Minecraft Review

The Xbox version of Minecraft is both better and worse than the PC original, though it's most valuable for newcomers to the whole phenomenon.

Enough hours and elbow grease will turn this...
Enough hours and elbow grease will turn this...

It's hard to imagine you've kept up with video games this long without becoming at least passingly familiar with the Minecraft phenomenon. But if you're like me, so far you've managed to avoid actually diving pickaxe-first into that blocky landscape and wasting dozens of hours building... whatever it is a person builds when they have access to a wide range of tools and no specific directives as to their use. For you and me, the new Xbox 360 Edition of Minecraft is a fine introduction to the world of tunneling to the center of the Earth in a desperate search for precious minerals, and constructing castles that take you weeks to build. Veterans of the far more robust PC version, however, more than likely won't find anything worthwhile in this scaled-down port.

If you don't actually know anything about what Minecraft is at this point, there are untold thousands of hours of YouTube videos out there to educate you. Let it suffice that it's a retro-lookin' open-ended sandbox where you harvest raw materials like dirt, wood, and stone, refine them into slightly less raw materials like glass, and then... well, you figure it out. As this was my first experience in any sort of Minecraft world whatsoever, I was terrified by the game's lack of direction for a couple of hours, until I finally decided that I was going to build myself a gigantic castle, which ended up presenting a series of small architectural and process-oriented challenges that I found pretty satisfying. This version does include a nicely paced (if poorly written) tutorial that smoothly introduces you to the steps required to make basic tools, build structures, and so on. It's also a rare case where the included Xbox achievements actually provide you some specific structure and guidance above and beyond the goals the game itself gives you, which are few.

...into something more like this.
...into something more like this.

That said, this "Xbox 360 Edition" is a strange beast that comes with what seems like an equal number of pros and cons when compared to the PC original. In the negative column: individual worlds are quite limited in size, considering the PC version will generate endless terrain for as long as you want to explore it. There's also no option for a persistent world that anyone can join at will; instead, the host has to be running their game and have it set to "online" for anyone else to join it, and all other players are dropped when the host quits. Naturally, you won't have access to any of the legion of mods that have been produced for the game. And most damningly, the 360 game is based on a year-old PC version that lacks a huge list of features like a hunger meter, new biomes, and randomly generated towns. The developers of this version hope to expedite Microsoft's typically onerous update process and bring it closer to parity with the PC game on a bimonthly basis, but whether or not that will happen--and whether they'll charge extra if it does--remains to be seen. The short version of all this is that if you've already spent a ton of time with the "real" Minecraft, or you want to delve straight into the most mature and feature-rich version of the game on the market, this isn't the one you want.

The 360 game isn't without its own improvements, though. Chiefly, the crafting interface is fast and largely automated, presenting you with an easy-to-browse list of recipes and allowing you to pop out axes and shovels, stairs, workbenches, and so on at the touch of a button, rather than forcing you to memorize ingredient lists and manually drag those ingredients into slots to make stuff. And while the persistence of your worlds is limited, the game offers an elegant way to view and join all of your friends' games while they're in progress. Most importantly, the game offers local splitscreen co-op that makes it an ideal casual experience for multiple people hanging around the house on a lazy Saturday afternoon. For me, the local co-op rapidly went from a mere bullet-point feature to the most valuable aspect of this whole game in the space of one of those afternoons. The game works really well on the 360 controller in general, and if you use the lowest difficulty, which disables monsters (like the infernal creepers who are constantly blowing up all your carefully constructed stuff), the game can be an awfully pleasant, lean-back sort of way to pass a few hours. Or more than a few.

The worlds are limited in size, but still plenty big to build some dumb stuff in.
The worlds are limited in size, but still plenty big to build some dumb stuff in.

In the multitude of hours I've put into this version of Minecraft so far, I had no trouble editing multiple worlds across multiple Xboxes, and playing any combination of local and online co-op with various friends. Though, there was one maddening experience where the game crashed when I used the save-and-quit option, failing to save in the process and obliterating all my work since the last save. Based on anecdotal evidence, I'm hardly the only one who's had that specific problem, so you're advised to use the regular manual save option frequently to make sure you don't lose any hard work until the game is patched.

In the future, this version of the game will live and die by the frequency and robustness of those promised updates and the extent to which they catch the game up to the progress of the PC original. The 360 Edition is a bit steep by Xbox standards at $20, though the PC version now costs a bit more (and some outlets seem to be selling this one for less, anyway). If you're reading this review at all, you probably own at least one platform, ranging from PC to Mac to the iPhone or Android, that Minecraft already runs on, but here and now, the 360 game offers enough value for block-building neophytes to justify its existence in a world where Minecraft has already seemingly been wallpapered everywhere you look for the last couple of years.

@Atwa: My guess would be so people can see if, or more likely according to us both HOW inferior it is. Seems like it's well worth a purchase if you're more comfortable with the 360 and have never played for some reason. With a game like Minecraft, yeah, I'd suspect it to be impossible to create a game of equal or improved quality off of its home platform. It's just how it is.

It doesn't...level of control you get on mouse seems much quicker in navigating inventory and overall moving around the world and placing/digging blocks.

You can move in the inventory a bit quicker and you get a bit more precision when placing blocks, big deal. It plays the exact same.

I really don't know what the point of releasing this on the 360 is, when pretty much any computer available can more than handle Minecraft. Not to mention the lack of content compared to the PC/Mac version.

My older laptop wasn't able to handle it at all. Minecraft can get pretty memory hoggy and also some people just don't like playing with a mouse. I played the heck out of Minecraft for PC but I tried the demo just to see how it works and just like they said in the Quick Look it's completely functional and some things even work a little better like recipes.

That doesn't make much sense b/c if it's quicker and more precise than the Xbox 360 version I would not call that "the exact same". I'm not saying it's horrible but I was going to purchase it until I played the trial and realized how much tougher it was to do stuff than in the PC version. Having it not be up to date factored in a little as well.

My roommate is going to buy this even though he has the PC version since this one is easier for multiplayer (i.e. you don't need to run a dedicated server for it). I might check it out but I really hope they bring a lot of the PC updates to it for free.

I find it weird that this didn't launch with Kinect support. Because when they announced the 360 version there were two bullet points 1. Its coming to Xbox 360 2. Kinect. Considering people have done some interesting stuff modding the PC version to import 3D models (animated 3d models in some cases) with the help of Kinect it seems really odd they didn't have anything to go for this launch.

That said I find myself strangely drawn to this version and mulling a purchase despite recently playing the PC version again to check out the new stuff I never played with. I guess its a sickness. At least I should wait to see how the updates pan out and how and when the Kinect stuff gets implemented.

I read the review and don't see any pros to buying this version? Oh well. I guess it's a good thing this game FINALLY got some proper coverage on this site after being a thing for 2 years.

It depends on who you are. If you are a parent with two young kids you would like to play with, then the splitscreen alone on this makes it worth the $20.

I see a few people writing "any PC can run it" originally i bought the PC version for my son so he could play with friends, he has a laptop which is maybe 2 years old at this point , maybe 1 at the time and it cant run it smoothly. so for him the easiest thing to do would be to get the xbox version since its a much better experience.

That must be you then ... the last PC I saw that was not able to run minecraft smoothly was 10 years old, a 2 year old laptop should not have a problem running the game. Maybe the laptop needs a proper reset/reinstall?

When was the last time that you tested it on old/low end hardware? It's changed a lot in the last year or so. It used to run pretty well on just about anything, but since Beta 1.8 or so that hasn't been the case.

Yeah. Considering Java isnt exactly a great language to be doing all this shit with, minecraft has gotten a fair bit more computer intensive with the major patches. With actual lighting/shading effects, lots more for the game to consider as it starts generating more blocks, like the inclusion of villages, different biomes, etc. I actually think it would be smart for there to be a feature to tell the game to stop generating world at some point. Its crazy that my desktop that can run skyrim pretty smoothly(although with some hitches) if i restart it and make sure theres nothing else running, but it chugs when i boot up minecraft, especially if i try to play music in the background.

I'm still kinda baffled that after all this time they decided to look at Minecraft but only because it was out on the Xbox , even after the game "oficially" came out they didn't care to even do a QL and all they could say about it was "lol not a game" but now is a game worth a review because is on the xbox that's something right?

I know that it's a rip-off of Minecraft, but Castle Miner Z (if you've never seen it, Youtube it) is a fifth of the price. I don't understand why it's worth paying over $10 more for something that looks worse and has very basic combat options.

I just downloaded it and spent the afternoon playing it. I had not played a single moment of Minecraft on the PC, for whatever reason, and so this was my first experience with it. Thus far, there is not a whole lot in it that you can call "game", but it is a ton of fun and supremely relaxing.

Hunger meter's actually pretty darn clever. As long as you're fed, and you stay fed a long time, you have regenerating health. So you don't have to eat as much food as you normaly would.

I give you guys that Java isn't exactly the best language for something like minecraft and, with all due respect, notch isn't exactly a god among programmers (I saw the sourcecode). The 10-year-old PC thing was on version 1.6 I think. After that I gave my nephew my old (Desktop-)PC (is about 6-7 years old now) and that one runs every version of minecraft perfectly fine.

In the end it doesnt really matter, if people enjoy the xbox-version of minecraft thats a good thing. Since I doubt that one is done in Java maybe the PC guys will even get a decent version out of it in the long run.

If anything the first screen, what with the diamond sword and the railway track, suggests more work than the house which, though pretty, is built from pretty bog standard resources.

All this 360 coverage has prompted me to dive back into the PC version, and I have to say the new additions since I last played, especially the new biomes, have been a treat to discover. Still, this seems like a pretty compelling version for anyone who didn't get in cheap in the alpha/beta days. I'm not convinced I'd pay for the PC version up front now.

Brad, I know you balked at the price tag on the PC version, so I have an offer for you. Back in MC Alpha, I bought four copies of the game for me and my friends to play together. Three of us loved it, but one of us absolutely hated it after ten minutes of playing it and never wanted to even look at it again.

I can probably get his copy of the game for you, since he basically never played it. Want it? It's just wasting away as it is, and it would also allow you a better perspective on the pros and cons.

Shoot me a PM if you'd like it. I know you guys don't need free games, but this was a wasted, unused purchase that could be put to good use by ya. :)

Also, this is only an offer to Brad/anyone else at GB.

Fortresscraft, a shameless Minecraft clone for XBLIG (one among dozens) has sold around 750,000 copies so far.

This is why Minecraft was ported to XBLA proper.

You are more or less accurate. My wife runs minecraft on a single core 1.8GHz CPU and an Nvidia 6150 SE (integrated chip). With 2GB of RAM.

Terrible, terrible machine, and it's playable with optifine.

Edit, that was on version 1.2.5 (like a month ago).

I have been playing Minecraft since it's early stages in Alpha (I don't remember what version number). So the problem I've encountered over the course of two years is the computer I've been running it on doesn't run the game well. I don't have the money right now to replace this laptop (also being a musician and audio engineer this laptop runs some key software for what I do for a living). So this version of Minecraft was perfect to get my fix with out a bad frame rate. Also the multiplayer is a big plus because my girlfriends brother just bought it and the night it came out we were all in his living room playing and just having a great time.

For those who don't want to go through the process of running and maintaining a dedicated server, and just want to play with a group of friends - Xbox 360 does make it mindlessly simple. It's rather unfortunate that the 360 version doesn't have the extras added in the past year - such as the endermen, underground mines (strongholds), and the encounter with the ender dragon, and the "end" of the game.

If they provide updates, the 360 version could become a "light" version, for people who aren't ultra nerdy like me, and don't need to tinker with mods and texture packs. If they don't, I have a feeling this game will just another part of the mountain of XBLA games nobody plays more than two months after release.

I'm sure that some people have already seen this video, but it's still the most intriguing example for Minecraft I've seen yet. Running around mining shit and killing things that blow up loses it's luster when you see someone build an actual CPU in the game that can perform the Fibonacci sequence. Then at the end when you see the sheer SCALE of the damn thing stretching out into the horizon beyond the view distance.

As for the XBox version I wouldn't pay for an out of date version with a limited community and no mod support. If people think that couch co-op is worth it then fine, otherwise it's inferior in every other conceivable way. Get it on PC, and if you don't have a PC that can run it I'd recommend getting out of the stone age. The damn thing is basic Javascript with uniform cubes. It isn't exactly a resource hog.

That was amazing!! Blown away.

After watching the TNT, I don't see how this version is getting so much praise. It's as busted as the PC alpha version.

"The Xbox version of Minecraft is both better and worse than the PC original, though it's most valuable for newcomers to the whole phenomenon."

its better as in......

controller instead of mouse and keyboards

less content

smaller multiplayer servers

no updates

sounds better if youre a 360 fanboy

Great game and a great review, I remember buying minecraft long ago at the very start of the alpha and all my friends said I was being stupid buying a indie game that no one knew about! How wrong they were a couple of months later! :D

For me it seems like in the xbox 360 version ( wich i play) it's kinda hard to find diamonds when your in a minshaft it took me about half a day to find at least 5 but stilll xbox 360 version rocks. For anyone who doesn't have the full version i recommend getting it, it's AWESOME, by the way does anyone else playing the full version of Minecraft on the xbox 360 version seem to lack diamonds for you?
