Dead Nation Review

2
  • PS3N

Zombies or not, Housemarque's latest dual-joystick effort doesn't come close to fulfilling its potential.

This is atypically bright for Dead Nation.
This is atypically bright for Dead Nation.
Despite having a strong feeling that the zombie video game had already been more or less perfected over a year ago, I was ready to jump into and enjoy Housemarque's new dual-joystick PSN zombie shooter Dead Nation. After all, these are the guys behind Super Stardust HD. If anyone knows dual-joystick shooting, it's them, right? But Dead Nation's awkward mechanics and dim visual style feel at odds with the twitchy, fast-paced gameplay inherent to the genre, and the lackluster online mode leaves an awful lot to be desired too.

The disappointing part is that Dead Nation sounded like it should have been great. Your 15 bucks gets you 10 mildly story-driven levels full of monsters to shoot, and there's a light progression mechanic where your performance earns you gold that you can cash in to upgrade weapons ranging from a shotgun and rocket launcher to a flamethrower, blade-hurler, and electro-zap something or other. You can play those 10 levels by yourself, or with a friend in local or online co-op. Everyone with me so far?

The core problem is the way the game plays. From the get-go, Dead Nation's shooting felt off to me, and even as I upgraded my gear, it never got more enjoyable as the overly long campaign wore on. The camera is pulled further out from the action than I would have liked, making your targets small and relatively hard to aim at (especially since only the default rifle gets a laser sight). The aiming is a little squirrelly anyway, combining with the small targets to make the game feel less precise than the great dual-joystick shooters of the last few years. And that default rifle is the only gun with unlimited ammo, so you tend to rely on it a lot--but it's a single-shot-single-button-press weapon, so my index finger felt like it was just about ready to fall off by the end of the game.

The story between missions is paper-thin.
The story between missions is paper-thin.
Worse, none of the levels are what I would call "well-lit," and some areas are downright pitch black. You've got a flashlight that lets you see what's directly in front of you, but even in the best cases, there are often enemies coming right at you that you can barely see. Hiding the monsters and the scenery from you is a central tenet of the game's design, but dual-joystick shooters are all about brightly colored entities moving in obvious contrast to the background. That contrast is necessary so you can subconsciously track the objects moving around your peripheral vision, because everything is moving too fast for you to stop and scrutinize every entity directly. The action doesn't move any slower in Dead Nation than in other shooters; it's just harder to see.

If the core shooting was more fun to play, the relative lack of variety in Dead Nation's campaign levels would be easier to cope with. The vast majority of the game is composed of same-looking city streets and generic urban areas, with cars strewn all over the place. Admittedly, the cars have real strategic value since you can shoot them to set off their alarms, which attracts the horde until the car explodes, just like in Left 4 Dead. Actually, most of this game feels... just like Left 4 Dead. Among the zombie lineup there are direct equivalents of the boomer, spitter, and tank, and you'll find yourself in familiar locations like a hospital and a carnival, in the latter shooting zombie clowns. This stuff has been done before.

 ACK ZOMBIES
 ACK ZOMBIES
The game is more fun in two-player co-op than it is by yourself, largely because the level design and monster distribution make it really hard while you're playing solo to put your back against a wall and defend yourself without getting surrounded. With a friend onboard you can naturally watch each other's backs, making this a much less frequent occurrence. But you'd be best off playing with that friend on the couch with you. Getting into an online game isn't a problem, but when I played online, there was enough lag even as the host to make the game feel noticeably less responsive than it does offline. Also, when you're playing online, you can't talk to your partner because the game currently has no voice chat. Housemarque promises the feature will be along shortly in an upcoming patch, but for an online action game to ship without voice chat one month shy of 2011 is damn near unforgivable at this point.

At least Dead Nation looks great. That lighting that impacted the quality of the action for me does look nice and moody, and there are some great physics that send zombie bodies flying right at the camera when you set off a big explosion. But it doesn't matter how slick a game like this looks if the action isn't on point. Housemarque has proven in the past it clearly has the chops to make great shooters, but it doesn't feel like that skill was fully brought to bear on this one.

Fable 3 and Gran Turismo 5 both got 3/5, both reviewers stating that the core of the game was fun but the trappings around the core gameplay bring the score down. You also seem to forget that there aren't exactly a buttload of PS3 exclusives being released right now, so let me run down their reviews:

  • Dead Nation - 2/5 stars
  • Gran Turismo 5 - 3/5 stars
  • Sports Champions - 4/5 stars
  • ModNation Racers - 4/5 stars
  • 3D Dot Game Heroes - 3/5 stars
  • God of War 3 - 4/5 stars
  • Heavy Rain - 4/5 stars
  • MAG - 4/5 stars
  • God of War Collection - 4/5 stars
  • Buzz! Quiz World - 3/5 stars (alright, I see an anti-PS3 conspiracy there)
  • Uncharted 2 - 5/5 stars, frikken GAME OF THE YEAR 2009
  • Average: 3.7/5 stars

Xbox 360 exclusives:

  • Kinect Sports - 4/5 stars
  • Dance Central - 4/5 stars
  • Kinect Adventures! - 3/5 stars
  • Fable 3 - 3/5 stars
  • Halo: Reach - 4/5 stars (boy, he showed it to PS3 fans.)
  • Crackdown 2 - 3/5 stars
  • Alan Wake - 4/5 stars
  • Metro 2033 - 3/5 stars (same reviewer as GT5, big 360 preference, eh?)
  • Mass Effect 2 - 5/5 stars
  • Halo 3: ODST - 4/5 stars (I added the big PS3 game of last year, this is the big 360 game)
  • Average: 3.7/5 stars

There.

"
Metro 2033 isn't a xbox360 exclusive.
And console wars are stupid because the PC is the best platform.

Sounds like the game gets tedious with either the dim lighting or lack of even that I'm sure it was a game mechanic as Vinny said, but that doesn't make it good, though I'm sure it was intended to be. And of course it just wasn't the lighting, but distance from the action and what-not also. It did look awkward to me, but it also looked like it could be fun.

@DG991:

You're absolutely right, my apologies. That still only brings the average to 3.7777777 or 3.8 if you want to round up. Still a very tight race.

And yes, this is all very stupid, as is saying the PC is the greatest. Why say that? Why not just enjoy the games you have and be happy that other people are having fun playing their games? I just sold my PS3 to a coworker because of hard times, which leaves me with a PC and 360. I was sad to let it go, but I'm happy she's having so much fun with it and Metal Gear Solid 4, and I'm not going to get mad if someone reviews a game I really like on the 360 lower, or if Cataclysm gets a 1/5.

Even though Dead Nation got a 2/5, I'm happy that there are people out there having fun with it, because that's what this all means. I'm not angry that Brad didn't like it, I'm more bummed that he had to play a game he didn't enjoy. Same with GT5. I took Dave's review to mean that it's not for everybody, but there are certainly people out there having loads of fun with it.

Give up your bias, give up your throne and send your high horse to pasture. You're a gamer, just like us, whether you like that label or not. We're here to have fun, not to fight over who has the better piece of hardware.

Honestly Giantbomb shouldn't review games they hate. We all know they are sick of zombie games. its like going into something you know your gonna hate. it has no chance. I'm not saying give it a 5, I just don't think they should review games they don't like. Am I wrong?

Yes, you're wrong.

They've said before that they review games that they want to play and that they believe their audience wants to know about. Lots of people want to know about Dead Nation. I, like many other, wanted to know their opinion about the game - I don't care if they're sick of zombies.

And for the record, the only one that's shown pure disinterested in Zombie games of late is Jeff, not Brad.

I agree with Brad's review, I was really looking foward to the game but all the problems that Brad stated in his review are the same problems I had with it. I wasn't having as much fun with it as I thought I would. I found that after awhile I was just forcing myself to complete a level.

It was fun for awhile but then it just frustrating. Just seems like this is the type of game I would complete in pieces. Like a level a day.

Great review Brad.

should a man that hates video games, and sucks at the majority of games he plays.  who also craps on a game that has nothing wrong with it because he can't simply figure it out himself really review games.  he is a internet personality now, and it's enjoyable to hear him talk about starcraft and watch him play.  but reviews should be taken out of his hands.

Personally, I'm having fun with the game.  It can be frustrating at times, for sure, and you really do need to play in a completely dark room (but hey, it's zombies so I'd have done that anyway) to make up for how dark it is without adjusting the gamma, and it can be goddamned hard single player, but it's still pretty fun.  I like the light RPG elements of armor and weapon upgrades, and the stat-tracking of competing countries is a pretty cool idea.

That said, Brad is, of course, welcome to his own opinion.

I enjoyed the game for what its worth. It reminds me a great deal of Hunter: The Reckoning and its sequel, which I have fond memories of for some reason. Its not Alien Swarm levels of quality (to reference a more recent game) but it can still be enjoyable.

Lighting in this is meant to be oppressive, even working against your character. Its the enemy you can't shoot. But yeah, it is pretty poorly done considering how far out the camera can zoom. Spent several minutes when going through a level last night just beating and shooting every street sign and newspaper vendor because they could charge at any second!

A game shouldn't be this dark in the first place if it's forcing the player to change their settings to see/play the game properly. There's Dark a la Left 4 Dead where you have the atmosphere but can still see things relatively easy and then there DARK like Doom 3 where the game literally blinds the player in a half assed attempt to create a scary environment.

I don't agree with the review, and am liking the game a lot. The lighting is indeed a mechanic as the flashlight is supposed to be used to spot zombies. Still, just another opinion. This game rocks, don't let the review stop you from checking it out!

Do you see what I'm doing right now?  Do you see?  No, of course you don't.  You can't see me because you're reading this text posted on a forum on the internet.  If you could see me, we would be in a discussion face to face.  But if you could see me, if you could see my face as I type this, you would see that it is filled with contempt and disappointment for your absurd, ill-informed rant.  It is comments like yours that validate the existence of facepalm image macros.

I hope you're happy with yourself.

this game is far better than the review.
please i urge you to give this game a chance.
it's a gem. just look at the metascore.
although i am a huge huge fan of giant bomb, i listen to the podcast, follow the site, i think this review score is really not in line with the game.
the game is on purpose little dark. it's not a failure, it's for the atmosphere and to make it a little bit harder.
i give it 4.5 and loving every minute of it.

"Zombies or not, Housemarque's latest dual-joystick effort doesn't come close to fulfilling its potential. " Yet, i bought the game the day it came out, and i'm still playing it everyday. If anyone has doubts about buying it or not, just play in some friends house. The game, is not a AWESOME game, or a GOTY game, but it really is entertaining. It's easy to play, graphics are GREAT, sound is also good, I'm playing my 2nd playthrough, on a higher difficulty, and i'm sure i want to get to UNDEAD difficulty. Co-op is great, online could be greater if they had voice chat (actually, housemarque is working on it), WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM A FUCKING GAME BRAD? If you care about it being similar to left 4 dead, go play left 4 dead again and again and again... if you think the light is too dark, just increase gama in the OPTIONS, that's the reason gama correction is there. You think is hard to aim without a laser sight? what the fuck is the flashlight doing there with the other weapons? just imagine a straight line in the middle of the flashlight, it turns out, it's pretty simple to aim!
If the game cost 50 bucks, ok, 2 stars would fit straight, but for a 15 bucks game... I couldn't ask much more. It's great, :)

" These reviews have become fucking jokes. I've been playing Dead Nation for the past 2 days and loving every second of it.  No, let's just shit on another PS3 exclusive. You heard it here first. Uncharted 3: 2/5 "It was too much like the previous Uncharted games."  Vinny even said in the quick look that he felt the lighting was meant to be a mechanic. WHICH IT IS.  You people really need to go back to the drawing board. That is, until Halo 24327 comes out and gets a 5/5. "
Uncharted 2 was their GOTY last year and Halo Reach got a 4/5 with them claiming the formula was growing stale...

Seriously, grow up. Most game reviewers don't care if a game's on PS3 or 360, it shouldn't matter as long as the game is good.

Very surprised by the review score considering the Quick Look was pretty complimentary. I played this game a lot and really enjoyed it. One of the criticisms in the review was "it's too dark", though surely that can be a simple matter of a brightness change on their TV or a gamma correction in-game?

I don't agree with Brad's opinion as this game is more of a great score chaser than a zombie game. He could give it a 1/5 and that doesn't change how much I like that game.

This game is fun, I don't think it deserves such a low score. Is it perfect? No but its not a bad game at all. My Girlfriend and I enjoy the game a lot. We beat it once and went right back in to play at the harder difficulty.

This is brads opinion and I just don't agree with it.

@onarum:  I was worried that their chummyness with Johnny V would somehow influence the final review score, so 3/5 sounded about right. Anything more and alarm bells would have rattled in my braincase.

Trashed? He said "it is as in the middle as it could be". And, i'm not sure if you know this but 3 is directly in the middle of a 5-star scale.

I disagree with the reasoning behind Brads low score.
My wife and I have been playing this and neither of us have has a problem with poor or imprecise controls. We haven't completed the game fully, yet, but we have played for a few hours. I didn't even realise that my shotgun didn't have a lazer sight until I read that... which is to say, I've never had a problem hitting my targets with it, or the SMG. There are no lazer or flashlight equivalents at all in most twin stick shooters...  you push in the direction you want to shoot, and your character aims there, much like in this game.

We own a 42" LCD and I found the camera to be a great distance from the action. It's close enough to make out details, yet far enough to let me plan a route through the enemies/environments.
Which leads to the darkness of the game. Yes, the game has dark areas... which is why your character has a flashlight/flares. I only turned my gamma up in the options a single notch, and it was plenty bright enough, while still keeping the AWESOME atmosphere. (Seriously, the game has some of the best lighting/atmosphere I've seen in recent games). The darkness is there purposely.
I find is strange that in one paragraph Brad talks about how derivative it is of other zombie shooters (which I won't deny, it is in places) but in another he criticized it for not being more like every other twin stick shooter. Not every twin stick shooter needs or should have brightly colored enemies which are easily visible. This game gives you the tools to combat the darkness (which, again, can be adjusted in the options if your TV's settings aren't correctly adjusted).
You have a flashlight, environmental lights, flares, and your SPRINT button, which is essential to use in this game (much like the boost was in Stardust) You can sprint to avoid damage in this. Sprint and plow right through zombies, etc. Use it.

Not to mention, in the particularly dark areas, you actually see the silhouettes of the zombies in the darkness (again, assuming your tv is calibrated halfway decently).  The zombies are never completely invisible. They aren't brightly lit like a Geometry Wars enemy, but they are visible.

It disheartens me to see so many people seemingly writing this really good game off because of this one bad review. I don't want to say Brad is wrong, because it's his opinion... but a review is more than just some one's opinion... it's a measurement of a games worth to a lot of people, and I feel this is a gross misrepresentation of this games worth.
Also, I can't stop thinking about how Brad didn't know how to DRIFT in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit! He didn't like the game because he couldn't figure out how to drift... for people who aren't aware... you drift by tapping the break while turning... like EVERY OTHER RACING GAME EVER MADE. Sorry, I know it's unrelated, but it really makes me question Brad as a gamer! That's like not being able to figure out how to get past a title screen (Press Start... the same way you get past every non-Wii title screen).

I respect the reviews at GiantBomb but I couldn't disagree more with this one. I love both L4D 1 & 2 and this is the perfect arcadey zombie shoot-em up. For me this game is at least a 4/5; it's an absolute blast either alone or with another person.

The game has a great atmospheric nature due to the low lighting, it adds tension and is a game mechanic, this was intended by the developers. This is a game feature, I have not had to change any settings on my TV, however I have a decent TV that can handle the black this game has to offer. If your TV is not very good, an older LCD with a terrible backlight then that's not down to the developers, they have added in a gamma control to compensate for that.

Bummer. Might check it out in case of price drop though, since it seems like something I might enjoy.

Agreed, people just look at a score and write off the game immediately. The game is great and this is one of the only reviews I really disagree with, I have never had any problems with lighting either.
This is probably one of my top 3 favorite PSN games so far.
