Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes Review

4
  • XBGS

Let me be clear: this game might contain too much crazy to be any fun for players who aren't already into it.

In some cases, all six characters might be on the screen at the same time.
In some cases, all six characters might be on the screen at the same time.
The 2009 digital re-release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a no-nonsense version of a beloved fighting game. It's the same game you may have played in arcades or on the Dreamcast back in 2000, but now it has online play. Nicely functional online play, I might add. Also, it sidesteps all of the character-unlocking steps you had to take in previous versions of the game by giving you everything there is to get, right off the bat. It doesn't redraw the graphics and it doesn't rebalance the gameplay. If you love Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and you want to play it online, this is a good value at $15.00.

Of course, if you're not already familiar with the game, you'll probably want to know a bit more about this Marvel and Capcom thing. As the name indicates, this game brings together characters from the Marvel Comics universe and characters from Capcom's lengthy history in the world of video gaming. This 2D fighter is a three-on-three tag battle game that follows in the footsteps of Capcom's previous Versus games. The Versus games are differentiated from the company's other 2D fighters by being... totally crazy. While it starts with the basics of Street Fighter at its core, it quickly goes off the rails in ways you may find amazing or totally baffling. Stoic, measured Ryu can now throw fireballs as tall as he is, and he can throw them in the air. In fact, most moves can be done in the air, and everyone can jump something like twice the height of the screen.

The super moves are ridiculous, screen-filling maneuvers that can be chained together with the other characters in your party. Combos numbering in the hundreds are fairly common, and combos numbering in the thousands are certainly possible, too. It's kind of a lot to take in, and if you aren't up on it, the game can get a little overwhelming. Heck, even the character select screen can be hard to deal with when you're first getting started. With 56 characters to choose from, you'll have plenty of dudes to sift through as you figure out your ideal team. But let me be clear: this game might contain too much crazy to be any fun for players who aren't already into it. At the very least, new players should strive to find other groups of new players to fight against, because playing against seasoned players only results in frustration of the "well I'm just going to set my controller down while you finish this combo" variety.

She's a member of STARS!
She's a member of STARS!
As far as modes go, it has the standard arcade mode and a training mode, but multiplayer is, of course, where you'll find the real action. You can play ranked one-on-one matches or unranked games that hold up to six players, who rotate through as matches finish while the non-active players spectate. The online seems to be of the same quality as Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix's, which is to say that it's great and seems to work perfectly more often than not. Of course, this is the Internet we're talking about here, so don't be surprised to see some less-than-ideal matches here and there.

The graphics in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 haven't been updated, but there are a few sprite-filtering options to choose from. Additionally, the game defaults to a zoomed-in perspective that fills 16:9 screens. The original game ran in 4:3, and if you like, you can force it to that aspect ratio. Considering the verticality of MvC2, I think I prefer the original screen size, but that's more a matter of preference. It's a nice option to have, either way. It's also worth noting that the music in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is awful. Actually, I appreciate its awfulness in some cases, like the character select screen's short loop that repeats that it's going to "take you for a ride." But most of the tracks are pseudo-jazzy tunes that really don't fit with the action very well at all.

So if you're a fan of the game, you've probably already purchased it. But if you haven't gotten into a previous version of MvC2, it's going to be a steep climb, especially if you hope to compete online. As someone who understands the basics of the game but doesn't always apply them in the most intelligent way, I was getting absolutely stomped in most of the ranked games I played. Don't expect to be able to take any skills you've picked up in other recent fighting games, like Street Fighter IV or BlazBlue, and apply them here to any great effect. Yes, you're still making fireball and dragon punch motions for specials, but the mentality is certainly different. You may want to check out the demo first.

@vhold: Yeah except that game had good music, where as this is just thrown together. And SF3 had plenty of electronic stuff.

The demo that is local multiplayer only. Am I the only one who finds that remarkably annoying?

I am going to pass on this one; BlazBlue, Guilty Gear and MvC are too crazy for me, along with many many other fighting games.

I don't understand, why does this game get 4/5 when it has 'crazy over the top moves', but BlazBlue gets a 3/5 Because it is crazy and over the top?.  Especially when the balance in MvC2 is so totally awful (Try playing high-end without Storm and Cyclops.  Oh wait, you can't).

I love Jeff's reviews normally, but I think he messed up with the fighters lately.  I understand our opinions aren't always going to coincide, so I was willing to let his BlazBlue review slide at first.  But when he rates one game up for something he rated another game down for, I'm calling BS.  Especially when one is new and innovative and brings the netcode that all fighters should use as a basis.  The other is tried and true, but nothing original either.

Good review but I think the craziness is a major part of its appeal, not a turn off.  If you see people playing this game it looks fun.  I may not appeal to the super serious fighting fan, but to normal people the game looks like alot of fun.

The mechanics are easy as dirt to learn compared to other fighting games, especially SF4.  Every character has pretty much the same combo inputs and you don't have to have godlike timing to pull them off.  That makes it pretty easy to figure out and have fun with.  You won't be godlike at the game, but you can play around with it and have alot of fun.  Even when you lose the game is showing you something so ridiculous, like a guy with exploding clothes or red riding hood packing an uzi or a walking cactus that's doing a 50 hit combo, that it stays fun.

I guess it's time to call it quits before I get this game. Don't want to have my ass handed to me everytime I try the game AND pay $15. They should discount it to $5 for us nOObs.

@LightGaia: Yea, this game was definitely not balanced.  I sort of feel like they were purposefully making a sort of retarded game, kinda as if they were making a parody of themselves, but that doesn't mean it's not fun.

Street Fighter 3 also had the weird totally inappropriate jazzy lounge music.  I wonder what Capcom's musicians were smoking at the time.  It's almost like they were going out of their way to make the most ill fitting music possible, which works in a charming screwed up way.

The combo system is really forgiving with links, assists are easy and the screen never gets so crazy where you don't have any idea whats going on. The review is fine, but it seems every time there's something out of the norm Jeff docks points off it cuz its " sooooooo crazy and impossible to get into ", that can be said for any game...just sit down with it for an hr and you'll be fine dear god...I love you Jeff but common man....Also, my friend who has never played a Street Fighter game before picked this up today and is having fun and isn't overwhelmed at all...hes fine."

I disagree. Even as someone who has a fair amount of experience with the game, sometimes there really is just so much shit going on that unless you have cognitive superpowers, you have to take a stp ep back for a couple of seconds and work out who's who and what's going on. Especially when two people are playing a similar (or even the same) team, or when characters like Dr Doom, Silver Samurai or Storm are sending projectiles literally everywhere, or when assists are flying in from all directions.

It's pretty hairy and for new players it's a legitimate point to throw out there. Besides, it's not like they start from 5 and 'dock' points, that's just ridiculous. 4 is a decent score given how old the game is, how crazy it is, and how unfriendly it is for new players and people who don't want to pick from any of the 10 or so higher tier characters.

From just playing the trial version, I'd say that it's only worth buying if a) you've got an arcade stick; and b) you like to play online. Sadly, I don't have an arcade stick for my 360, so unless it comes out on the PC anytime soon, I won't be purchasing. Also, it's a shame that the demo is such a poor preview of the game, only offering local multiplayer; would a limited singleplayer mode be so hard to implement for those without a second controller?

That said, it's a good review, Jeff. It certainly mirrors some of my thoughts from my very limited play of the game. Only curly-mustaches need apply here.

My gripe with this game is the lack of balance. Some characters in this game like Juggernaut and Sentinial are ban-worthy. I prefer the first game because the roster is more balanced. It also had better modes, frenzy ability, and better music.

You can set the 4:3 aspect ratio in the menu, I have it set to that ad it's working pretty well.

Overall i'd agree, it's certainly not for people who don't already know they will like it. And it's totally off the wall fucking crizazy.

This game is fun as hell...against people you know.  I've personally gotten laid the fuck out by infinite combos online that are mind you, fairly easy to do if you want to spend an hour memorizing a single button combination.  However, all matches I've played against my friends online has been fantastic fun

Gotta say, I loved this game when it was just me and my buds screwing around, but when I saw this in arcades where almost everyone chose some combo of Storm, Magneto and Cable, I was saddened because I knew I could never play like that.

Sounds like I'm not missing much owning the DC original. I agree with your thoughts on the 4;3 aspect ratio being more suited to this game.  I kinda like that lame music also.

Thanks.

I just remember the reviewer from this site for BlazBlue saying that it was too much flash. This game looks like that times five. I don't want to go overboard with any exaggerations, and I feel like this got the review it got because of the characters. There is just way too much going on on the screen. I said it before: I don't have ADD so this game ain't for me.

@Jeffsekai: As a person who never played SF and got overwhelmed by SFIV and obtained no motivation to learn it, I listen to Jeff when he says that a game isn't friendly to newcomers, just like he did in his review of SFIV.

@TriangleHard: And somehow still being professional in giving a proper criticism of the one game they had coming out (Bionic Commando)

I actually was thinking about their relationship with Capcom and I don't see a problem there given the evidence.

Unfortunately I have to give this game a pass, but since it's just a relaunching of the same game from back in the days, I think I can live without it like I've always have.  It seems like a lot of fighting games are being released of all kinds and I'm okay with waiting to see what's next.

Considering other press already have reviews up for the PS3 version, that means Capcom has already sent out review copies/codes for the PS3 version as well which means the only reason why this review is only for XBLM is probably because the PSN version hasn't been released yet.

It's not perfect, especially when you're in the character select screen while playing online. It's choppy and you can lose track which character you are picking. The online play is spot on, but you will need an arcade stick, because the xbox d-pad is awful.
