game divided into three. I had the Alien mission done in less than a couple of hours, which sucked as it's the one I was most looking forward to.
I'll get through the other campains this weekend, along with some Multiplayer action - though 6 maps is seriously stingey for a game that seems to pin its hopes on multiplayer.
Enjoyable but lacking substance / longevity.
i'd give it a 7/10 or a 3.5 out of 5 (being a huge fan of the good films and the 1st game helps).

I only played the demo so I dont know much about singleplayer.
But the demo was kinda bad, I had to wait 10 minutes to get a game started and then I had to listen to guys breathing on the mic for 30 secs. And the game wasn't very good either, the controls were kinda wierd, and as Jeff said it was a lot like rock, paper ,scissors.
But I see a lot of different oppinions about this game, my friend likes it a lot and also theres a lot of guys here like me that dont really like it.  Its all kinda gay, I played a lot of crappier games, but also there are too much great games atm for me to be waisting time on this.

@StingingVelvet: A review is simply an opinion. They can be short or long, and they can be selective in what they choose to mention and what they omit. These were Jeff's impressions of the game.

Your impressions maybe quite different, as they appear to be. For instance, just because you didn't encounter any bugs doesn't mean they don't exist, but in your experience you didn't come across them, so you're bound not to be impacted negatively on that front. You felt that the game nails the feel of the movies, but Jeff either didn't think the same or that didn't come across as important enough to mention, for him.

What we are looking at here is a difference of opinion, and it's not necessarily something you can argue against.

Fair enough, the campaign has its faults, and it's technically a buggy and there are issues with the matchmaking.

I still really like this game, I've enjoyed what I've played of the campaign so far and the multi player is a lot of fun when you get into it.

I think that Monolith could have done a better job to be honest, as AvP2 featured more maps, classes and a tighter campaign.

Jesus Christ, all these people saying that Jeff didn't 'get' the game-have you seen the reviews out there? Half the reviewers in the world haven't 'got' this game. Congratulations people for having the ability to 'get' this game, but no amount of words will be able to convince somebody who doesn't that this game is very good.
Doesn't anybody understand that this game is a love-it-or-hate-it game yet? It seems pretty obvious from these scores, doesn't it?

(The spoiler warning above has the positive scores, whilst the spoiler warning below has the negative scores)

Obviously this game hasn't been made for everyone. You guys trying to convince us won't work, and people saying it is a 'disappointing review' should check up the other ones. Somebody saying that the review was too short-it covered everything that you really needed to know about this game which were causes for the low score. Anyway, I still might get this game-Jeff does not rule over us with his mighty scores, does he? It's just nice to know his indication, which I have found to be, most of the time, correct.

It's not much of a review, was my point.  Short and not really informative, and his only real singleplayer complaint is alien AI which from my experience is not even really true of the game.

How about talking about how it NAILS the feel of the movie?  How if you want to play an interactive version of Aliens the marine campaign is just about perfect for that?  I mean what else do people want from this game?  What could it have done differently other than NOT being an Aliens game, which is exactly what it needed to be?

I don't get how this game gets a 2 and a game like Modern Warfare 2, which is repetitive, not original what-so-ever and has enemy AI that is extremely simple, gets a 5.  I just do not understand that at all, sorry.

The always condescending know-it-all talks about reputation. Cute.

As for the review - I expected this much. I am more interested in the single-player-campaign, which seems to be pretty bad and short. Doesn't matter anyway, since this game is banned in Germany (unreleased, actually) and I don't feel like importing mediocrity.

I don't see the problem with this game at all, it's fantastic, the graphics are great and the Alien controls are how it must be. I can't imagine easier controls without ruining the experience. The Alien must be fast, and run around walls, if your brain can't handle that, you should not play as an alien.

In the online I feel that as an alien you shouldn't be running and fighing like you would with a human, I think it's much more fun to attack from the the dark walls and ceiling.

I go to this site for Jeff's opinion; I got Jeff's opinion. I also don't come here for large, sprawling walls of text, so a short review is always welcome.

I, personally, quite liked the multiplayer demo, so I will probably buy this game when its price gets slashed.

Completely disagree, this review is also terrible and not well written.

I agree more with the 7-8 reviews this game is getting elsewhere such as at gametrailers.  The campaigns are not perfect but they are not bad either, and Rebellion NAILED the feel and tone of the films and it comes across well.  If you loved Aliens and want to play a game based on it I can't imagine being anything but satisfied with the singleplayer of this game.

Very dissapointing review.

Wow shame Jeff didn't 'get' this game at all, my respect for his reviewing skillz have decreased alot yo. The multiplayer is a blast and it's clear from this review that you didn't really know what was going on or you just didn't bother try simply because it wasn't CoD or some other generic army shooter. Oh and "The aliens end up feeling especially weak" is a line that especially cracked me up...but dude clearly you don't know how to play this game but I think if you played it a bit more you must learn eventually as it's not a hard concept to grasp or anything.

I say Jeff should play the game more and re write the review, if not for us then for his reputation as a solid reviewer..

Strange man, the demo seemed OKAY, judging from the feel of the game.

GT gave it a 7.7.
